Cage Fight!
Grab the oil, bikini thongs and Ben Gay! Clint Eastwood and Spike Lee are about to cage fight. Spike Lee recently criticized Clint for not including one African-American soldier in two of his war movies, "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwa Gima."
While promoting his own war film, "Miracle St. Anna," Spike told reporters, "Clint Eastwood made two films about Iwo Jima that ran for more than four hours total, and there was not one Negro actor on the screen. If you reporters had any balls you'd ask him why. There's no way I know why he did that ... But I know it was pointed out to him and that he could have changed it. It's not like he didn't know."
And what did Clint's hot pepaw ass have to say about this? "The story is Flags of Our Fathers, the famous flag-raising picture, and they didn't do that. If I go ahead and put an African-American actor in there, people'd go: 'This guy's lost his mind.' I mean, it's not accurate. A guy like him should shut his face." SHUT HIS FACE?! Hurry, get the cage! The fight is upon us.
Clint went on to tell the Guardian, "I'm playing it the way I read it historically, and that's the way it is. When I do a movie and it's 90% black, like Bird, then I use 90% black people. He was complaining when I did Bird. Why would a white guy be doing that? I was the only guy who made it, that's why. He could have gone ahead and made it. Instead he was making something else."
Damn! Clint sounds mad. I can almost hear his dentures chattering in anger. Once again, the only way to settle this is with a oil cage fight. It's the only way! My dollars are on Clint. He's one feisty pepaw.
Spike will do anything to keep his unimportant name in the news. Unfortunately for him, his time has passed. Fortunately for us, it has.
While Clint is racking up Oscars and Oscar nods, Spike Lee is bitching about things we should be able to put behind us.
How does he KNOW it was pointed out for him? Sounds like he was watching those movies looking for a way to consider it racist. Jealousy!

I'm sorry, but yes, they did. The newsreel journalists that took the iconic photographs that make up the premise of Eastwood's film did turn their lenses away from black soldiers serving there. SUCH WERE THOSE TIMES. The military did not start desegregation until 1948, and it wasn't completely desegregated until 1953. THAT'S HOW IT WAS. Google it, and read up on the Truman Act.

I'm team Clint on this one though, when you are doing a historic film, there is no room for political correctness! yes there where african americans who fought during world war II, but lets not forget, the army was still SEGREGATED at that time, and if you're going to do a movie based on history, it needs to be portrayed ACCURATLY. I am not condoning segragation, so please don't start bitching and calling me a racist for pointing out a historical fact! And Clint did address the fact that there was a native american who helped raised that flag, and the predjudices he faced back at home despite being a hero, so Spike should stop picking fights over stuff that has no need for it!

Hey, you know what? Spike's a director and filmmaker. He's perfectly free to shoot his own Iwo Jima film and populate it with whomever he chooses.
oh, and movies like that should be historically accurate, because lets face it, most people's understanding of history is seeped in movies only. For many, Speilberg's version of the holocaust is THE Holocaust narrative, despite being riddled with numerous flaws, distortions, and flat out lies.

From a historical standpoint, there were african amercian soldiers who fought on Iwo Jima. To not have them in battle scenes is not only historically inaccurate, but its also pretty shitty. Its like when Ken Burns failed to include a single Mexican in his epic WWII biopic--and was met with a shitload of protest. Not including them reaffirms they are not american, and they were (and are) not willing to fight and die for this country. It makes it easier to segregate as not "real" americans. Mexicans joined and served in the millitary, four winning the Medal of Honor, even though they weren't necessarily citizens.

Clint's been a bit pissy about this, but his first riposte to Lee's charges was the best: read your damn history books, Spike. If he had, Lee would have known that the US Army was segregated until the Korean War, and that outside of a few soldiers doing requisitions or something, there were NO African-American soldiers on Iwo Jima AT ALL. Ergo, none of them helped raise the flag. Why would Eastwood rewrite history just to be PC and make nutters like Lee happy?
Eastwood had no problems telling the story of the American Indian soldier who helped raise the flag there, nor telling the stories of the Japanese soldiers who fought there, so the charges of racism are unfounded. And anyway, why bring it up now? Isn't Eastwood's movie like 2 years old?
Lee *should* do his own damn movie about African-American heroes in WWII - how about one about the black cook who grabbed a machine gun and shot down Japanese bombers during the attack on Pearl Harbor? Now that's a true, historically accurate story, one that deserves a film.
I find those first two sentences and the concept that goes along with them quite disturbing ... thanks for making my morning.
Do you really think this happened to the military personnel records? Were black men photoshopped out of the iconic photo?
(trivia note, the photo was a re-enactment, but it used the same men as the original. Most of those men died during the battle.)

Well considering most "Written Historical Accounts" omitted the involvement of certain men and women from ethnic backgrounds other than Caucasian, then Clint is reflecting the history he knows and has read.

ahahaha I have NEVER in my life been accused as a U.S promotor, so this is new. My grandparents would probably do the "mashed potato" in their graves at the very thought! I am currently at my house in Hong Kong, with a home in London in my beloved country England where I was born and raised, keep businesses and a home in NYC and travel 38 weeks of the year with each week being in a different country. So I spend some time in the U.S/around the world and meet a world of both good and bad people (to give you an idea of the people I am speaking of). I still find many moments on many days where I turn the air blue, usually starts with something along the lines of "fucking Yanks....." but as my father once said, "if we were all the same, the world would be a very boring place indeed."
If I had to choose, I would be back home roaming the streets of Kensington without hesitation. But alas.. even the land I love is going down the toilet. I have always found the U.S to be very aggressive place but there are brilliant moments where people show you such humility it warms the heart to no end. I am fortunate enough to have the option of not spending my life in one country, so I travel between where I want to be and where I need to be.
I was was simply stating the fact that the U.S is seen by MANY(not all) as a place to succeed and perhaps start again. I personally am not a big fan of the place for many of the issues MANY (but not all) people cannot seem to get over. I used the word EVERYONE because it's fair to say that the U.S, despite the many problems it does have, can be a very nice place to spend time indeed. There are great characters that live there and Especially for people coming from a country with perhaps not as many opportunities to "make it".
It's almost 1am here with a pissy day of non-stop rain buggering up plans and I've heard a "race remark" conversation for the 100th time this week! Being the owner of a nice complexion due to a rather tasty mix of English, Brazilian, Chinese and West Indian, just about every blasted Obama question, whilst I am here, has rather indiscreetly put on my plate to answer. Answering "no idea mate" hasn't been cutting the mustard.

not EVERYONE wants to live in US.. despite how high and mighty you like to think US is. i know some people who have given up green cards their family had applied for them when they were young... and most people i know are simply not interested in moving there. yes there are a handful who do want to work for a while in US, but they are people who have a lust to experience different cultures and america only happens to be one of them, no one YEARNS to live in US specifically that I know of...

BTW...the American soldiers on Iwo Jima were overwhelmingly white.ALL the soldiers that raised the flag were White.There may have been a handful of black soldiers in support roles.The Army was segregated throughout WW2...Most of the Black units fought in Europe & northern Africa.

the fact someone is different is something many people CANNOT seem to handle at all! But a united country isn't what the various governments want. Division is a tool used by those who seek to gain from it. Now people ACTIVELY LOOK for differences to discriminate against their fellow brother. If it isn't colour(the most obvious) it's culture, then class, then appearance... it's like being back at school.
