Mel And Michael Are Officially Out Of A Job

SCA, the company that owns Australia's 2Day FM, has permanently shut down Mel and Michael's radio show, stopped all advertising on 2Day FM and pressed pause on future pranks until further notice. Before Mel Greig and Michael Christian were handed pink slips, they gave an interview to A Current Affair and cried while apologizing to the family of the nurse who committed suicide after their royal prank.

Mel and Michael weren't paid for talking to A Current Affair, apparently. A Current Affair's Tracy Grimshaw asked them how the prank came to be and who was their target. While looking like a pile of pure sad, Mel said that the prank was just supposed to be some silly thing and nothing more. Their awful British accents were supposed to be the target of the prank. Mel thought they'd get the dial tone as soon as the receptionist heard them talking like Fat Bastard. When Nurse Jacintha Saldanha picked up the phone, because the receptionist was away, and immediately transferred the call, Mel and Michael thought they were being sent to a complaints section where all pranksters are sent. They thought every radio host in the world pranked the hospital.

Mel and Michael found out about Nurse Jacintha's death on Saturday morning and said they think of her family every single second of the day. They both said several times during the interview that even the Florida psychic who Lindsay Lohan punched couldn't have predicted that their dumb prank would've ended like this. As Mel broke down, she said this:

"There’s not a minute that goes by where we don’t think about her family and what they must be going through and the thought we may have played a part in that is gutwrenching. These prank calls are made every day, on every radio station, in every country around the world and they have been for a long time and no-one could’ve imagined this to happen."

They both played dumb when Tracy asked them about the usual protocol of their prank calls. Mel and Michael said that they're just simple pranking puppets. They do the pre-recorded prank and pass it off to whoever, and whatever happens after that is beyond their control. Since there's really no HIPAA laws in Britain, SCA says that they didn't do anything illegal, but are still cooperating with the investigation. SCA's legal department reviewed the prank before it went to air. This isn't the first prank that got 2Day FM into trouble.

As everyone has said before, this is the only time in history when I actually want to see Ashton Kutcher's face. I really wish Nurse Jacintha was still alive and that the hospital was pranking Mel and Michael back. I watched that interview waiting for Ashton to jump out and shout, "You've been PUNK'D!"

And since I am a superficial piece of trash and whatever brain cells I have left live in my ass lips, I did think to myself, "That Michael Christian dude is kind of hot."

While it isn't the DJ's fault she killed herself they unknowingly gave her the extra push over the edge that she was already on. They will feel like shit for the rest of their lives, that is punishment enough.

Hopefully this will be a lesson to the radion station and they will clean up their act.

I agree with some of the posts here. For someone to kill themselves, and thus leaving her children without a mother, over being embarassed by a silly prank, leaves me to believe she had more issues going on than this. Ridiculous to think that her life had gotten so unbearable in that short span of time, that she decided suicide was the answer!

They got fired from their jobs, good and done. That the station gave the go ahead to air the taped conversation after review will give the grieving family some legal recourse, also good.

What bugs the shit out of me is society seems to have gone too far. It's okay now for someone to say any gotdamn thing they want, trash anyone, wish evil things upon them, take things out of context to spread outrageous claims against them, almost without fear of any serious consequences. We have a niche industry where people are professionally mean, purposeful rabble rousers, propagandists with specific agendas.

Only in extreme circumstances is there some backlash against these people, otherwise it's a free for all. We forget there's people on the other end of these diatribes, pranks and criticisms. If something bad happens then it's the victim's fault, they should lighten up already, it's all in fun.

It ain't fun, that's bullshit.

I don't understand why the nurse killed herself....

We live in a society where business executives routinely run businesses into the ground some of these businesses are a hundred years or older. costing tens and hundreds of thousands of people their jobs and pensions

And instead of showing regret or remorse the last act these executives do before locking the doors on these companies is to give themselves bonuses up into the hundreds of millions dollars ranges

And this poor woman kills herself because she almost transferred a harmless prank call

Why did she kill herself?

I just don't get it

All this tragedy over a useless person's pregnancy. Seriously, who cares about Kate Middleton's baby? It's the 21st century. I must be PMSing today, because everything's pissing me off!

Time for a cheeseburger.

Someone who was inconsolably depressed and saw no other alternative. Depression and suicidal thoughts aren't rational, they don't look ahead and see that things will get better. They don't tell you that you need to live for your children, they tell you that your kids will be better off without you, that you're a horrible person and that everything about you will make their lives worse. You don't think about how your death will affect them or the mechanics of death, like finding your body or arranging your funeral. You think about being done hating yourself, having everyone hate you, being a burden and ruining people's lives.

That's what depression is. For someone who was already depressed, it wouldn't mean shit if her boss said, "don't worry about it, we support you." She would hear that as, "you screwed up and we won't forget it but you can stay." She heard the headlines, saw the news, listened to her voice on the tape and didn't think, "next month, it'll be gone." She thought it would be there forever.

