Mel And Michael Are Officially Out Of A Job
SCA, the company that owns Australia's 2Day FM, has permanently shut down Mel and Michael's radio show, stopped all advertising on 2Day FM and pressed pause on future pranks until further notice. Before Mel Greig and Michael Christian were handed pink slips, they gave an interview to A Current Affair and cried while apologizing to the family of the nurse who committed suicide after their royal prank.
Mel and Michael weren't paid for talking to A Current Affair, apparently. A Current Affair's Tracy Grimshaw asked them how the prank came to be and who was their target. While looking like a pile of pure sad, Mel said that the prank was just supposed to be some silly thing and nothing more. Their awful British accents were supposed to be the target of the prank. Mel thought they'd get the dial tone as soon as the receptionist heard them talking like Fat Bastard. When Nurse Jacintha Saldanha picked up the phone, because the receptionist was away, and immediately transferred the call, Mel and Michael thought they were being sent to a complaints section where all pranksters are sent. They thought every radio host in the world pranked the hospital.
Mel and Michael found out about Nurse Jacintha's death on Saturday morning and said they think of her family every single second of the day. They both said several times during the interview that even the Florida psychic who Lindsay Lohan punched couldn't have predicted that their dumb prank would've ended like this. As Mel broke down, she said this:
"There’s not a minute that goes by where we don’t think about her family and what they must be going through and the thought we may have played a part in that is gutwrenching. These prank calls are made every day, on every radio station, in every country around the world and they have been for a long time and no-one could’ve imagined this to happen."
They both played dumb when Tracy asked them about the usual protocol of their prank calls. Mel and Michael said that they're just simple pranking puppets. They do the pre-recorded prank and pass it off to whoever, and whatever happens after that is beyond their control. Since there's really no HIPAA laws in Britain, SCA says that they didn't do anything illegal, but are still cooperating with the investigation. SCA's legal department reviewed the prank before it went to air. This isn't the first prank that got 2Day FM into trouble.
As everyone has said before, this is the only time in history when I actually want to see Ashton Kutcher's face. I really wish Nurse Jacintha was still alive and that the hospital was pranking Mel and Michael back. I watched that interview waiting for Ashton to jump out and shout, "You've been PUNK'D!"
And since I am a superficial piece of trash and whatever brain cells I have left live in my ass lips, I did think to myself, "That Michael Christian dude is kind of hot."

What a huge lesson in the ripple effect. Just because something leaves our stream of consciousness doesn't mean that it isn't still out there making waves.

If I see something I haven't seen before, I'll throw a dollar at it.
I still don't get why she killed herself.
A) The prank wasn't mean-spirited. It was a silly stupid prank phone call that most people just chuckled at.
B) Nobody was making fun of her. Nobody said "oh that stupid fucking nurse. What a fucking useless idiot."
She had to have more going on upstairs than humiliation. She wasn't going to be fired or anything. She robbed her kids of a mother because she couldn't handle being humiliated. It's just so bizarre.

I wish it had been that boss-eyed cunt Mel.
Don't feel too sorry for these two. This was only a matter of time for them. Twice before their "pranks" had to be investigated by police. One prank had a mother hook her daughter up to a lie detector machine and then the mother grilled the girl about whether or not she was still a virgin. That was how the mother found out her daughter had been raped at age 12. And these two idiots put the whole thing on the air.

The woman was from India and I bet she felt like she put damage to the royal family. I wouldn't doubt everything else in her life was just fine but a mistake like this was catastrophic in her mind and felt she had to punish herself.

You're welcome. I would see you type "fuxk" and get worried about offending your sensibilities with my constant flinging of the "cuxt" word, like I might get clipped on the ear and dragged to the front of the class.
It's weird. They destroyed a woman's life and in turn their lives are ruined. What you put out in the world does come back to you.
I hope they both get professional help for this and don't follow in that woman's footsteps. It's going to be hard. Not only are they out of a job, but the whole world knows they fucked up and that's the risk you take when you decide to fuck with some of the most powerful people in the world.
Apology Rejected! When you are apologizing that your stupidity may have had some part in a person's death you don't try to minimize the blame within the apology. "No one could have known" = You know it now, bitch. Fuck you.
http://13-mitred-abbots.tumblr.com/
It doesn't take much brain power to understand that a stunt like that is going to have some kind of negative repercussion for the person being pranked. No, you would not expect suicide, but she could reasonably have been fired and her life would have changed drastically after that.
I've been in radio since 1979, part of that time on the highest-rated morning show in my state. Normal people are born with the understanding that if you have to be mean to be funny, then you are not funny. You're just mean.

