Obligatory Title: Jay-Z's Got 99 Problems, But Gay Marriage Ain't One

Personally, the only rapper I want to hear from when it comes to the topic of gay marriage is Chris "Daddy Mac" Smith from Kris Kross, but in the meantime I guess we'll listen to what Jay-Z has to say about this. During a talk with CNN's Poppy Harlow (Side Note: I wish my name was Poppy Harlow.) about stuff, Jay-Z was asked if he's Yay-Z or Nay-Z for marriage being legal for everyone. Jay-Z co-signed what Obama had to say:

“I’ve always thought it as something that was still holding the country back. What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It's no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple."

Jay-Z also said that it really doesn't matter if Obama's support costs him some votes, because it was the right thing to do as a human being.

Because I am pretty much a professional nitpicker, my irises took a few steps to the side at the word "choose" and moved all the way to the side at the word "in their own homes." This is rich coming from a multi-millionaire who owns 45 mansions across the world including an estate covered with iridescent dolphin tears on an island in Antarctica that you can only get to by hovercraft yacht. Excuse you, Jay-Z, but some people live with their parents, siblings and/or roommates and can't do their business in their own homes. Some have to do it in the dark part of an empty subway train, the last stall in the men's room of a bar, the last row in a movie theater playing LOL, between parked cars, a random apartment building room, etc... etc... So what I'm getting from this is that Jay-Z is pro gay marriage, but anti-public fucking..... and anti-homelessness. I see how it is.

And I can't wait for Newsweek to declare Jay-Z as "Gay-Z" on their cover.

Most of you have already said things best about the convenience of Obama's statement(s), so I'll say "here, here" and just add one more thing.

If he was really an advocate for gay marriage he would be willing to bring the issue before the supreme court and make it a federal issue. As it stands it's a state issue, so him saying "I PERSONALLY believe in gay marriage" is simply that . . . his personal opinion which won't alter anything (except it will alter sales of newsweek).

There's nothing heroic or life changing for people pro/anti gay marriage in his statement.

As for Gay-Z well, meh.

Then he was against gay marriage when it was politically convenient.

Good for him. What people fail to realize is that so many people in the anti-gay black community look up to him and maybe he can open their eyes. Maybe not. The fact that there are women and black people in this country who are so vehemently against equal rights for gay people is straight laughable. I guess be glad that eventually someone realized that putting your rights up for vote was unfair. There is no difference here.

I see your point, though I don't think Obama will lose votes because of this (though indeed it might fire up the Republican base, like you said). Obama supporters tend to be pro-marriage equality anyway. I think that the tide is turning on this issue- people are increasingly pro-marriage equality, particularly younger people. Of course, the youth vote is really elusive, but Obama may be able to fire up his own base, which is pretty disillusioned with him right now.

I think this may end up back firing for Obama. Republicans seem to already be wary of Mitt (I still can't with that name) Romney even though he's the Republican nominee, but being pro gay marriage may firmly loose him a lot of voted, especially from anti gay marriage blacks, and states rights supporters. For fear that he'll make gay marriage a national right (overriding sate bans) they won't vote for him.

But let me say I never liked Jay Z. His rap was always lame to me. Only because Notorious BIG and Tupac managed to get themselves killed and Ice T and Ice Cube got out of the rap game (smart moves from both men), does everyone think Jay Z is the god of hip hop.

Have to agree. When my mom and her sis moved here from England, her sis ( my aunt) wound up living down south with the guy she married.
My mom went to vist, before I was born, and actually saw the "White only" restsrooms. It shocked the shit out of her.
