Rodney King Has Passed Away

Rodney King was found dead in the backyard of his home in Rialto, CA early this morning. For those of you young hos who are like, "Who's Rodney King?" Please tell your 7th grade history teacher to give a long lesson on the 1991 brutal police beating of Rodney King, which lead to an acquittal, which led to the massive L.A. Race Riots.

There's not a lot of confirmed details, but TMZ is on this hard and has heard a few things. Rodney's fiancee, Cynthia Kelley, is telling friends that he spent the entire day yesterday boozing and smoking weed at the house.  When she called it a night and went to bed at 2 this morning, Rodney was still drinking and was in a good mood. Then at around 5 this morning, Cynthia was awoken by Rodney's screams. She found Rodney naked and banging on the glass. Cynthia asked him what was wrong before she ran to grab her phone, to call 911 presumably. Cynthia then heard a splash and she ran to the backyard. Cynthia found Rodney lying at the bottom of the pool. The paramedics showed up and were unable to bring Rodney back. Rodney was only 47 years old.

After the riots and a federal trial in 1993, which ended with two of the officers found guilty, Rodney King was in a bad way. Rodney battled addiction and was arrested a couple of times. In 2009, Rodney was on both Celebrity Rehab and Sober House, and to me came across as a nice, quiet, sad, troubled (I hate that word too, but I couldn't think of another one) guy who really wanted to get his shit together.

Oh, and if you haven't been to Facebook today, you might want to stay away unless you really want to see a dozen statutes that say: "Can't all just..." you know the rest.

Rest in peace, Rodney King.

I was rooting for Rodney King in Celebrity Rehab. He seemed like a very sweet man. Too sensitive for his own good. His coping and survival skills were never really there. I always figured he wouldn't make it to old age. RIP.

You know what? I hadn't factored that in. Now that I think about it, back when the tension leading up to the race riots was going on, we didn't have all this stupid stuff - what, we just had The Real World. I guess it is less likely that we'll see that kind of clash again, with all the mind-numbing addictive television out there.

What bothers me about Rodney King is that he became this revered guy. He was a criminal, drunk driver, drug addict, batterer and liked to expose himself.

http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/lapd/kingarrests.html

The night it happened, drove 100 mph drunk and then didn't listen to the cops when finally pulled over. He grabbed one cop's ass and they thought he was going for her gun -- he could've been shot dead by the cops with no questions asked for simply that.

He's no civil rights hero. He was a criminal who got rich because he had the good fortune to have stupid cops beat him. Did he deserve to get beaten? No, but at the same rate, he could've killed people with his drunk driving so my sympathy level goes way down.

i think the discourse on this thread is sorta healthy.
it was a controversial & emotional series of events and not everyone is going to have the same perspective of who the good guys and the bad guys were.
it's good that we wound/wind up revisiting & reflecting 20 years later (it's too bad rk/anyone died for the convos to take place). it was heated then and it's still heated today. #expecttheexpected.
yes, bjork you, long time no see (*makes a sad face*). i miss not being able to be online much lately due to a lot changing over here (for the good) and the final countdown (mere weeks away) for the big move to alo-ho-haa alo-oh-haaa.
-ffs, i even quit ebay (temporarily, of course). -THAT took some doin.
so when i post here it's usually a quick hit/response and run.
BUT IT'S ALL GONNA BE SOOOO WORTH IT (and the 12k i've spent so far on the move) when in dec i'm typing "merry christmas d-sluts!!!" from under a coconut tree on a WARM BEACH.

Battle Battle Everywhere. Really I used to come here everyday to laugh at all the intelligent humor that was here. I commented but have rarely gotten response which is fine but it seems as though there are cliques and some really negative ish brewing all the time. Dlisters we are all we have. Most existing governments are in the ish and there are tons of crazies out here. If we don't have each others backs then we're screwed. Someone else commented (I lost track of the comment so I can't quote you sorry) That if we abandoned the social problems we have and focus on the upper echelon we might get somewhere. Seriously if you have an opposing side breathe get over yourself and explain your side. Use facts cause opinions are like you know what and everybody's got one. If you don't personally know each other what the hell are the attacks for? You don't ever have to sit next to each other at the lunch table I swear. Be Peace people.
BTW regardless of anything anyone says the crimes against black men have caused them to be raised in criminally corrupt circumstances. When you start life below poverty level you have a different reality. He wasn't perfect. He was someone's father and someone's son he was someone's fiance. Anyone on here want to admit that if you got beaten within an inch of your life you wouldn't turn to the bottle and the smoke. Come now many of you are already there what's your excuse? I'm not even judging what I'm trying to say is it looks like a lot of you are.

finally saw new episode of True Blood, so now I can say "thank you" to everyone who has wished me well and sent me (a total stranger, and a Black one with bad habits, kinda like Rodney King, so we're still on topic!) good vibes during my mother's struggle with terminal brain cancer. Dlisted has its good side.

maybe the most relevant thing to say is - be grateful for life while you have it, while you can type on a keyboard and go to the bathroom on your own, and be as much of a hateful creep or a sweet, kind, compassionate person as you choose to be - because no matter what you do you may not always have the freedom to make those choices on your own. o.k, i'm gonna try to do this(be on-topic), but you can't hold me to a standard of actual reason because... well, lets face it... i'm an idiot...

