I definitely look like my dad. In fact, I look more like his sister than her kids did. However, when I'm with my mom's side, people say they can tell we are kin. My brother looks like my mom. However, he got my dad's nose. The funny thing is, my brother and I are 8 years apart, but if you look at our baby pictures, we look like twins. The difference is he had more hair and I was a bit lighter.

What's even funnier is that my daughter and the son of one of my ousin's on my mom's side look EXACTLY alike! It is uncanny. I wish I had been more sciency in school. Genetics is fascinating to me.

Because I am diabetic and have a lot of problems related to too much estrogen. I was a pretty heavy carb eater until became diabetic 3 years ago. I am still veg, but I have learned to incorporate a lot more leafy greens in my diet. I won't go back to eating meat (I'm deathly allergic to seafood, so that rules that out), but I try to be a litte bit more conscious of what and how I eat.

I've read that most babies are born looking like their fathers and that the evolutionary explanation for this is to affirm the child's paternity in the father's mind. When I read that I thought "bullshit!" but I have noticed this phenomenon to a certain extent where I have seen newborn babies and know how both parents look. Newborn babies are mostly kept indoors due to the exhaustion of the mothers and babies change very rapidly so I do realize that I can't speak for every baby I've ever met. My son was born looking exactly like me but his father said he looked exactly like him as a baby, and I must admit he didn't look like my baby pictures. However, everybody said he looked exactly like me, so... (and he has pretty much stayed that way).

This evolutionary theory would also help explain your observations, Blue Orchid. My older sister has my father's facial features and hair texture (thick and wavy) but my mother's coloring (brown hair and eyes). I don't think I look like either one of my parents except I got my father's blue eyes (he is Black Irish. Black hair, blue eyes, and skin that turns very brown in the sun). My younger sister seemed to take after the Native American traits passed down from our maternal grandfather. But I'll tell you what - I think there is a psychological component to this also. My son is on a year-round swim team and his grandfather has noticed the exact same thing as TexnDoc when he has come to the meets: at first he mentioned how much all of the kids looked so much like their mothers when he watched them walk around together. Then he modified that into sons looking more like their mothers and daughters looking more like their dads. Just generally.

Some people think I look just like my dad, others think I look more like my mom. Some think me and my siblings look alike, others wouldn't know we were related. It's what different people look for and what they're trained to see, I guess. With men in particular, many think their looks would be abominations on a little girl and are pleasantly surprised when their daughters come out looking relatively decent despite having quite a few of daddy's physical features. Men may also look at their sons as little mirrors and are somewhat surprised to see so much of mommy in them. Maybe?

And look I totally am with you on the skin looking lighter/darker during some times of the year. I have the same kind of skin. Even though I live in a place that's hot a lot of the times, during the "winter" months, I get really pale. During summer,even if I get a sunburn, my skin turns a really nice olive color.

I don't know how common it is, but I have heard girls commenting on lightening their skin, what works, what doesn't. (This is while I am working, not just strolling around outside eavesdropping.) This has happened more than five times since the beginning of the year, but I will admit that most of these girls are under the ages of 18.

Does anyone work in the cosmetic industry? Can someone comment about how common it is that someone requests/purchases a product that does that?

Regarding Beyonce, I don't know what the hell she's doing either way (I don't care. I don't like her.) Whether it's different lighting, photoshop, skin lightening products; I just wish that it were more mainstream for women to showcase their natural hair/skin color proudly like Rhonda Lee.
