I think you'd have to know what, exactly, celebrities represent on a personal level.
Celebrities are really just the same as the old Gods. They are powerful and exempt from the mundane trials of living and they are flawed. They are not like us and just like us at the same time. They get to skip over the boring parts.
The old Gods, from their seats on high, represented character traits, values and philosophies that existed in the collective consciousness. Today, we have celebrities for that.
That representation can allow people to examine parts of themselves and their societies that are too hard to face fully on a personal level. I think you'll find that the more upset a person gets over a celebrity, the more likely it is that the situation mirrors a personal experience...and moreso if they are hurt by someone's (including their own) participation in that experience.
