That's her. I know it is. I think its highlarious that people think she is a singer. Bitch can't sing. People who can really sing don't need all that other dancing and explosions shit going on to distract from how much they suck. All these fakes do this. Their microphone is turned down really low so nobody can really hear them. What you hear in concert are back up singers (who can actually sing) and prerecorded backing tracks.

I'm really late in replying, NYAPPLES-

but I have to say that Brit used to have a better team writing her songs. "Hit me baby one more time" is considered by many to be an excellent song (catchy, whatever) and she did sing it well.

And thats awesome that you like so much music- I'm in total agreement about trying all kinds and keeping an open mind. You never know where your favorite song is going to come from!

I admit I don't really listen to Britney Spears' music, because I prefer heavy metal and industrial music, but she seems to at least have a personality, and that's admirable in my opinion.

Justin Timberlake's so hell-bent on proving that he's "over Britney" SEVEN YEARS LATER. OK, fine you're over her, Justin, but you'd be more believable if you quit with the passive aggressive remarks that continuously subtly hint at Britney Spears. It was funny for a little bit, but now it's just annoying. I'm sure that whatever she was doing he probably was doing on the side, seeing as he moved on from Spears AWFULLY fast for someone claiming to be so "hurt".

I know what you mean, since his last cd came out justin Timberlake has been buying into his own hype. He even said the grammys or some other show should give him money for bringing their ratings up just cause his stupid ass was on it. He just seems SOOOO into himself its disgusting. Thats one thing I liked about Britney, even when she was on top, she always seemed like a sweet hot girl who lived next door. She never grew any Mariah Carey diva airs to her, and I thought maybe it was a southern thing, since they're very hard working family oriented people. But Justin is also from the south and he is unbelievably arrogant, I dont wish him any ill will, he had some great songs in his last cd, so he should be proud of his accomplishments, but not to forget that it could all just as easily go away. The beegee's were also great writers and singers, and where are they now? Point is, he should learn some humility, even fake it, because publicly he is becoming such a turn of. In some interviews he seemed down to earth, not to long ago, so I dont get where this whole asshole transformation came from.

A lot of people do not have capivating voices and yet have made it big like Madonna and Bono, I think they have very beautiful sounding voices, they cant really sing or captivate by hitting high notes, but its pleasant to hear, like for ex water runninng. The sound of water running is nothing special really, especially compared to the sounds of an orchestra, and yet it is still soothing. So sometimes less is more, is that right?
I dont even know, its getting late and I am falling around as i type. But your right, music in general now a days is in the shitter because music and even supposed "legit" musicians focus more on beats than on lyrics, especiallyy because usually that guarantees a hit, most people dont pay attention to lyrics as long as they can bop their heads. I am of the opinion lyrics are far more important than VOICE or MUSIC. Like the Nashville soundtrack has such beautiful and smart lyrics, that no matter how you sing them, no matter how bad the voice, its still great. NYAPPLES, Justin Timberlake appears to have grown exponentially more arrogant, which makes him very difficult for me to watch, because his behavior and music just screams "smug asshole alert".

The same could be said for Rihanna and Chris Brown. Those two are ridiculous, and while arrogance is hardly ever excusable, at least Justin Timberlake has more knowledge about the industry than either one of them do.

1800's music scene was the shit! seriously, great tunes. I appreciate all forms of music, chamber music, baroque, even todays stuff. I really didnt mean to say you were against pop music, but generally when people say stuff about Britneys music and the term "singer songwriter" comes up, it usually takes a turn in that direction of THAT type of music isnt "serious". But I am sorry, I dont like to put words into other peoples mouthes if thats how it came out. I know what you mean when you say you miss people like whitney. Now a days there arent any great singers, I like Christina Aguilera, but her style of singing generally is rougher than I would like it to be, and she just doesnt have graceful tact in execution. I actually think Britney has a great voice. I know your thinking "what the fuck" but its true I do. Her voice has a bit of a southern twang when she sings, its sexy, and kittenish, it suits her genre of music well, and more importantly than anything her voice is very singular. When you hear her, you know its Britney, she has a sound all her own. At the end of the day all my rants have been about music appreciation. Theres so many genres, and ways to sing, and so many singers, that why try to bring someone down when obviously like in Britneys case she did well for herself, because people liked what she offered, not just the sex appeal, but also the music. Had the music not been good, she would have dissapeared after her first single like the countless amount of Britney imitators that came out after she came on the scene.

