Hilary Duff has a new video out for her song "Reach Out," which completely samples rips off Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus." No. No. No. This is illegal, right? A ho like Hilary Duff can't just take a Depeche Mode song, rip it to shreds, violate it and spit all over it! Something must be done! I want to reach out and slap her.
When I turn off the sound, the video isn't that bad. But Hilary Duff is trying to bring the sexy and it isn't really working. It's like a cutesy chipmunk, putting on lingerie and trying to sex you with their eyes. It's a little uncomfortable.

THANK you for the Gloria Jones link - Tainted Love. For some totally unknown reason (I was a teenager, then), I've never heard of her. I listened to some of her other songs on YouTube, thanks to you, and she was terrific!!!
I mainly listened to Soul and Blues, Motown, etc. and can't figure out why I have never heard her sing, before.

Not to defend Duff or anything, but since this is much more than a sample, she (or someone associated with the record production) would have had to obtain permission from DM or whoever owns the rights to the song. So they were cool with it, needed the money, or both. Use this as a chance to educate the young about the original music.
As far as Tainted Love goes, Gloria Jones preceded Soft Cell by about 20 years.

Sure, it's not as good as Soft Cell (who by the way covered, not sampled, Gloria Jones' Northern Soul classic, although they did cover The Supremes "Where Did Our Love Go" on the b-side and it was a medley with "Tainted Love" on the 12 inch, meaning with that on the b-side they famously got virtually zero in royalties with their biggest hit - *music geek*) but it's great pop in its own right and a creative use of sample, not a carbon copy.
Can she do this live? because it sounds like its run through several machines before coming out as a pop song.
The same ones Madonna and Britney use I think.

This was painful to listen to. I still can't decide if it's worse than Rihanna sampling Soft Cell (who sampled the Supremes, but we'll fight over that another time). I'm so sick of this sampling phenomenon. Just proves to me that most artists nowadays are talentless shitheads without a single bone of creativity or originality in them. Sampling was cute the first few times, now it's nauseating.
There's something very awkward about Duff's sexy posing in this video. Too deliberate and contrived. I'll pass, thank you very much.
Side note: I saw DM in concert, oh about 10 years back, and they closed the show with this song. It was an out-of-body experience. Out of all the concerts I've been to, that still sticks out as my most favorite moment ever. Something about that sexy Dave Gahan, his voice, the lights, the music, the energy, I nearly orgasmed there, whew.
