Kim Gordon And Thurston Moore Broke Up
When I first read that Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore were quitting each other romantically, my first response was to declare for myself that forever true love is a falsity (file that under: words I learned while watching Judge Judy) and we should all spend what's ever left of our lives fucking strangers, eating pie, fucking strangers and banging our heads against the cave wall until the grim reaper chihuahua shows up to lead us to the river that takes us to the afterworld. But you know, Kim and Thursty were married for 27 years. That's two decades and a second grader! That's two and a half Biebers! Many people could not wake up next to the same face for 27 years. Hell, some people can't even wake up with their own faces on, which is why they get totally different faces glued onto their front heads. (I'm not naming any names. Kim Kardashian.)
Kim and Thursty simply want a different flavor of genitals on their tongue. That's all. They passed this break-up statement to E! News and everybody else last night:
"Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment."
So, that shit also makes it sound like they might be fucking done professionally too. Oh well, 30 years is a long ass time for a band to be together and that is a great accomplishment. Yes, that is my new line for everything. Me to the mirror this afternoon after I eat a Big Mac and 6-piece McNugget: "Oh, Michael don't be so hard on yourself. For the past 6 days, you didn't give in to the wishes of the devil by eating McDonald's. That is a great accomplishment for you. You had a good run.....and now you have the runs."

I'm already there, but not because of this: "my first response was to declare for myself that forever true love is a falsity (file that under: words I learned while watching Judge Judy) and we should all spend what's ever left of our lives fucking strangers, eating pie, fucking strangers and banging our heads against the cave wall until the grim reaper chihuahua shows up to lead us to the river that takes us to the afterworld."

That's sad. They must have been having troubles, and Courtney Love saying Kim was hot after Kurt probably didn't help...
^^^^^^^^^
Huh? Why would her husband care now? Kurt's been dead for years, who gives a fuck? Also, Courtney is a brain dead zombie who thinks EVERYONE was hot after Kurt Cobain. yeah, like I'm gonna want a guy who doesn't shave, doesn't brush his hair or his teeth, shoots up heroin for a "stomach problem", and was a whiny bitch? Fuck yeah, he's a real catch.
Goddamn I hated grunge and all the bullshit it stood for.

I'll be in the minority here but...Sonic Youth used to annoy me a bit. They're great as musicians but I thought Kim and Thurston had some weird vampire thing where they felt that if they dressed liked teenagers, and hung out with the under-25 crowd, then no one would notice they were already middle aged.
^^^^^^^^^^
Amen, Zorba. I always thought they were like the creepy parents in the room trying to crash their kids' party and act cool. And that generation of musicians didn't help, holding them up like they were the end all be all of musicians. WTF? No one had ever heard of grunge before 1990 and here the fuck these posers all came, and they're acting like Sonic Youth "inspired" them. Then how fucking long were they around? It was a bandwagon thing and I lived in the northwest then, so I was over grunge and all that shit in a hot minute, but I had to listen to that shit constantly. Made me turn off the radio for about a decade and a half bc I was so sick of it. So, they're divorcing. BFD. Good riddance. Maybe with some luck they WON'T both make solo albums now. Gag.

That's too bad. They should be proud of making it that long, though. I love music, but never got into SY. They were always one of those bands that you were supposed to like, for some reason, but I was always blah about their stuff. Like Pavement, another 90's darling, same deal.
----------------------
Whoa, will you marry me? SY had some great moments, but so much of their output was terrible. And not even terrible in a grand way, but just mediocre wanking. Pavement are awful too. Stephen Malkmus's fey, nasal voice makes me furious. Plus they're basically just a poppy imitation of the Fall.
But I will give SY credit for being pretty nice people who were always supportive of unknown bands. Though Kim is a dick for trying to be a fashion designer.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Omg. There is no hope for any of us now.
Didn't know they were married and didn't know the band was still around! Jeepers! I DO remember 1984 though as being one of the best years in music ever!!

My husband said the new disc is good. And that he always had the hots for Kim. NOW he tells me, now that she's up for grabs. Dude is messing with my head.
Especially in the 90s, they really clung to that whole generation X thing, though some could say they were more like Baby Boomers. They were charming and effortlessly cool, yes, but there was some arrested development there too. So for them to break up when they realized they were officially old...well, it doesn't seem to far-fetched.
That's sad. They must have been having troubles, and Courtney Love saying Kim was hot after Kurt probably didn't help...
I have mad respect for the fact they can still work together- it proves it's a mature, amicable split.
Noooooooooo!
Look up the definition of "cool." There is no description, just a picture of Kim Gordon.

Oh, how sad. I adore Sonic Youth. Always have. I hope the best for each of them, they were a really great band. I am sure they were together more than 27 years though - they only married in 1984. So, they had a very long run. Such wonderful memories from my youth. I always thought it was so touching how much Kim admired Kim Carpenter.
So, in tribute to that, Sonic Youth's "Tunic (Song for Karen)"

I'm kind of meh about Sonic Youth but they do have some great songs. "Shadow of a Doubt" is my fave. "Teenage Riot," "Washing Machine" and "Star Power" are pretty good, too.

