Jenny McCarthy Must Have Gotten To Him
Yesterday, some dumb fuck quotes from Denis Leary's upcoming book made the rounds and now he's trying to fix the situation by saying his comments were taken out of his context. In his book, Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid, Denis writes that autism is an excuse used by bad parents. He really brought it to the shit farm by writing, "I don't give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you - yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both."
Denis issued a statement to E! saying it's just a misunderstanding that can be solved by reading his book, specifically the chapter "Autism Schmautism," where the quotes were taken from. He says that little bites from his book do not clearly represent his point of view.
Denis goes on to babble, "I not only support the current rational approaches to the diagnoses and treatment of real autism but have witnessed it firsthand while watching very dear old friends raise a functioning autistic child. The point of the chapter is not that autism doesn't exist - it obviously does - and I have nothing but admiration and respect for parents dealing with the issue, including the ones I know. The bulk of the chapter deals with grown men who are either self-diagnosing themselves with low-level offshoots of the disease or wishing they could as a way to explain their failed careers and troublesome progeny."
Please, he leaked those quotes himself. I would read his book, but I would rather stare at a hot pile of caca. It's the same thing.

I was pissed when I read what he said in the last article, because I work with an autistic kid. However, I kinda get what he meant now (don't yell at me), that he didn't mean that autistic kids don't have autism, just that some people try to come up with any excuse for their lives, and use autism as an excuse. So I hate him less now. lol

You're right, but that has nothing to do with autism. The parents you're describing aren't the ones overdiagnosing their kids and sending them to therapy. They're the ones ignoring real problems until the kids are desperate for even negative attention.

Ohhh, that changes everything. It's based on personal experience! With. One. Child. There is no difference between Denis Leary and Jenny McCarthy. They don't care enough about autism to meet other people who have it. They care about whatever will get attention for themselves.
What a piece of douche! He was targeting children with disabilities. Does he think everyone is illiterate too?? Sounds like he is saying only folks with functioning autism is worthy of any respect. I do NOT agree with what he said.
HOWEVER. I have known a few parents who were whipped into utter frenzies because of a "diagnosis". One kid didn't talk until he was well past 2 years old. Anyone could tell that he was perfectly normal and intelligent. He just didn't say very many words. His poor parents, with all the "early intervention" and all the experts making them paranoid. I kept telling his mother, "There is NOTHING wrong with him." It's a shame, because instead of enjoying their kid, they were immersed in anxiety. Horrible. He's perfectly fine, of course.
Naturally, it would be a shame for a child who needs real help not to get it. But I just think something is out of balance.

I do agree with him to a certain extent. Although there are certain children who are truely autistic, there are others who really need a swift kick in the ass and told to straighten up. As a 40 year old woman, I am continously reminded of how bad some of these mothers are. I've never seen anything like it. Go to a McDondald's or a mall food court, and they are just screaming at their children. I told you! Listen to me! If you don't! No wonder they grow up resentful and hateful, I would too. My brother and I were typical kids in the early 70's, but our mother never disrepected us or talked down to us unless it was an isolated situation.
