Mel And Michael Are Officially Out Of A Job
SCA, the company that owns Australia's 2Day FM, has permanently shut down Mel and Michael's radio show, stopped all advertising on 2Day FM and pressed pause on future pranks until further notice. Before Mel Greig and Michael Christian were handed pink slips, they gave an interview to A Current Affair and cried while apologizing to the family of the nurse who committed suicide after their royal prank.
Mel and Michael weren't paid for talking to A Current Affair, apparently. A Current Affair's Tracy Grimshaw asked them how the prank came to be and who was their target. While looking like a pile of pure sad, Mel said that the prank was just supposed to be some silly thing and nothing more. Their awful British accents were supposed to be the target of the prank. Mel thought they'd get the dial tone as soon as the receptionist heard them talking like Fat Bastard. When Nurse Jacintha Saldanha picked up the phone, because the receptionist was away, and immediately transferred the call, Mel and Michael thought they were being sent to a complaints section where all pranksters are sent. They thought every radio host in the world pranked the hospital.
Mel and Michael found out about Nurse Jacintha's death on Saturday morning and said they think of her family every single second of the day. They both said several times during the interview that even the Florida psychic who Lindsay Lohan punched couldn't have predicted that their dumb prank would've ended like this. As Mel broke down, she said this:
"There’s not a minute that goes by where we don’t think about her family and what they must be going through and the thought we may have played a part in that is gutwrenching. These prank calls are made every day, on every radio station, in every country around the world and they have been for a long time and no-one could’ve imagined this to happen."
They both played dumb when Tracy asked them about the usual protocol of their prank calls. Mel and Michael said that they're just simple pranking puppets. They do the pre-recorded prank and pass it off to whoever, and whatever happens after that is beyond their control. Since there's really no HIPAA laws in Britain, SCA says that they didn't do anything illegal, but are still cooperating with the investigation. SCA's legal department reviewed the prank before it went to air. This isn't the first prank that got 2Day FM into trouble.
As everyone has said before, this is the only time in history when I actually want to see Ashton Kutcher's face. I really wish Nurse Jacintha was still alive and that the hospital was pranking Mel and Michael back. I watched that interview waiting for Ashton to jump out and shout, "You've been PUNK'D!"
And since I am a superficial piece of trash and whatever brain cells I have left live in my ass lips, I did think to myself, "That Michael Christian dude is kind of hot."

Yes.. Thats the European spelling :/ err haha!
The cause of death has not been announced, everyone seems to be assuming that it was suicide. She could have stroked out or had a heart attack as the result of the stress. That's the trouble with pranks, the pranksters are only thinking of their own amusement, not the impact on the person they are pranking. If the the radio station lawyers approved the prank, I hope the family sues the hell out of the station.

No, actually the police do not do that unless ordered 'from high'. To even dignify his shit by responding. Her death has not been 'declared suicide' , on the bbc the report was that she was found dead. Says nothing about suicide. Same with other news reports that also address it as 'suspected suicide'. Big difference to what you are saying dipshit. And the autopsy is tomorrow. Lay off the weed dickhole.

God, I hope that's true. Anyone got sources, so I can see if I have to hate them while I defend them?">
His name was Kyle Sandilands and these two, Mel and Michael, had nothing to do with it. They weren't even on the station at the time.

Although this is a sad story all around, being the victim of a prank call is no reason to take one's own life, especially if you're the mother of two children. I feel for this poor woman and her family, but I'm sure she had other issues going on.
If all the people I ever crank called had committed suicide, I would have a lot of blood on my hands!
That being said, I'm just horrified by the virtual mob lynching those two DJs were subjected to. They had no way to predict things would turn out that way, and I'm sure their apologies are sincere. I can also guarantee this was the last prank call they'll ever make.
the hospital reprimanded the nurse & was going to fire her ass in a few months after the shitstorm settled down cause kate was really p.o. about it.
that princess kate is a real piece of work. a royal bitch.
these jagoff djs got what they served.
i got inside track info about this shit.