Love, love, love SY and both Kim and Thurston are awesome people outside of music (we used to live in the same small town).
Major side-eye to all the "never heard of them" commenters, except PSL who gets a free pass.

Aww, that is fucking sad. Kim is the shit...gotta love some "Panty Lines"....

"That's an awfully high horse sir, may I pet him?"
My 1st band did two Sonic Youth covers, they were a HUGE influence on me. Sads.
They are an *amazing* band, and seemed like nice people. And genuinely talented people unlike all the famewhores we see today. 27 years was a great accomplishment, especially considering how crazy their lives must have been at several points.
And it's Kin gordon and Thurston Moore! They are not "too old to have options" I'm sure they'll have plenty of options...most of them in their 20's!
I am...doll parts...bad skin...doll heart.
@fredfred: SASSY! God how I loved that rag! Such an integral part of my youth.
I remember when Thurston guest-wrote the "Dear Boy" column; he dispensed such thoughtful and sweet advice to the readers who wrote in for help.
I'm gonna go read some of my old issues now!
Sonic Youth was too cool to ever raise their
collective heads above ground. I always respected them as a band even though their music didn't grab me. Besides Kim Deal + Sassy= Love Forever Style. I miss the 90's thiiiiiis much :::: widening arms::::, but I don't miss the movies too much and I will throw Reality Bites the side eye...because it knows who I am talking about.
" The thing about love is you're always at its mercy"
I'm actually horrified by this news! I grew up in the 80s and 90s, when they were constant college radio and 120 Minutes staples. Now I'm afraid true love doesn't exist :(

Sonic Youth are/were shit.
I was a child in the 90s, so I never gave a fuck about these assholes or any other asshole bands from that decade. Still don't, clearly, since I will not care less about anything this year as I do about this news.
I don't see the point divorcing when you've been together ten million years and you're a fucking old ass and you no longer have options.
i cannot believe they are splitting!
who gets all their back issues of sassy?

I'm surprised at how many people never heard of Sonic Youth. In the 90's you couldn't read Rolling Stone or Spin and escape them.
******************************
I've never heard of them. But I turned 21 in 1990. So I was still in college, and working, and getting married (at 21) and then having kids. Too busy during the 90s to pick up a Rolling Stone or Spin.

Fucking strangers is a crap shoot, some people do not know what they're doing, and I can have an orgasm with someone I care about at home - me - and relationships are really hard to maintain, so I think we're generally screwed either way.
Who and Who? I have no idea who these people are, or Sonic Youth for that matter. But if you have been married for 27 YEARS, why break up?

aww, my spin subscribing, flannel & doc marten wearing inner 19 year old has got the sads.
they had a good, prolific run.
I feel nothing! Actually, I am having a craving for a Big Mac, thanks to MK and it must be ten years since I fell into the grease arches.

This may show my age, but I'm absolutely stunned over these two breaking up.
BTW, "two and a half Biebers" is the funniest shit ever.
@putsomestankonit Right? Arcade Fire are today's Sonic Youth.
Damn. Who lived through the 90s without hearing about Sonic Youth? I've always loved their cover of The Carpenter's "Superstar". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs9eh82buls&feature=related
I'm starting to believe that I spent the 90's in a coma. First the whole Nirvana thing went by me, and now Sonic Youth.

Don't they have a couple of kids?
Aww. I'm dating myself here, but I grew up with many friends who were into Sonic Youth, even if I didn't listen to them much myself - they were always around. Kim and Thurston are genuinely nice and sweet people - they pre-dated Kurt and Courtney as the big "alt-rock couple" by years - except considerably less fucked-up. My 13 year-old self is a little sad.
I remembered when they toured in '99 and their entire tour bus was stolen and never found!!
Crazy.

I could never get into Sonic Youth, myself...their music just sounds like noise to me.

Come on. You guys have never heard of Sonic Youth? I saw them at the now defunct fire trap the Living Room in Providence. Kim is about 5 feet tall, 90 lbs soaking wet and was covered in body glitter. Anyway if you're not familiar with them, "Kool Thing" (album is "Goo") is probably one of their more accessible tunes. You'd probably also like "Dirty", you've likely heard some songs of that and not realized who the band is. I always liked "Daydream Nation" the cover art is pretty incredible - painting of a candle that looks like a photograph.......
You should post the BULL IN THE HEATHER video!!!
Never gave a shit about Sonic Youth, but that chick can't sing to save her life and looks like a dude on drag... and that's all I have to say about that.
Honest question, how old is the woman because on that video someone posted, she looks so fucking old. Does she have the Ali Lohan Syndrome?.
