Mel & Michael Suspend Themselves After The Nurse They Pranked Commits Suicide
Mel and Michael, the Australians radio hosts behind the Duchess Kate hospital prank, have put themselves in time out after the nurse who transferred them to Kate's nurse killed herself today. SCA, the company that owns 2Day FM released this statement to TMZ:
"SCA and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII’s Hospital. SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy."
Mel and Michael also hit the delete button their Twitter accounts and are refusing to open their mouths to the media about this. A rep for King Edward VIII Hospital said that Nurse Jacintha Saldanha was a good nurse and liked by all her co-workers, and they also said that she wasn't punished for transferring the call. I said this in my other post, but Nurse Jacintha only answered the phone, because the receptionist was away.
There seems to be two reactions to this. Some people are screaming that Mel and Michael need to be fired, skinned alive and turned into poopy bags for the Queen's corgis. The others are saying that no, it wasn't not funny, but it was just a dumb prank and the DJs shouldn't be blamed. As for me, I'm on the side that isn't saying shit, because THE QUEEN is not the one and has 007 on speed dial.

I have my doubts that someone would commit suicide over this. She probably had depression or some other malady. Anyways, exactly what personal medical information did the nurse divulge? The Duchess is "freshening up?" She's "feeling better?" We all know Kate was there for the heaves, that was what the palace released, no? Where was her privacy then? Hardly anything to get your panties in a knot for.
I'm definitely on the side of the people who say this prank was out of line. No, of course the DJ's aren't going to know that she was unstable or on the ledge. But you do have to expect that not everyone is going to react to a prank in a rational or pleasant manner. They need to accept the consequences and move on.
Bitch can't take a joke? If your life is so meaningless that when two assholes prank call you and that causes you to commit suicide? You should be dead.
I don't know about this poor woman's state of mind prior to her death, but I can imagine she must have been going through hell these last few days. It was a mean spirited prank to start with and the backlash this woman faced must have been quite overwhelming.
Since when is it appropriate to humiliate an innocent member of the public for entertainment? I hope those vile DJs are never reinstated. The radio station should make a financial contribution to Jacintha's family.

Irish Fury: I, too, suffer from SAD. I used to suffer from 24/7 depression but discovered I was hypothyroid....95.5 degrees body temp midday. I take OTC pig thyroid, and I'm back at it with normal body temps. Whatta difference!!!
SAD is another deal. Since we don't get the sunlight we need, I read we need vitamin D capsules. Been doing that, and it really helps. It's a simple approach and seems to be doing the job.

So. It's ok for them to pull their "oh, it's just a little prank" in public and humiliate and mock this woman (among others) before the entire planet, but they can't address the consequences of that prank in public and so they remove themselves and hide out? COWARDLY.
You know, if you can't deal with the outcome of your public prank in public, maybe you shouldn't be doing that kind of thing in the first place. No, they had no way of knowing she'd commit suicide, but man up. If they can do the prank, then they should face whatever happens after that. I hope they're haunted by this for the rest of their lives.

I have to feel for the nurse. Just think about those times when you fuck up at work. When I fuck up at work, I know about it and maybe a few others. I obsess about it, berate myself and then am ultimately humiliated. And then it blows over. Imagine your fuck-up at work WAS KNOWN BY EVERYONE!!!!! Not just everyone at work but internationally. And your mistake meant inquiries and task force meetings and changes to protocol. All because of you. And everyone knows it's because of you. It would take a pretty strong person to withstand that.
I don't know how I feel about the DJs but I agree with other posters, radio DJs are the worst, especially in the morning. Just STFU, no one cares. Satellite radio is somewhat better (but I fucking hate Madison).

Just a bunch of ranting and raving. I agree that there had to be more going on in this nurse's life than just this but as someone who struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts frequently, if you're already low, plus experiencing seasonal depression then heap on the enormous public scrutiny and press she's gotten and I'm sure a lot of shit at work no matter what they're saying - I can understand what happened. I can't justify it, excuse it or blame it on anyone, but I can see why she felt it was an option and I could see how in a moment, I might make the same choice.
I wouldn't place all of the blame on the DJs at all - but they did contribute to some of the cascade, that can't be denied. She was obviously already fragile (which they shouldn't have been expected to know) and this may have been that one thing that set the final chain of events in motion.

There has to be more to the story, because as it is being currently told it's making feel zero sympathy for a mother of two young children to take her life and selfishly leave her children behind with emotional scars to boot over the embarrassment or twitter harassment over being pranked.
Even if she did lose her job, and the loss of income to support her family or something to that extent,was weighing on her, how could suicide be any better an option? You're still gone, you forfeit any life insurance or pension left to your surviving family members and you actually add a financial burden with your funeral costs.
I just can't fathom this suicide over those reasons.?????
