Julia Child Was A Super Spy!

In a report out today, Julia Child has been named as one of the 24,000 people who worked as a covert agent for the OSS during World War II. You know Julia Child beat the schnitzel out of a few Nazis and then made them a delicious roasted chicken dinner afterwards.
The Guardian has the details:
Child was one of more than 24,000 covert agents working on behalf of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), a second world war-era precursor to the CIA. Her fellow spies included professional baseball player Moe Berg, US supreme court justice Arthur Goldberg and Miles Copeland, the father of The Police drummer Stewart Copeland.In new records released today by the US national archives, Child admitted she left a previous job in furniture advertising after personality conflicts with her employers.
"I made a tactical error and was out," the French-cuisine guru wrote in her OSS application. "However, I learned a lot about advertising and wish I had been older and more experienced so that I could have handled the situation, as it was a most interesting position."
Child, who died four years ago this week at age 91, applied for the spying post years before marrying Paul Cushing Child and opening her storied French cooking school, L'Ecole des Trois Gourmandes.
I bet you Julia's signature voice isn't real! Her real voice is probably sultry and velvety, but she didn't want any of the Nazis to find her out. I love her even more now. Although, I can't fuck with her recipes. I tried to make one of her recipes once and after I took a glance at it, I closed up the book and ordered Chinese. That shit is impossible.

Thanks for the thoughtful and enlightening post. I had a boyfriend way back, and his great aunt was part of the Danish Resistance. She was a remarkable woman.
Years ago I visited friends, (old enough to be my parents), who live in Eton, near Windsor. I went to their local club and talked with their friends who told stories of the Blitz. These people were holed up in the Tube while the bombs dropped. Such courage.

She was doing things like acquiring and passing of information and cracking codes. It was scary and exciting times in Europe back then. No one knew who was really who. Exciting because it was party party paty and affairs affairs affairs because the thinking was that with one bomb dropped by the Germans, it could all be over. The Embassies gave the geatest parties.
The Germans were not playing. What happend to the World Trade Center on 9/11 happend in central London every night for almost 2 years straight. Other cities in Europe suffered the same fate. But people held on to their wits. You can still find machine gun bullet holes on Buckingham palace to this day. The Nazis were out to get every fucking body. To be a covert spy in the middle of this cauldron is something else.
I'll keep the story to myself but lets just say that there was a time when some spies were being found out about and no one knew how. Julia figured out how and suggested someting and less spies were found out because of her suggestion. Cool!

That's why there are like two movies about her life are currently in production. I've got a fabulous true first hand story about something that occured when she was in "on th job" in Europe Facinating stuff, facinating lady. She lived and cooked the truth. Full fat and heavy French comfort food helped her live to her 90's. Love it

Julia's recipes were "old school" and they were so complicated that I don't know how she ever encouraged anyone to attempt 'haute cuisine' but some of her tips were excellent and still valuable today.
I want to be a covert agent.
