There's only two rules I usually follow when picking HSOTD and one is that if it's not an inanimate object, they have to currently be alive enough to accept a HSOTD plaque if I held a ceremony in their honor in the conference room of a Super 8 somewhere. I think Gaydar kicks in way sooner than that, atleast for some kids. They may not know gay and all it means, but they can tell when someone is "different." I knew this kid from third grade was "different" by how he acted, later I was like, Darnell was totally gay... Turns out, he did in fact come out as gay. There were a few people I felt that way about, that all eventually came out of the closet. I also knew Lance Bass was gay the moment I saw NSynce for the first time, and that was back when I was 10. It doesn't bother me now, and it didn't bother me then, but I knew something was up.
I think you're right about it never kicking in for some people. I knew a lady who was a BIG Claymate, and at the time she was in her early 40s, and this was around the time the gay rumors were circling about, and she told me she didn't believe it. Wow - if either my nephew or niece had tried to do anything even remotely like this at their bar/bat mitzvahs, their parents/paternal grandparents would have thrown blankets over them and carried them out of the room. but you gotta be careful if you see it, because it might get scared and run off, ive had that experience trying to retrieve runaway dogs i saw on the road on three occassions and one time i was like "ok i better get them or they will get run over" cuz it was at a busy intersection but everytime i tried to call it over, it ran away further and it even ran on the road and a car almost hit it, i was so distressed by the whole thing i just stopped chasing it.

@ Heroic Cupcake ~ If I were the owner, and you came and told me you think you just saw my missing dog, then the OWNER should be the one over there looking for it. Did the owner express any interest in going where you think you saw it and actually looking for it? The owner should put up more signs in the area where you last saw the dog and add a reward. Preferably the owner needs to go out everyday at the same time to the same place where you last saw the dog go and whistle or call it and put down food and water and just sit for an hour, talking to the dog as though the owner can see it. The owner should do this for as long as it takes to hopefully see the dog or to get the dog to start coming around at feeding time. It's possible the dog is so frightened, that it's hanging out in the same general area and not venturing too far. If YOU see the dog again, talk to it as you try to offer it food and to get it used to the sound of your voice. You may want to start carrying dog treats in your purse or pocket, just in case you spot the dog while you're out and about in that area. If you're going over to the area you last saw it, to try to catch it, make sure you have a leash with you. Then sit down and try to get the dog to come near you as you sit with extra tempting food, like canned food on a paper plate, deli roast beef or steak. The smaller you make yourself appear to the dog when you're trying to approach it, the more likely it will approach or trust you. Sitting down is best. If all else fails, the owner of the dog should see if a local rescue league has a live catch trap and set it up with a food trail into the trap. (if you go this route you will need to check on the trap every couple of hours to ensure the safety of the dog, or any other animal that may be caught in it, once it is caught). Again, the owner should be taking the lead on this, unless they're physically incapable to doing it. You can offer to help them, but the dog will most likely approach someone they know rather than a stranger. The owner should also give one of their missing dog posters to local animal shelters so if someone does happen to bring it in, the owner will hopefully be contacted. Good luck.
What's more sad than the fact that 10,000 animals got euthanized today? The fact that because of the ignorance of humans, it will happen again tomorrow. End the cycle. Spay and neuter your pets & please adopt your next pet from a shelter.
