R.I.P. Paul Newman
I have some sad, sad, heartbreaking news. Hollywood legend, humanitarian and possibly one of the hottest men to walk the face of this earth, Paul Newman, passed away yesterday at the age of 83 at his home in Westport, CT. His spokesperson said he had died after a battle with cancer. No other details were given.
Paul was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning 1 for his work in "The Color of Money." He also starred in one of my favorite films of all-time "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." He retired from acting last year.
In 1982, he founded "Newman's Own," a line of food products. Proceeds from the company are donated to charity. As of last year, they have donated around $250 million to worthy causes. Newman's Own Lemonade will always have a permanent spot in my refrigerator.
Paul also cofounded the "Hole in the Wall Gang Camp," a summer camp for sick children. The camp has expanded within the U.S. and in other countries.
One of Paul's other loves was racing. In addition to being a racer himself, he also owned his own team of cars. When he was 70, his team won the 24 Hours of Daytona making him the oldest person to win in a major race.
Paul is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joanne Woodward, his 5 children and two grandchildren.
The Newman Foundation issued this statement:
"Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all. Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one's life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance. An exceptional example is the legacy of Newman's Own. What started as something of a joke in the basement of his home, turned into a highly-respected, multi-million dollar a year food company. And true to form, he shared this good fortune by donating all the profits and royalties he earned to thousands of charities around the world, a total which now exceeds $250 million. While his philanthropic interests and donations were wide-ranging, he was especially committed to the thousands of children with life-threatening conditions served by the Hole in the Wall Camps, which he helped start over 20 years ago. He saw the Camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back, and raise a little hell. Today, there are 11 Camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Through the Camps, well over 135,000 children have had the chance to experience what childhood was meant to be."We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person."
Rest in peace, Paul. You will be forever missed!

Believe me, his pain was controlled...He had the money for it, and I'm speaking from experience. Someone very close to me who was very wealthy died in peace, not that he didn't experience pain, but his death was peaceful. That's how it's done now a days...for those who can afford it. I'm not saying he's not a loss. I'm saying we all have to die some time and those of us lucky enough to live long enough will die of some kind of cancer. He lived a long, full, life. He had chidren, got to see them grow up, got to meet his grandchildren, lived a LAVISH life that ended a couple of years beyond the average life expectancy...This is NOT a tragedy, it is a LOSS. There is a difference.
The fact that I knew someone who did not like him is just that-second hand info...I didn't know this person personally, but I did ADMIRE his looks, his acting, and his charitable contributions, but I don't consider his charitable contributions to be "quiet" nor do I think they necessarily should be. THERE. Jesus people.

Sorry, Roger, you are tiger now...
TRM-- Fuck you. You just proved yourself to be among the many who just can't admit they made a mistake, so it's really not worth my time. There. The "petty" argument is now at rest, retard.
I'm still in shock, complete shock.

Someone who isn't complacent, who doesn't cop out." P.N. <-- mission accomplished.
Damn he was SUCH the hotness when he was younger. He shall be missed!
Your face!

I saw you finally got all your art stuff out of detention hall. Congrats! You need to send me a picture of some of your work

If you don't have a sense of humour, you probably don't have any sense at all.
What a "kidding around session" in the basement ended up being Newmans Brand with all proceeds and profits to the tune of $250m going to various charities. He also started a kid's camp for ill children with cancer.
That he had a long and fulfilling life encompassing all the things that were his passions is a blessing.
He was not by any stretch a media whore and if he was a cranky old puss according to a friend of a friend means zero to me. There are lessions to be learned here and that is to leave our space better than what it was when we got here.

Tigerlily, Newman's death is not a tragedy, except for the possibility that he might have died in pain. He had a good run and did a lot of good in his life, which in and of itself is far more than many of the so-called stars of today will do with their lives (most are just obsessed with drugs, sexual dalliances, shopping and general fame-whoring). I suppose everyone is saddened because his death marks the end of another era in Hollywood: that of the gorgeous, funny, intelligent working actor who was also a family man and a person with a social conscience. I can't think of any actor (or actress) at present who can touch him in any of these qualities.
So his passing is sad - there is no one else like him, nor is there anyone around who can replace him.
It's always easy to diss someone, Tigerlily. But there are times when it's a bit petty and mean.
I would have expected more from a tiger, being a noble, beautiful animal and all.

I know, I'm just sayin' I liked his ass as an actor, but did not know him as a person, and I appreciate his charitable contributions (which he was WELL ABOVE THE MEANS TO DO), but I don't see how his contributions, being in every grocery store in the nation are any more "quiet" than Brangelina's. That's all I'm saying. Yeah, he was not the media whore that Brangelina is, not by a long shot, but I tend to not give kudos to that.
That, and he lived his life expectancy and beyond...That's all I'm sayin'...We can't go on forever...He will in his films an through his charities...I hardly see his death at 83 a tragedy, though...

