I'm also surprised people are still taken aback by such things.. I guess that's why we need to see more of this kind of article; To desensitize the very sensitive and squeamish folk out there who dismiss this couple as feaks.
Also, some people here seem to have trouble with some definitions. Gender does not refer to biology. It refers the masculine or feminine role one takes in society. Thomas is pregnant, and yeah, that tends to be a female kinda thing to do. But, afterwards, Thomas is going to feel just as male as he did before he got preggers.
The point is, sex is biology. gender is social or cultural role. While Thomas may never become completely male, biologically, what's more important is that he can be a man for himself, his wife and be perceived as such by the general public that he meets in day to day life who most likely don't consider what he's got in his underpants (at least, not while he's pregnant).

If you look at the article ‘his’- I am not being rude, I just don’t see how you can be a man with a womb- mother committed suicide. So, already issues writ large and I wonder what she is acting out.
What I also fail to grasp is how having your breasts removed and taking hormones but keeping your vagina and womb makes you a man. If I had a mastectomy would I be legally a man in the US? I also have some worries about sex changes- when you read accounts it always seems to be that the person didn’t fit the stereotype of a man or woman and felt they needed radical surgery to makes the outside match the inside- maybe if we had a more flexible attitude to what being a man or woman was we wouldn’t need all this, After all, as Gloria Steinham said- if the shoe doesn’t fit, change the shoe, don’t cut your toes off.
Overall I feel sorry for the baby but plenty even more fucked up people have kids every day and most people are OK. If they get over their Brangelina stylee love of over sharing they might be OK. Let’s hope so.

You know I would tend to agree with this, except that the only reason "he" kept "his" womb is that "his" S.O. was infertile when they decided to wed. Really, it was a decision of practicality - they knew they'd want kids at some point.
I'm more concerned that they believe that whoring out this ridiculous story is a good idea...
Maybe they think they're brave; maybe they understand that they're children will have to be brave and are giving them a head start or MAYBE (which I'm a little more inclined to believe, at this point) they think that Jerry Springer is high art. And THOSE kinda people should definitely NOT aspire to parenthood, IMO.
PS. I'm shocked how many people are still put off by this kinda thing...I guess I was lucky enuff to grow up with kids with gay and transgendered parents. To be honest, they seemed a little fed-up in general, - weary of the constant questioning and oggling - but otherwise are quite fine socially...I can't say how they all ended up but I know do that one of them (borne of a lesbo and raised mostly by 2 gay dads) was absolutely not confused about his sexuality in the slightest;)

well for my two cents i think i would refer to "him" as a "her" durring the pregnancy and then revert to the male address after the delivery...i don't necessarily think the child will have a more difficult upbringing because of his/her birth circumstances, i just think the parents will have to work extra hard and be more dilligent and proactive regarding explaining those circumstances to the child...
semi-off topic: i have a friend who was artificially inseminated twice when she was with her partner (female) of 7 years...my friend's partner then decided shortly after the second pregnancy that she didn't want a larger family and sued for partial custody of only the ONE child (and won)...so now my friend is a single parent to the youngest and shares partial custody of the oldest son...she has to somehow come up with an explanation for her youngest as to why his other "mommy" doesn't want him! i think children are born into difficult situations ALL THE TIME and the responsibility lies with the parents to smooth the way...will it be easy? probably not (especially with all of the publicity) but perhaps they think with the publicity will come more acceptance and tolarence for their situation....i don't know...it's not really the road i would have traveled, but im not them!

Maybe I missed it somewhere along the way, but why didn't the wife carry the child? Is she unable to? Sorry folks, but this is nothing short of a freak show. It has nothing to do with being intolerant since I used to live in San Francisco and work within the fashion industry years ago. There is something very wrong with this whole deal and those who cannot see what a horrible effect this will have on the child that is born into this family are in denial.

I work in mental health and discussed this situation with one of the psychiatrists I work with; her professional opinion was that this person still suffers from some MAJOR gender identity disorder. Men don't have babies- end of story. You can't have it both ways and yet want the world to see you and accept you as a man. I can't even imagine what kind of trauma this is going to cause their poor child. I really think it's selfish. Why not adopt if you want kids? Men don't have uteruses; why would you keep yours? The whole story is just very bizarre and twisted; no wonder why foreigners think the US is going to hell in a handbasket...

Exactly. If you changed your gender, you're now a dude. If you want to be a dude, but keep your functioning reproductive system and use it, you're still thinking and feeling like a female.