Rodney King, in my opinion, was a flash point, "an awakening" so to speak...

the guy, if i'm correct, has been plagued with "issues" ever since his role in front of the hidden camera, and it is not surprising that he's now dead... not that i would wish it on him, but it's not surprising.

to end my rambling mess(i hope it was on-topicy enough for your liking)... this guy's death is going to be forgotten in a matter of minutes, but his original "claim to fame" changed a lot of perception.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You have good points. I think he won't be forgotten quite so fast, as his case was the catalyst for so much action. Unfortunate as it was, that he was the straw (so to speak), there was so much tension leading up to it between race and class, that it just boiled over. I see some parallels in our current state of affairs, with the unrest with the 99%'ers - I kind of think there might be another "Rodney King" that will lead to some kind of similar situation. That's just my thought...
Lope, there is a big difference between using force and brutal force. The issue wasn't that they were rough with him, it was that they kept on fucking beating him when it was wayyy beyond necessary. And just because THESE cops did a shitty thing and people are angry doesn't mean everyone thinks ALL cops are bad. I honestly don't understand why this has to be explained to people over and over.
Haldol is an antipsychotic for people with schizophrenia. Yeah, it would make you sleep. And probably zombified for a few days, too. Definitely a person who took it would not have the energy or desire to flame and troll.
He wasn't innocent, and he didn't want to change his life. People who want to change their lives put actions into place that cause their lives to change. When someone is "trying to change their life" for 25 years, it's a little silly to still be saying that. I've lost count of how many times he's been arrested for assault, fleeing cops, drug possession, etc. Were the cops harsh? Yes. Should they have been? Probably.
People forget that he was ordered over and over and over again to lay down and stop trying to get up, and he got up every single time. He refused police orders, had already fled police and had just put them through a high-speed chase. He was also on parole at the time for a robbery, and police knew he was violent as well as drunk. I don't remember him ever being remorseful about the many, many people he put in danger, about that fact that he'd been driving drunk off his ass or that he refused to comply with police when he got out. So, I don't feel any remorse that he's dead. It's fashionable to hate the police, but what would you do right now if someone tried to get into your house? Not call the police because of the Rodney King tape? Right.
Since I didn't say it before, RIP, Rodney King.
I, too, wish this Rock of Ages would spell the end of Cruise's career, but I doubt it will. He had a run of bad movies for a couple of years - BoxOfficeMojo reports that Lions for Lambs(2007) had a domestic gross of $15 million versus a production budget of $25 million; Valkyrie (2008), $83 million DG vs $75 million budget; and Knight & Day (2010), $76 million DG, $117 million budget. These numbers look horrible to me, but I have no idea if the international numbers help, since I don't know how much of a cut the studios get for foreign distribution.
So I guess the most recent MI movie put Cruise back on top - domestic gross $209 million, budget $145 million. But it seems strange to me that 1 (somewhat moderate) success could wipe out the shit of his last 3.
The crappy $15 million Rock of Ages is said to have grossed this weekend wouldn't pay Cruise's typical salary, let alone CZJ's or the rights to the songs used. BoxOfficeMojo lists the production budget on this at $75 million.
I just can't stand Tommy Girl.
Secondly, after having read this thread, I'm proud to be in the ever-dwindling group of people that still have reverence for the complexities of the human condition.
And lastly, I have also noticed the gratuitous amounts of unnecessary nastiness and viciousness on the D and it's been a huge turn-off. So to all who took the time to voice their opinion on this very sensitive issue respectfully while providing cohesive and intelligent examples in defense of your beliefs, I salute you. I would point you out one by one but I'm not about to wade back through all that other vitriolic filth, that's for damn sure...
Give me back my goddamn HELMET!
Zorba-the-Geek's picture
RIP Rodney King
He was a troubled man and an addict, but he didn't deserve all the hatred, blame and contempt he received after LA riots. No matter his crimes he was the victim of a cruel and excessive police beating, something no one should take lightly lest you wish to live in a police state. And for those who say "he deserved it, he was trash", I ask, what is your definition of trash? Recently in Orange County a young, homeless schizophrenic man was beaten to death by the police. He was a social outcast, and his death probably would have been disregarded except someone filmed him being beaten to death. I've never watched the video because I just can't deal with that shit; apparently he cries for his dad to help him. The police beat that man to death because to them, he was the definition of trash, I am sure. But he had a family and people who loved him, and I'm sure the same with King.