I wasn't saying pop music sucks, NYAPPLES- I just don't think Britney Spears has a remarkable voice. However, she did used to be a captivating performer to many.

And I don't respect just singer songwriters- I don't write my own opera, lol- I just miss singers, like Whitney. Most female singers are either singer/songwriters with ok voices, or dancer/singers, with ok voices. Plus, the songwriters out there who write for talent like Whitney's don't seem to exist anymore- more and more, music seems to need a beat.

But what the fuck do I know- I am lost in the 1800's and come out to play in this century only when I really love a song.

Same here, my grandfather was big on Egyptology so after hearing him speak over and over on the topic, I naturally took a liking to it as a child and have read countless books on the Old Kingdom till present day. As far as last years VMA, it was just bad, on all accounts. The VMA's is a awards show that needs performers whom know how to grab the audiences attention, and provide not just a vocally great performance, but an all around great show. NO one did this. I thought MAYBE Justin Timberlake might be able to, he only did a good job for the 1 st minute of his first performance, then it went down hill when he stopped "my love" and went into "sexyback". In his second performance, he did that horrible song with Nelly and Timberland. Justin was trying to act all "cute", but he is just so fucking annoying, and the whole set was so blase that I couldnt believe the state of the show. Rhianna basically stood there and posed. Chris Brown, danced hard, but it was mostly just jumping, and like I said he lip synched well over 97% of his show, AND his songs sound completely synthesized but no one says shit to him. I think its due cause hes a guy and shes a girl. Like Brad Pitt and him driving with Shiloh in his lap, no one basically said shit to him other than that one day then it dissapeared, with Britney cause shes a girl people still dont let that shit go years after. But moving on, the VMA's were once a great great entertainment show, but sadly, after 2003, there have been no real performers to grace the stage, which is why i do hope Britney returns and shows the music world what it means to give a fucking masterclass VMA performance. If she can do one thing, its that.

I didn't even watch the VMA's last year to be honest, so I couldn't even tell you who was on stage other than Britney Spears. They always pull in one interesting person at the beginning of the show, and then the rest is really boring, so that's why I lost hope in the VMAs about twoish years ago.

One time hardly qualifies as a "pattern". MTV and Britney had an amazing thing going with each other, she guaranteed high ratings and a performance that would always land her front cover on newspaper the very next day because it was the best of the night, and in turn they provided her with a stage and millions of viewers for her to showcase her set. It was completely a symbiotic relationship, total win win for both. I agree that MTV is just trying to fit in with whats "hot" and desperately attempting to stay hip and relevant. Unfortunately last years awards was shit, with this whole lets have a few small stages here and there to create a "club" feel, - sorry it looked cheap. A big stage, is far more visual and attractive to the eye, and provides the artist with space to get creative. Last years DEBACLE was Britney, her camp, and MTV's fault. MTV gave her rehearsal time and everything, and promoted heavily her big comeback, which is a great thing for any artist trying to establish themselves again being able to do it in front of so many people, it should have been a great night to remember. But that it was not. I'll never forget after she finished her opening set, on dlisted, you couldnt even fucking read your post, people were posting nonstop about her, it literally went over a thousand posts within an hour and a half. Its for THAT reason MTV wants Britney, cause whether people like her or not, a star will always attract people, whether because they hate her or love her, but point is they will watch and give the star their own time. Thats the difference between great singers whom never made it, and those people who did make, those who did were people whom the average person would give thier time to. Even last years awards, I felt Britney gave a better show than all the twats that performed, Alicia Keys did her thing but its the same boring thing she always does, and that MJ wanna be Chris Brown sucked hard, he lip sank his set but like one note and no one said a word. Rhianna was OKAY at best also, she just has zero stage presence, and cant dance to save her life, which is strange cause I seriously thought she would be a great performer. MTV needs Britney and even Eminem back, both of them knew what it meant to wow the audience, they were more than just singers, dancer, rappers, but they were true showmen. Since both have dissapeared, the VMA's just has no luster, or "wow" performances, its all just one long shitfest after the other.

