Snow, I'm not a finance person, just a conspiracy junkie. This fellow, Don McAlvany (Phoenix-based), PREDICTED this meltdown at least 5 years ago! He's been a guest on Coast to Coast AM a number of times. There have been a number of radio shows this past week on the topic and advice for people on what to do. If you want some interesting straight-up real info on the meltdown, sign up for STREAMLINK - its only 6.95 a month and you can listen to all the shows anytime. Snow, Don McAlvany was telling people 5 years ago that if they had ANY equity in their house they should sell NOW (meaning back then), bank the cash (or buy gold, but its kinda late for that now with the price), and rent for a few years until it was safe to get back in the housing market. If you have equity and can sell the condo, do it NOW before it gets worse, because it WILL get worse. Right now there's a false deflation of gas prices cuz the mideast is trying to get us to vote Republican, but as soon as the election is over, gas will go up again.

As far as cashing out your 401k - keep in mind that there's a heavy penalty up front - like 25% to take it out. On top of that, you have to declare it as income for the next income tax return. So if you make, say $60k, and you get $200k from your 401k, you will be taxed on $260k for the year. (I could be mistaken, but that's my understanding.) If you do decide to cash out, I would wait until the dow goes back up to 10,000. No telling if that will happen anytime soon. It might just before the election (just a guess)...but that's certainly a question for stockbroker. Then there's the option of moving the money to differnt places - like bonds and such. But if the entire economy collapses, i'd rather have the cash stuffed in my mattress.

Snowy- sorry to butt in, but I heard from a fund manager on the radio that you shouldn't sell now. For stocks, you are supposed to sell when they are high, not when they are low, so just sit tight and hopefully the market will correct itself. And if you want to buy a house in a different area, it might be a good time to sell because you'd be getting a good deal on what you choose to buy, most likely and there might be a lot to choose from right now. Just something to think about.

if your plans to retire are in 15 + years, then continue to invest in your 401k. You will be "buying low and selling high" when its time to retire. And, you will be getting more value for your nest egg in the LONG run.
The financial crisis will eventually work itself out. What is happening to the USA and Global economy was LONG overdue. The banking and financial systems needed some serious discipline. They are now getting it.
The days of free wheelin' and spending like drunken sailors on shore leave are OVER... for everyone including consumers who took on too much debt and were leaving beyond their means. This is across all income levels.
Also, what is happening is proof that deregulation DOES NOT work.
The banking and financial industry (and executives running it) cannot be trusted to self-regulate which is what deregulation essentially is.
Your 401k will eventually bounce back...but it will take time. Continue to sock away money into it.