Where are your sources? Sorry but thats bollocks. There was no receptionist she simply put the call througj, she was not the nurse that gave the details, she had bot been given a warning and the Royal Family never complained. If you want sources I can provide enough links to news articles. Where did you get this information from?
Am appalled by some of the comments. The conspiracy stuff is just beyond stupid; you are commenting rubbish on a gossip site. That contextualises it. Ill take a wild guess and say the cocks queefing this shit have nothing better to do. Secondly calling her a 'dumb nurse'. Nurses work incredibly long shifts in a stressful job. The nurse in question came from India ten years ago. She was in the middle of a shift and answered a phone she was not meant to because there was no receptionist. Not being a native speaker she would not have picked up on the crappy accents and not being a receptionist, being a nurse that probably had a thousand other things on her mind she would bot have necessary thought it would be two dicks crank calling. Crank calls are funny but you have to be a special kind of arsehole to crank call a hospital; do they really think people working there have nothing better to do? No, they would not have made the call if they thought that would be the consequence. Her family have said she was alone and confused and felt awful about it. You would have to be under incredible pressure to react like and be pushed over the edge. Maybe you are not getting the same level of news coverage or maybe your tiny minds cant quite manage to read a whole news article without it being regurgitated through a gossip site. Tragic for everyone involved on every level, does it really warrant people with nothing better to do coming up with toilet paper theories or flippant labelling of a nurse and ill or dumb?
two things:
1) i doubt this incident could have been reason for her suicide. it probably had an impact but it hardly was the ONLY reason
2) so many people hate on the presenters. but virtually every radio station in the world makes prank calls. it's a standard, and for some reason people like it. they didn't do anything new/unseen. i know that the outcome is a terrible thing but it's not like they put the gun into her hands
The whole story on this nurse's mental and emotional state has not been completely brought to light because I guarantee it wasn't the prank ITSELF that made her off herself. She might have had a stress disorder that amplified stressful situations like this, I know because I have a few stress disorders that amplify the tiniest of stressful situations that can leave me in the bed for days, which is why I could never handle a stressful job being a nurse, Idk if this was the case with this lady, but something defintely wasn't clicking right in the first place.

"And it don't matter who you are, if I'm doin my job, its your resolve that breaks..Cause the hook brings you back, I ain't tellin you no lie. The hook brings you back, on that you can rely."
I honestly had the knee jerk reaction a few days ago when this broke to burn the djs at the stake but I now feel sad for everyone involved in this mess, including the djs. These pranks have been pulled by radio shows for decades and the context of this one obviously makes it special case. My boyfriend was actually pranked by one show (his ex set him up) to think the feds and dea were closing in on him for something or other, like the fact he had some pot in the house. So if he had killed himself or was the paranoid type and had taken a hostage or walked outside and shot someone in law enforcement, would the radio dj be to blame? His ex for setting it up? I know we hate personal responsibility in this era but nothing is black and white it seems. Yes, I don't like the very nature of pranks, victimizing someone so the rest of the world can laugh at them is the lowest form of humor, and listening to the prank calls always made me feel weird.
I agree with people saying these djs have become scapegoats and I'd like to hear from the producer who greenlighted and approved the prank in the first place, especially considering this isn't the first time this station has been in trouble. Imagine living with this guilt the rest of your life, luckily these two seem stable enough not to take their own lives over the stress of this tragedy. For all we know they have families at home too.
OK srs bzns time is over. Long time reader of about 6 years, somehow this is my first time commenting. Glad to join the smut :)
Something is a miss here. This woman was a nurse working in a hospital. It's high-pressure to work in a hospital. Like every other sort of org., people make mistakes there. In fact, a lot of mistakes happen that a lot of people know nothing about.
A friend of mine is an endocrinologist who got a fellowship to a VERY prominent university medical center. Docs, nurses, and pharmacists made mistakes. In some cases, these were life-threatening. This by comparison is nothing.
This nurse doesn't seem like she was going to be fired, she was not the one who gave out details about Kate Middleton-all she did was transfer the call.
Yes, this was a stupid prank, but these two are being vilified to an alarming degree.
If this is what caused this woman to go over the edge, then how or why was she working in a hospital in the first place?
Is is possible her suicide really had nothing to do with this prank?
Gee, I wonder if Mabel/Angela saw this one coming, too?

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet but my sneaking suspicion is that the palace had this nurse killed and staged it to look like a suicide. People apparantly turn up dead around Buckingham Palace all the time and I've heard too many stories about the people who work for the royal family doing sick things like this and worse, if you believe the illuminati rumors.
There's just something too fishy about this story for me to believe this woman would have killed herself over such a stupid prank..
This is the biggest pile of shit I have ever read. Where are you from? Ill guess not Europe. It's funny, I live in London and have never heard of this. What people turn up dead? At least every few years a journalist gets through employment at Buckingham Palace and theyve never reported on this. You have not only made yourself look mentally ill but brainless! By too many stories do you mean you have spent too many nights in your basement looking at the internet? Is this your only way of communicating with the outside world?! Utter gimp get a life!
Good thing this didn't happen in the 60s or Allen Funt would have never made Candid Camera.
Such fucking bullshit that these two were supposed to foresee suicide over a stupid joke.