In case you all missed the blatant pattern in VMAs history, MTV's just in on watching Britney Spears fall flat on her face so they can produce primetime freakshows that they know they'll attract ratings.

And MTV is so fickle. No-one working at MTV necessarilly even likes or cares about Britney Spears, as they know she's vulnerable and an emotional wreck. In short, she's become a joke to MTV.

MTV is like that one friend in the popular clique that no-one cares about and just jumps on the bandwagon to fit in. And MTV is trying to fit in. Like fuck they want this to be successful.

The music industry is so large that everyone should have a piece of the pie. Why must there only be singer/songwriters?? There are so many singer songwriters now, that I think thats the GRAND majority of what plays. Britney provides great pop songs, there fun, catchy, sexy, and they are what they are. With all the different genres out there, why must only singer songwriters get this respect like there so great. John Mayer, Alicia Keys, Natasha Bedingfield, Coldplay are all singer songwriters whom are average at best so just cause u can write and sing doesnt equate into great music. Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston never wrote any of their material, but they were great. There are many songwriters whom are also great like Diane Warren, she doesnt sing, but shes still great at what she does. Britney is great at what she does, which is as a likeable enough singer whom has a distinguishable voice, fun songs, and whom can put on great performances. Even after Britneys '00 performance when they showed the audience, Christina herself was mouth opened taken aback and clapping for that amazing performance. Britney has NEVER marketed herself as a vocal powerhouse in any way, and only an idiot would think shes the next Mariah so shes not duping anybody. When she came out, even little kids knew that bitch was lip syncing when performing live so not sure why its such a big issue.

I think with all the different tastes out there, why shouldnt pop be allowed, along with rock, rap, adult listening, country etc., at the end of the day if you dont like something then dont listen to it. In life, you go through so many moods, sometimes your mad and want to listen to something heavy, or sad and something more emotional, or having a great day and you want an uptempo fun song, and THATS why its important not "limit" what can and cannot be out there. And whats with the Britney vs Christina fights, they had this shit on TRL in '99, it was dumb then and its still dumb now. After close to 10 years since both girls came out, its obvious there not alike so why keep comparing the two, because they happened to work for disney, and have blonde hair, are females, and started out in the pop genre. Both girls have moved from pop, Britneys last CD was much more dance/club themed, and Christina's was definitely R&B/Jazz. Its still astonishing to see if someone is a fan of one girl, they must cruelly hate the other, this aint 1999! In any event, its way to soon for Britney to perform, I can see why she would want to, prove people shes still relevant, can put on a great show, and possibly promote her last CD, but unless her camp knows for sure she can pull it of then its likely going to be a disaster, and with all the progress shes made, it be unfortunate to have a setback, but thats life.

To re-address a subject everybody was discussing last page-

Um, "vocal walk-through's" are known in the professional world as "marking" a rehearsal. For live singers out there, it allows you to save your voice for the performance. Marking basically means singing more quietly, projecting less, perhaps taking it down an octave, speaking in rhythm, etc.- but you always must support your voice or you can fry your voice.

Lots of pop singers use a huge glottal attack and vocal fry to begin the way they sing- "oops I"- before each vowel there is a big stop in air flow and the vocal folds (yeah, folds not chords) close against each other and then open and close again very hard and rapidly. Kinda hurts.

I'm not trying to smack pop singers, but pop tarts like Spears tend to cease voice lessons and don't have solid training- if she's lost her voice, it could be because she doesn't practice, never relearned her body after her pregnancies (it affects hormones which affect your voice), never learned to transition her voice after puberty hit (women's voices change more slowly than men's) blew out her voice with the smoking/ drinking, etc.

What frustrates me is the idea anyone thinks that you can dance up a storm for an hour and a half and sing beautifully without being out of breath, unsupported at times, etc.

Come back live singers! If you're a singer and dancer, bill yourself as such, and admit to using backing traks.

By the way, studio magi can fix flat notes, splice together good takes, and use many back up singers that imitate the singer's voice. In some of today's singer's songs, I cannot tell who the back up singer is and who the actual artist is (and they can overlap the singer onto herself, which adds to the confusion). GAH!

Agreed. That's why I've always liked Christina the best out of all of them who came out around that time. Mandy Moore seems like a sweet girl but isn't the greatest singer -- I loved her in Saved, though. Jessica... ugh.
