...that is not a flattering image .. esp of her next to that 'life-sized' cake... now I want to listen to 'Think'... listened to it just this weekend...

RIRi. Happy birthday Queen. Go ahead and have some ice cream.

I'm cooking for company next Friday.
I always cook as much as I can ahead of time.
I'm the ultimate hostess.

I would love to have you over for dinner!

Heck, I'd even invite boston61 and AttFinch and we would all have a great time.
Great food, booze, music and no politics.
No problems with loud music blasting away either!

All of my neighbors and hubbie's Texas relatives love my international cooking.

Ugly as all fuck but who isn't by the time they reach 70?

You go, URETHRA! Eat that mutha fuckin' cake! Might be the last cake ya eat. Live like tomorrow may never come! Fuck the fat haters.

Happy Birthday Paul Manfred Glasser! He is a class act and very well-educated. I wish we could see more of him.

Luvs2tango - you and I are on the same wavelength today! Your menu is superior, though, I admit! Next Aretha's birthday, I'm coming to your house, okay? :)

We worked hard for our money! So hard for it, honey!

Luvs2tango's picture

Yup, been cooking (Chicken Biryani, Lamb Samosas and Baklava) all afternoon and playing Aretha.
Hubbie is outside smoking a brisket.

Had 'Ain't No Way' on about an hour ago!!!!!
This is one of my favorites.

We have a humble home, overlooking Ft.Worth, but have top of the line electronics. Hubbie is in IT and can wire anything.

I wanted a sound system as good as a gay disco since I have always been into music and dance.

We have wonderful speakers on the ceiling all over.
The house rocks with wonderful music and today has been an Aretha concert day.

Oh Happy Day.
When Aretha sings gospel, I believe in Jesus.

TelevisedRevolution's picture

I've been cooking and listening to Aretha all afternoon - this one features none other than than Whitney Houston's mother Cissy in the background, singing that high, swooping part:

"Ain't No Way"

(also written by Aretha's sister Carolyn, I believe)

Hey for all the cake talk, realize this: Aretha #1, numero uno!

And that is among some very stiff competition. Eat all the cake you want baby! <333

"Don't Play That Song for Me"

http://youtu.be/KSoXJl2ALUk

I've always loved this song!
Thank you for the clip.
So damn special...so many songs to have as my favorite of favorites.

Aretha's "Amazing Grace" gospel album was and is spectacular.

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" is life changing...especially great when "chilling down" from rolling on 'e' all night.

I know *I* am not waiting until I am 80 to say/do what the fuck I want to. I do that NOW. 80 is not promised to me. So fuck THAT!

And it always trips me the fuck OUT that people don't know shit about Aretha Franklin, but they can sing every Britney track.

Happiest of birthdays to the Queens Aretha and Elton!! Your majesties. *bows deeply and shoves Anita's face into her cake when she goes to blow out the candles*

And Gloria Steinam, what can I say. Women owe you so much. What a phenomenal bunch of people born today.

SJP makes a fool of herself running around town trying to be Fe Fendi or Muffie Potter Aston or (now that she's getting older!) Brooke Astor. She buys her way on to every board in town, but without having any real interest in the organizations' governance. Where does this social climbing insecurity come from? Does the fact she has a horse face have anything to do with it? She can't pull off the high society pose, so she needs to stop before she's laughed out of Manhattan.

pathetic.

Aretha is a great talent. But I'd appreciate it if she wore sleeves to cover those bat wings.

Just hop on a plane to my neck of the woods then. Even though smoking is legally banned in bars, most owners of small bars have a 'fuck you' attitude towards the law. The Dutch have a taste for public disobedience.

In 1967, I landed in Wall Street as a secretary the week after I graduated from high school in Staten Island, NY. I was 17.

The mailman within company befriended me and he took me to Harlem to see Aretha Franklin in concert. WOWZA! I lied to my mother and told her I was seeing, Sergio Franchi at The Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center.

Aretha's body of work is tremendous. Genius.
Saw her again a couple of years later.
Then one more time a decade later.

I always wanted to be Aretha and Gladys Knight.

I was very lucky to see the music of Motown up close and personal in it's heyday.

Well every five-ten years or so, we need a legendarily bad mainstream movie that becomes notorious for how bad it is. I think the last one was "Catwoman" or "Gigli."

So we're about due.

Yup. I'd add Dragonfly and Because I Said So--both execrable, and not in a good way. Oh, and anything with Ashton Kutcher.

Most people don't realize that's you playing piano and singing on your hit songs, Miss Aretha. They don't know what a fine musician you are, since nowadays CEOs pay their minions to squeeze music out of a tube marked "pink slime," just like all the other products they sell.

But you come from a different time, when musicians still had to play, and engineers had to understand sound, and composers could write, and singers could SANG, and soul was a real thing.

I've known your music since I was in the womb, and I'm so glad to wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and I hope you have many many many more!

Crappy birthday to Anita Bryant.

To illustrate what a crazy kind of fundie school I went to: in fourth grade we had to do an oral report and dress as a famous person we admired. I chose Louisa May Alcott. My BFF chose Anita Bryant. Bunch a wackos.