...totally agree...
...and FFS people, doesn't the whole 'suicide' thing seem just a tad suspicious?...
...the 'authorities' declared suicide before a preliminary investigation was even completed, much less a full autopsy...
...it's surprisingly easy to make a homicide look lika suicide, and any experienced coroner or detective will tell you that it often takes a full inquest to make a proper determination...
...something stinks here...stinks bad...I still say it was probably some overzealous MI6 control freak who thought he/she would make an example of this woman to any other poor sod who may be even remotely connected to the Royals...
...and as for the prank, with all due respect to this poor woman's family, team It Wasn't NOT Funny....

I get the feeling their lawyers advised them to tape this apology. They probably feel regret but this gives the station the PR they need too and may help with the personal attacks on them. I agree they're getting a lot of airtime because of the Royal connection and because they're cute. I can see them flogging books too.

These two are being strung out so hard i feel like they will kill themselves.
It's sad, but some dumb nurse falls for "I'm the Queen" and allows confidential information to get out. Maybe in a way this is a good thing -- maybe the entire world will know you do not give out fucking patient info to anyone who calls.
And who knows what this woman's life was really like? Ultimately, she decided to make her children motherless. Her death is on her not two DJ's sporting terrible accents and playing a joke.
I agree with everyone who says it's ridiculous these people are being crucified over what they did. It was just a silly prank, completely benign in comparison to what Howard Stern has been doing for years and years. (I think Stern is/can be funny, by the way.) Remember the "ghost in the elevator" prank from a week or two ago? THAT I found completely unfunny. Someone could have had a heart attack, for real.
These DJs do not deserve the scorn and hatred being heaped on them. Poor Jacintha clearly had very serious problems long before this whole thing happened.
I think pranks are always stupid and usually mean. It's a way to pick on someone and mess with their emotions, get a reaction, so it's really asking for it because some people don't do well when put on the spot that way. This is an extreme reaction but except for the types of pranks that initiate someone to a team or whatever, pranks suck.

This one was only a big deal because the Royal family was involved, but for sure they got away with other cruel pranks in the past. The public, media and authorities if Jacinda had a history of mental problems before this happened. Though not exactly innocent by any means, these two are just the pretty faces of a radio show and are being used as scapegoats, where are the producers, writers and radio station owner though?
Yes yes, there are other radio shows who pull these kinds of pranks. I've heard bigger cruel pranks from a NY based radio show in spanish called "El Vacilon de La Mañana" but I conviced myself that they were scripted, after they gave hell some guy for months.
Has anybody heard this before?

What they did was "indecent"? There's going to be a backlash alright and they'll be happily employed in the future. This is as idiotic as saying that since that Latina singer went down in a Lear Jet yesterday that Lear Jets should close down business.

there are different issues being confused. They are not responsible for the nurse's death, but they are still tacky as fuck and should be permabanned by the Queen instead of going on tv sobbing. They just get more and more airtime out of this. You know they will write books and it will be really big type.
Still a lot not explained.
Dog on Moon, the other story was a different DJ called Kyle. A mother thought her teenage daughter was having underaged sex and was hiding it. When they did the test it turned out she had been abused and hadn't told anyone. Whole story should never have gone to air.

Don't feel too sorry for these two. This was only a matter of time for them. Twice before their "pranks" had to be investigated by police. One prank had a mother hook her daughter up to a lie detector machine and then the mother grilled the girl about whether or not she was still a virgin. That was how the mother found out her daughter had been raped at age 12. And these two idiots put the whole thing on the air.

I agree. They couldn't have foreseen this and it isn't their fault she killed herself. However, they were possibly playing with other people's careers when they did this and they should have thought of that before they did it. This wasn't calling to find out the condition of the local vicar's wife, this was calling to find out the condition of the wife of one of the most famous public figures in the world. As soon as they realized they'd been put through, they should have hung the hell up.

I agree. She was either already depressed for a long while, or someone did something. Either way, nothing is making sense..yet.
I'm sorry the woman killed herself but I find it difficult to believe this is the sole reason she killed herself. She only let the call through; the other nurse actually gave out information. Nonetheless, these pranks are stupid and should just stop. If people want to humiliate themselves by going on TV and acting like assholes fine.