After all, suicide over something a holiday in the Bahamas could have cured IS ludicrous, especially for a parent.

God don't like ugly.
This story brings to mind that scenario years ago during the height of afternoon talk shows (Ricki Lake, Jerry Springer, Jenny Jones etc) when the Jenny Jones show came under fire for a murder involving a guest. A man revealed his gay crush to his male (supposedly straight)friend on the show. Like a week later after the taping the friend murdered the guy out of "embarrassment", he felt publicly humiliated because his friend and the show made it made it seem like he was gay. Really dude?!...Essentially these hosts need to use better judgement when it comes to these "pranks" however, they (we) can never predict or control how people will react. Who woulve predicted a suicide??

Though Ithink the woman in question had other problems, you just can't screw with people like that anymore.
And I am ashamed of the Media and this planet for making morning sickness and a hospital visit such big news. Who cares. More proof that everything on CNN and every other news organization is bullshit.
...............................
This is just sad and terrible for everyone involved. I think Kate most be feeling sad herself that her doing something as normal as going to the hospital has resulted in this tragic turn of events. I think that they will need to keep all things baby a secret, because we just witnessed how people can be indirectly hurt and its just going to get worse.
Ridiculous. But what do you expect in today's EVERYONE'S A VICTIM AND IT'S ALWAYS SOMEONE'S ELSES FAULT society. And sure enough idiots here saying "her family should sue the radio station" when probably her supervisor at the hospital and husband and co-workers called her dumber than shit to her face.
Well, they could never have predicted this, that's true, but it still happened. So I think it appropriate that the radio station show that they are not in support of this type of prank. Maybe in future radio shows could stay away from emergency workers? If anything, maybe businesses will pay more attention and tighten their security protocol for these types of situations too.

all this radio pranking bullshit was tired 25 years ago when Howard Stern was king, but nowadays, it's just plain STOOPID. and yeah, you never know whose sensitive psyche you're fucking with, so DON'T DO IT ASSWIPES.
Two things:
1. We STILL don't know how Saldanha killed herself. No mention of it. In most reported suicides we at least get an idea; hanging, OD, jumped. I find it really fishy that it wasn't reported. It's ghoulish, but I want to know.
2. Who was even making fun of Saldanha? The focus was really on the nurse who gave out the information, not the one who put the call through.

Isn't it going to legitimize depression's irrational feelings of "they'll miss me when I'm gone" to continue to paint this as a crime perpetrated by the DJs? That could have terrible unintended consequences if other people hope to be vindicated by suicide.
_______________________________
Obviously the prank was only one contributing factor. However, I think these prank DJs need to be held responsible for never taking into account the effect their stupid pranks have on real people. It's irresponsible to harass sick people (hospital patients) or people at work (nurses) and then broadcast them repeatedly and globally without their consent.

"We wanted to be hung up on" ???
Fuck off. Nobody who makes a prank phone call wants to be hung up on. They want to string the other person along, at least get some kind of reaction BEFORE they get hung up on.
It's true, though. Born in Aus and lived most of my life there. Every prank call I've ever heard WANTED to be hung up on. That's the joke. If you're berated before hand - even better. Getting told off and hung up on = peals of laughter. I can't explain why this is - it just is. Why is Honey Boo-Boo and Justin Bieber so popular?
Why they thought calling a hospital was a good idea is beyond me.
Shut up you ugly poo-faced git!
From what I've learned about it the woman was middle eastern, maybe Pakistani? Immigrant, pulled herself up and made a nice life for herself and family.
I know bringing shame on the family is highly frowned upon in that culture. Maybe her humiliation compelled her do the only thing she thought could do.
I know this ain't changing people's minds but the reality is other people in the world don't think like we do.

You speak from the heart with such total honesty.
I had a dear friend suffering from depression.
She was such a "happy" person. Loved by many many people who just could not understand why she was depressed. She had everything. Loving family, good job etc..
They kept telling her she'd get over it.
She did. She drove her car to a dock, got out and jumped in. She could not swim. After that,
her family became quite active in mental illness
groups. Everyone was just shocked--I was not but I was 2000 miles away. I hope and pray for you Snowball. You get past this bad stage because you know it will pass. Be strong sweetie.
Idiots. Prank calling a hospital is never a good thing, wasting human resources and time. They couldn't know the poor nurse would die, 'cause everyone has a different snapping point, but who prank calls a damn hospital
Mel's publicity shots w/Michael prior to this incident made her look completely different than she looks now.
What's more sad than the fact that 10,000 animals got euthanized today? The fact that because of the ignorance of humans, it will happen again tomorrow. End the cycle. Spay and neuter your pets & please adopt your next pet from a shelter.