That's what depression does. It's easy to say she should have gotten help or someone should have seen how bad she was. I've been there, I've hidden it from everyone, even when I've lived with people. I've cut, I've written suicide letters so many times, I've written a dozen wills and I've physically gathered what I needed to commit suicide and no one knew it. I may do it again tomorrow because I'm on a downswing again. I don't blame her at all because I understand. I pity her and I feel enormously sad for her family though.

I'm sorry this was so long and everyone who finished it gets a virtual cookie.

Who the fuck commits suicide when they wern't even in shit in the first place? The hospital stood beside that receptionist and yet having her OWN children she sees fit to commit SUICIDE!? I think the better question is WHY THE FUCK did she feel compelled to take her own life? This lady wasn't right in the head if this was the only excuse she needed to off herself. I'm sorry she left kids behind because.. whaaaa.. people are mad at me...waaa..people are saying I was a fool to be fooled, so what and you were! Society has the memory of a fucking gnat and in two weeks no one would have even been talking about this.

I understand that humiliation can push someone who is already on the edge, and this sounds like the same type of story published every other week in the US where a kid is taunted and teased one too many times and takes their own life. Only in this case, the ones doing the teasing are adults instead of kids.I feel bad for the woman's family because I understand how it feels to be emotionally fragile. I am not saying anything else about it though because Dlisted is really not the place to open up like that.

Are you taking the piss out of us?

This is some bullshit, the woman who took her life was an obvious idiot, sorry but she was. No sympathy for her, just her poor family . The DJ's did no wrong.

Don't start none and they'll be none.

Look Ma! No hands!!

Totally agree. That dude is kinda hot. In a Chayenne kinda way. I loike!

The DJs totally don't deserve this. It's irresponsible for the nurse to off herself. Didn't she even think of her family? Sheez.

Good. Assholes. I bet they're secretly loving all this attention.

the nurse's family could sue the station or the DJ's. Everybody is at fault though imo

Interesting that no one knew this woman's name or gave a teaming shit what she looked like. If she hadn't killed herself this would've been old news after 48 hours. British press may have question ed HOW they got so far and attention would've turned to the Royal household's security and the hospital.

So who hounded the woman after the event? The DJs? No fuck it was the British press. Lets be honest, if the News of the World were still alive they would've posed as a nurse just to get a pic of Kate riding the porcelain bus and all of us would've Google searched it like we did the pics of Kate's vag.

Fuck Daily Mail and all who fucking believe what they read in it...imbecilic cunts.

Oh and while I'm on a "fuckin hypocrites of UK" ... Diana died cause dumb bitch didn't wear a seat belt. *middle finger*

"We wanted to be hung up on" ???

Fuck off. Nobody who makes a prank phone call wants to be hung up on. They want to string the other person along, at least get some kind of reaction BEFORE they get hung up on.

There's no HIPAA equivalent in the UK? Over here that shit would be highly illegal.

Nope, which makes the whole thing even more stupid. Initially there was talk of high treason, ffs, so as a Brit, all I can do is facepalm at the whole thing whilst side-eyeing the radio station's lawyers for permitting it to air.

The nurse was humiliated and mocked on a global level. Still, I do feel she probably was suffering from depression prior to this incident.
She didn't even do anything other than patch the call through. These two had no idea this tragedy would happen. They will have remorse forever.

Pushy, unlike some on here, does not enjoy pranks.
Not little ones not big ones. I just find no humor in them. Give me a good dirty joke or fart joke anyday.
I was just recently pranked on Hollween by a 42 year old neighbor. He thought he was hilarious.
My BP went sky high. I wish I could have smacked him upside the head. Not funny.

I feel for the woman's family. Somethg had to be way off with this woman. The DJs don't deserve any of this shit. PUNKED had pranks that were actually way more embarrassing, this was harmless. That nurse was obviously some kind of nut. Direct all anger towards the selfish and suicidal.

I've already expressed my opinions about this mess, so I will not reiterate.

I wish others would follow this lead instead of reposting what they've already posted 50,000 times already in the other threads about this.

But I already know where this thread is going.

There was some legal analyst on television last night talking about the applicable laws here. They actually could be charged with something.

According to this person (and one other this morning), it was illegal for them to record the other person without their consent and based on the court's interpretation of what their motives were and what their history was, they could get up to 5 years in prison. They've also opened themselves up to a civil lawsuit for the nurse's death if the family thinks what they did contributed to it (not caused it, but was a contributing factor) and they can show that the DJs and station would have been reasonably aware that they would be exposing her to extreme ridicule with an illegally recorded conversation.

They were really, really stupid. Responsible for her death? Not totally. But I still think they had at least a tiny bit to do with the cascade of events that finally pushed an already troubled woman over the edge.

I feel for the nurse's family, i really do. That said, the DJs should not feel so bad or be treated so bad. This woman obviously had mental problems. She wasn't fired or even reprimanded and she took her life over a prank. I am not going to blame these DJs who were jsut trying to make people laugh for soemthing that an obviously very ill person did.

Its sad that this resulted in a death but the DJs are getting 100% of the blame and they shouldn't be. This prank was not "truly appalling" but maybe "extremely foolish".
