Huell Howser never made sense to me but he made for addictive TV. All he did was smile, ask inane questions, and make empty affirmations. Most of the stuff he filmed was stuff most residents have seen or visited--a lot.

It's too much to get into here, but speaking as a black woman a lot of black women's experience is tied to our hair. It's as much a part of our identity as the color of our skin. So, walking around with your hair looking a hot mess and not getting your hair did is a MAJOR FAUX PAS. That being said, I personally don't see anything wrong with Heidi's daughter's hair. On the other hand, textured hair can be fragile, so a lot of black girs weren't allwed to wear their hair 'loose', because it tangles easily and can break off. My mother never let me wear my hair loose excet on Sundays. I was not as rigid with my daughter, though.

I think a big issue is that sometimes people do not knw how to care for curly/textured hair. I mean, I wanted to slap the shit out of Angelina for letting Zahara go around like she used to. At any rate, it's been a crappy Monday, so I don't have a lot of energy for controversy--I am skipping around this gingerly :)

Thanks for commenting. I think women in general are pretty into their hair. Whether Black women are more into it is up for debate. Though I do think there's societal pressure for women with African-like hair to do something with it rather than leave it as it naturally grows--which must be incredibly expensive. My pet peeve is that if ever a non-African woman is seen with a kid that has some African heritage the hair comment almost always comes up and like you said, in this case it doesn't even seem like an issue. I guess I just see some of this in the future for me (my husband is from Nigeria, our kids will likely have more African-like hair) and it's irritating. I also resent that people will refer to my kids as African American even though they will only be half African American (reference point: Obama) but that's a whole other issue.

Sarah - I didn't interpret it that way, but fair enough. You don't like her and her work doesn't connect with you. I feel differently and that's OK.

While I think criticism of her work on the merits of said work is fair game, I think dinging her for her body/looks is weak. I'm also uncomfortable when people slag on her 'privilege', and I say this as a person who was raised working-class by two twits who would spend $5 dollars if they were given $2 and then turn to their kids to make up the difference. While her money may have (likely/definitely) given her a leg up, it hardly negates her work, which seems to be the argument of some her critics. In my humble opinion, that is bullshit.

I will say that I think her comment about not writing for money is straight up stupid, though. No argument there. Otherwise, we'll just have to agree to disagree regarding her.

Cashew - Thanks. I know what you mean about the access, too. There are plenty of other talented, not characteristically "beautiful" actresses, but because of her connections, she's given this show and praised as this genius. Also, it's not just her, it's Mamet's daughter, too. Brian Williams daughter is attractive, but again, nepotism.

I don't think Lena Dunham is ugly, but she's got some serious Mary Lou Retton going on with that haircut. Zosia gets a +1 for having a cool name, but -1 for looking scary as fuck half the time...so it evens out.

I've never seen Girls, but seems like the kind of self-deprecating hipster bullshit people grow out of once they hit 30.

Despite fighting the 'Girls' hype, I caved and watched it. Before giving 'Girls' a chance, I hated Lena Dunham on site - no real reason, I just found her face irritating. I changed my opinion after giving her show a chance. I think she's genuinely talented, although I can understand why she may not be for everyone.

As for her India comment, I only know two people who have been to India and both of them said the poverty was soul crushing. One of them works for an adventure travel company and has been to Thailand, Vietnam and most of the 'Stans (Uzbekistan, etc) so she's not exactly afraid of roughing it.

Cashew - Awww. I usually agree with your opinions, but on this one, I respectfully disagree :). I think that you put forth a lot of well-thought out comments as to why you think she's great, though. Most of the praise that I've read about her is just that "she's a genius...because...she just is..." or, "I can totally relate to her, that's exactly how I was at that age, etc...". I just don't get it.

I think that I may be able to look past the crappy show if she didn't make shitty comments in real life interviews outside of the show. I like a lot of actors/characters on shows but don't think that I would like them as a person (one example - Claire Danes on Homeland - LOVE, Claire Danes as a person/soundbites from her interviews - can't stand!). This is a situation where I'm not crazy about her show, the obvious nepotism, the constant praise that she gets combined with her interviews/soundbites.

Does Claire Danes actually think she's a working mother like any typical working mother?

I think Mohemet is cute and Lena is too (her body doesn't bother mel), and I like that she hires Jewish looking girls for her show. When people complain about lack of diversity, they don't realize that not many shows put girls who look Jewish in such a marked way on the map. The nepotism and ease with which she received her career does bother me though. As for the nudity on the show, I also like it. I like seeing a real body.

Creepy Claire Danes...

I don't know about Lena in real life becuase she says some pretty clueless shit (do writing not for the money? ho, please!), but she is talented and there are so many hard-hitting moments in that show. But "Tiny Furniture" was unbearable and I had to turn it off after 40 minutes; I don't fault rich kids for being rich, but I don't like a lot of them either lol. I do make effort to look past her privilege to the writing, though her character bothers me and isn't realistic for today. When I was 22 ish I worked full time retail while being an intern while writing creatively, only to be laid off two years later from a shit job I had to stick with. Her character quits coffeeshop jobs after 2 days and mooches off of her rich friends and struggles with writing despite not writing (?). Maybe season 2 is better, and I did buy HBO specifically for season 1, but after BE, I cancelled and will wait for the DVD.

Stoney-She's 27. In the show she's young, but IRL she comes across as pretty mature.

Hekki -- Lena Dunham & Zosia Mamet only have jobs because of obscene nepotism. Otherwise they'd be kicked out because of their ugliness.

miz cynical -- yes, Mr. Hamm DID praise Lena Dunahm in the December 7 issue of Entertainment Weekly; I wanted to barf. I would normally say "who did she blow?" but no one would want it from her. Hekki - I couldn't get into Girls, either. I'm only a few years older than Lena and I can't relate. I didn't grow up with her entitled ass, angsty - upbringing. I read some recap back when the show was on about a story line where she stole the maid's tip money from the hotel room and commenters were trying to conjure up some reason why that behavior was justifiable (waaaah, she's 26, unemployed and her parents wouldn't give her money, etc.), then I watched the episode and it was more disgraceful actually seeing it in action. I can't imagine stealing someone's tip money! And it wasn't done in a hilarious way, either! It was like, fuck, my parents aren't supporting my ass, so I'm going to steal someone else's livelihood. Not funny, bitch. Just complete lack of self-awareness.