It's all fun and games until someone loses and eye - or kills themselves.
Allegedly they tried calling 5 times prior to getting put through, so they're bullhitting. Also, if they had followed protocol and asked her if she was ok with having this aired (as they do on all prank shows - the people we see are ok with being laughed at) she could have said no and this would never have happened.
Snowball, you had the courage to say what I am frequently too afraid to admit to. Do you know, a couple weeks ago I had a meltdown and told my mother about how I'd planned my suicide several times in the past, and cut myself, and she never knew at the time. The little fuck face actually had the audacity to tell me that I was saying it to be manipulative and to get people to feel sorry for me. Next time I write a note I will make sure to emphasize what a fucking God awful thing that was to say to me. Spiteful, yes, but what a vile thing to say to anyone, family or not.

I've cut, I've written suicide letters so many times, I've written a dozen wills and I've physically gathered what I needed to commit suicide and no one knew it. I may do it again tomorrow because I'm on a downswing again. I don't blame her at all because I understand. I pity her and I feel enormously sad for her family though.

lol, she told the truth. She said Kate Middleclass wasn't barfing up a storm like the media had reported and was sleeping the day away. You don't tell the truth about the royals, you know. Thus, off with her head.
I don't think the nurse killed herself over a prank, there must be some underlying issues that made her take her life. But these guys have pulled of some disgusting pranks in the past, so they get no sympathy from me. TMZ has a few examples on their site, like the time they made a daughter believe her mother was dying (she was convinced by her sister who would win a $1000 if she pulled it off and she did). This prompted a police investigation because the sister called 911. Or the time they had a mother put her 12 yr old daughter through a lie detector test, only to have the girl reveal she was raped. The family involve in these pranks are just as bad.
I see Mel is so distraught over this, she had time to curl her hair.
Tears were off long enough for make-up, too.
Shut up you ugly poo-faced git!
I actually feel badly for these two and I think they are being persecuted and scapegoated. Everyone wants to point fingers for this poor woman who committed suicide over a prank, a prank she was not in trouble for and for which she took very little, if any, of the brunt. Clearly there was more going on, but god forbid we don't rush to blame someone so the reason is easily diagnosed and swept under the carpet. This smacks of so many of the gay teens who have killed themselves over the past couple of years where the family and the media is so quick to blame bullying. Sure, let's blame anything instead of figuring out the real reasons and taking responsibility.
You make me hate my hips! I hate my hips!
Whamo I don't think we know the whole story. I imagine she was getting or about to be hounded by her co-workers and the media. And we don't know what really went down at the hospital and whether she *would have* eventually gotten into trouble (the hospital can say whatever they want about it after the fact), not to mention she was probably terrified of the royals. It was a big blunder and it's a lot of pressure. So she was definitely unstable, but I don't think it's fair to say "nothing was going to happen to her" because we don't know that.
Aw Whamo,
Don't get mad at her like that. Cmon...this might have not even been a contributing factor, and even if it was, it was one of a gazillion things running through her mind. Maybe she wasn't even thinking about it when she made her decision.
ETA and even if she was, she had a sickness.

It just doesn't make sense to me when people, say that they couldn't have predicted the outcome...wouldn't it be most logical then, that if you cannot predict the outcome of your pranks, that you should not engage in them?
Certainly, this isn't the first time a "joke" has gone wrong, you can in fact predict that something will go wrong, they just chose not to consider those things. Not being aware of a person's mental state or level of sensitivity is no excuse for your behavior when they react badly to your fucking with them.

Haha, Pushy, it doesn't mean anything as such, just like "F off" doesn't mean literally to "F" off.
I think "piss off" and "bugger off" and "sod off" (common insults in the UK) are far more effective than "F off" which is too common these days to have the same impact. And now I feel bad using dirty words around you.

Considering their previous pranks, which makes this one look like nothing, they should have been fired years ago. Making people think their relatives are bleeding to death and tricking a young girl into confessing a rape on radio for their entertainment? Yeah, these assholes had it coming.
