The urge is there. The curiosity is there. I think that kids are not prepared in this society because we don't prepare them. We spend a whole lotta time on the three Rs and on telling them what not to do but not a whole lot on building self-awareness, empathy and an actual sense of responsibility (which means guiding rather than demanding, which means being present which is hard for a lot of people who are constantly dealing with survival stress - this includes "keeping up with the Jonses").

That doesn't mean to say that they're necessarily ready to have children (I say "necessarily" because I know of people - but they weren't raised here - who started young and are operating quite well in North American society today. On a personal level, the jury's still out.) But they are definitely ready to be sexual. They just need to be responsible about it. Learning how to be physically responsible requires emotional responsibility first.

My grandparents and their friends were generally in their 20's before they started having kids - but I'm not surprised that people in some states of America were having their first child at 13 (and still are).

Just because you get your period at 12 doesn't mean you're ready for sex - aside from the obvious emotional maturity issues, you're body still isn't ready. In the middle ages when some girls were married at 12 and whilst many of them were able to fall pregnant but they died as their bodies couldn't handle pregnancy or childbirth. Just looking at the size of a 12 year old's hips should tell you that.

But emotionally we aren't. We know a lot more about the human psyche than we did then, and most of us know that having sex too soon messes up kids emotionally. Physically they may be ready, but it takes YEARS for hearts and minds to catch up.

Back in those days infant mortality was high, so they had to hurry up and start breeding. That's no longer the case today.

Some kids may experiment with sexuality, but that is a far cry from being ready for a sexual relationship with an adult. No way will the balance of power be anywhere near equal in that case. Of course, years ago, they didn't worry much about equality. But I don't think anyone really wants to go back to those days.

I see it all the time on older teens, tho...Maybe our experiences are different...maybe it's cuz it gets cold here, who knows?

And I wouldn't even begin to think of letting my daughter mess around on the net without knowing what she was up to. As she gets older she can expect a certain amount of privacy with a friend, but never with a stranger. Quite frankly, I think she'd be offended if I showed so little interest in her life.

On an interesting note, in the 20's and thirties in many states, it wa a.o.k. that older men courted girls at the tender age of 13. Heck, both my grandmas were married and pregnant with their first at this age. So it isnt unfeasible that an older man wouldn't want to have sex with a 14 year old.

No, I'm not suggesting that children, or anyone else, are asking to be victims of sexual violence because they dress provocatively. I'm not suggesting that young girls should not be able to express themselves and wear clothing that is trendy and what their peers are wearing. Sad fact is, we can control our children, not all of the sick bastards on the planet. Letting my daughter wear short shorts with her ass hanging out just isn't worth the risk. A man may be looking at what he believes is a sexually mature legal individual, because of their mannerisms and clothing, who isn't. Cases of abduction, or even this case where he knew in advance is completely different.

I agree with Audrey's blanket statement, which I assume is in response to what some other's have mentioned, i.e. my space ho's, etc.

We're on the same side, protecting the innocent. We're just looking at it from different angles. I agree, we should be focusing on catching the perpetrators, but there's always a first time and unfortunately, many are repeat offenders before they are ever caught if they're caught. A child is never completely safe. I'm just suggesting, boundaries need to be set that many parents don't. I don't want that to be a lesson any child learns AS a victim.

OT: Funny story,

When me and my boyfriend moved into our townhome, someone called the cops on us because my oldest daughter, who was two at the time, wouldnt stop crying or kicking the walls.

They questioned my BF and wouldnt leave until they saw that we hadnt beat the crap outta her. It was after they left that we realized he was wearing a "worlds greatest dad t-shirt". We still laugh about it to this day!

I agree with you simply because more than a few 13/14 year old girls are sexually active with their peers and that alone should encourage parents to teach their daughters to dress and behave properly, and the possible repercussions of dressing more provocatively. It draws not only wanted attention but unwanted attention. If a man is walking behind a girl in a short skirt, he's going to look. He's not going to know her age until he sees the flipside. I agree with what you said to some extent. I think the pedophiles in question ARE absolutely still responsible for what they did/do to minors regardless of what the kids wear. However, that does not mean that the shorter shorts or skirts are not more inviting to sexual thoughts than, let's say, jeans and a t-shirt.

By implying that it's ok for girls to simply wear a little more provacative clothing, but not be held responsible for the message they are putting out there, regardless of their age, is irresponible in itself. That is not to say that the pedophiles are right in being attracted to young girls, but just that they are more likely to be attracted to someone who seems (in all dress and mannerisms), more sexually willing. If the girls are asking for more "attention" from their peers by dressing more provacatively, then it is no wonder that teen pregnancy rates are so high.

I guess that the bottom line to my arguement is that BOTH parties (the abducted and the abductee) should be held responsible if the abducted was of the age of sexual consent and "put it out there," per se. I DO NOT mean that young children are responsible if they are sexually assaulted, molested, or abused. It's the slutty teens I'm referring to whose parents are either too naive to think their baby is wrong in any way, or the parents who just don't give two shits about their kids' upbringing.