Sorry, Roger, you are tiger now...
@Tigerlily
I'm not going to feverishly defend a man I didn't know but from all accounts, I don't think that's the case. He may have enjoyed his wealth, but he lived a fairly low key life. He was an active participant in his community and in his charitable endeavors. There are links in this thread to stories about his charities and his involvement.
Why did the guy you know think he was a prick?
Submitted by Tigerlilly on September 27, 2008 - 9:31pm.
Meh, I knew a guy who was his neigbor, basically he said the guy was a prick, but that his wife was very, very nice. I mean, yeah, he was a good actor, and yeah, he gave to charity in a VERY high profile way, let's get real (COPORATION)..., but he died at 83 above the average life expectancy for a male, and lived a charmed life to the end...Tears? Yeah, no.

Actually, if you read my post, I said that if you were correcting other media reports you might have said so-- MK's feelings aside, your post was inaccurate, or incomplete at best. It is what it is, and even if he doesn't care, shouldn't we?

Karen,
Honestly, put the petty argument to rest. I corrected what I meant.

Yeah, no. Everyone dies. Why is this so very tragic? Cuz he can pretend on stage good, is pretty, and gave a portion of his OUTRAGEOUS income (which didn't make a dint in his lavish lifestyle) to charity? No, he was a good actor, and a somewhat charitable human being (because he had the LUXURY of being able to be)...Yeah, he desereves kudos for what he did, but ANY more than even Brangelina? Why?

You are correct, but where does MK say that his marriage to JW is his first? All of his info. is correct, as far as I can see. If you are correcting other media reports, MK might appreciate you clarifying that.

Nowhere did I say I was correcting our beloved MK (And I honestly don't think he's as sensitive to what is said on this board as you think he is) .

Nowhere did I say I was correcting our beloved MK (And I honestly don't think he's as sensitive to what is said on this board as you think he is) . A lot of media reports don't mention his first wife or that he had three kids with her before Woodward. My mom, who grew up in that generation, said it was kinda the scandal at that time. I'm glad he made right with Woodward, but you have to admit, it might've been tough for his kids from his previous marriage.
We don't judge men on the color of their skin, where they went to school or how much money is in their pockets. But rather on the content of their hearts... and on how they treat others.
By any measure, Paul Neuman is a hero. We've been lucky to walk the earth with such a legend.

RIP, Paul Newman. Thank you for being you.
"Nothing gold stays"...
Aside from his contribution to movie and theater
and the work of the "Newman's Own" Foundation proceeds, Paul Newman's greater legacy is the person that he was. A very charitable man along with his wife, I know they both have been involved many worthy causes over the years.
My Paul Newman encounters:
(a big deal for me at the time)
I visited their Malibu home in conjunction with an Autisic Childrens beach party for which they most generously opened their home to one Saturday more than 30 years ago.
I spotted him in a hotel we were both staying in in Monterey, CA in conjunction with a car race at Luguna Seca Raceway.
While he will be missed,he lives on with every Salad Dressing and Spagetti Sauce bottle label on shelves in stores and homes every where.

We lost a wonderful friend due to death from influenza in this last year and his partner had to rise from the ashes of grief and tried to move forward. We see him now and then and for some reason we tend to look behind him hoping to see the one who has passed on. They were that connected to each other.

I am honestly a bit happy I did not see this yesterday, as if it was my birthday, it would have ruined it, as it has today. Paul will forever be missed. What a wonderful man, handsome too!

The one thing that needs to be corrected is that she isn't his first wife---He was married to his first wife for about nine years, and then the year of his divorce, he married Woodward.

R.I.P. Mr. Newman and my condolences to his family.
I think Brangelina can take a que from Mr. Newman of what being a philanthropist truly means. He is a wonderful example of what doing good for the world means without being loud about it. Even as he was sick he kept it classy by staying out of the tabloids...
amen to that..
I never heard of the "Hole in the Wall" camps, they sound great....any one heard of them?

A talented actor and a beyond gorgeous man- inside and out. We won't see anyone else with a body of work like his, a commitment to charity like his, or a marriage like his and Joanne Woodward's for a very, very, very long time... if ever.
I've been inspired to order Cool Hand Luke from OnDemand. Watching it now.
sigh
Sad news indeed. He was gorgeous throughout his entire life. True talent and humanitarian.

it would be such a great legacy to continue Newman's Own...I doubt they would even think of pulling it.

I hope not, and it is doubtful they would, unless there is some obscure clause we don't know about. However, men like Paul Newman are anything but short-sighted, so I am sure he would have made provisions for its continued operation.
he went on oprah to promote newman's own once. as he's taking an item out of the oven, he uses oven mits.
oprah (surprised) is that hot?
paul newman (politely) well, i'm an actor and they tell us to 'play the heat'.
I always thought that was so funny. iirc oprah had several different people on. he was there just to do a couple of little recipes and explain how newman's own helped charity.
I loved seeing him in movies. this is such sad news.
