Prop 8 Passed....

Look at these two precious lesbians being all smiley and married. Well, Prop 8 has come along and stomped all over their pure happiness. They're just two sad lesbians now and that is a sin! Gayelles should never be sad.

Prop 8, which re-bans gay marriage, will most likely pass. Right now 95% of the votes have been counted. 52% are for and 48% are against. There's still around 4 million absentee ballots that need to be counted, but it's probably not enough to turn things around. The state is no longer marrying the gays as of today. It's looking grim and gross.

A few of the 18,000 couples that were married will file lawsuits. Civil rights groups are also challenging the measure by asking the Supreme Court to strike it down based on the argument that you can't just take shit away from one certain group.

I don't get this shit. I'm a tax-paying dumb bitch like everyone else. I should have the right to fly to California, catch a sugar daddy on his death bed, marry him, wait a couple of months for him to kick it and then collect all his cash. Seriously, that's my lifelong goal and now a bunch of fun killers in California have stopped me from being able to achieve this!

this guy is also against "Affirmative Action" and is favor of another form of lynching called the stoning of gays! He's a diagnose schizophrenic and has Tourettes! yeah (my) Blacks sided with a racist demon to helped ban gay marriages! I ended a 28 year old relationship with someone who has a gay brother because she voted against gay marriages! and she was black! The Church (religion) got my people so chained up, if it were worded in a way would vote themselves back into fucking SLAVERY!!! fuck the religious and also people who call females "whores", "bitch" "ho" and the like because that type of language stems from The Buybull that demeans females and makes is ok to call us such nasty words just like its wrong to call someone a "fag"!

Obama is not in favor of gay marriage but he was OPPOSED to Prop 8

"I think it's unnecessary. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage. But when you start playing around with constitutions, just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that's not what America's about. Usually, our constitutions expand liberties, they don't contract them."

In addition to expressing his opposition to Proposition 8, Obama said he believes and supports "strong civil unions ... that provide legal rights to same-sex couples [so] that they can visit each other in the hospital if they get sick, [so] they can transfer property to each other. If they've got benefits, they can make sure those benefits apply to their partners. I think that's the direction we need to go in. I think young people are ahead of the curve on this for the most part. Their attitude, generally, is that we should be respectful of all people, and that's the kind of politics I want to practice."

I am a card carrying hetero and registered Independent and I just don't fucking get it! If gays want to marry why shouldn't they be able to and why the fuck is the government interested in what they do anyway? Fuck it, let them marry (and divorce). What the fuck are voters in Cal thinking? Maybe it's not suprising if you think about it, Obama has publicly said he opposes gay marriage and Cal went overwhelming for BO, I guess the trail is there somehow.

In this country there should be no second class CITIZENS. As long as someone harms no other citizen or group of citizens, they should be allowed to do whatever they want.

70% of black voters supported the gay-marriage ban. How's that for irony?

The couples suing are ones who want to get married in the future -- the first 2 named plaintiffs were planning on getting married this year but one of their parents was in ill health so the wedding had to be postponed. The rest are planning on getting married (for the sake of marriage itself or for the sake of adopting a child) sometime in the near future. They're asking for an injunction on Prop 8 until the lawsuit has passed, basically.

I feel awful for them. I know how hard it is to plan a wedding when most of your family lives hours away... I can't even imagine if they had passed a law saying I could no longer marry my husband!

The only way the lawsuit could be any more well-written was if it mentioned the ass tax and In-and-Out Burger lucite gift bags. I have high hopes that it will win and Prop 8 will be overturned.

aquarius's picture

Those statistics, like all, can be skewed any way you want them. How many PEOPLE, period, voted for Prop 8? Probably more whites than blacks, huh?

And as a white person from a racist state with no desire to be racist myself, I'm not in the habit of blaming one historically persecuted group for helping (along with a healthy-sized white electorate) deny rights to another historically-persecuted group. I blame the types of people with whom I have been acquainted my entire life -- older (and a few younger) conservative "Christians" who believe that being gay is a choice, that gays are child molesters, that soon people will be able to marry their dogs and farm animals, et. al. These beliefs, period, are what is wrong -- for blacks and for whites -- and are not unique to either race.

So saying, "Ohhh, if all the blacks hadn't come out to vote, Prop 8 would have passed," is a fallacy. The question was worded quite strangely, and there are quite a few non-English native speakers in California, I don't doubt that a great deal of people were confused and voted for when they meant against, or vice versa. With so many factors at play, it's impossible to pin blame on only one source.

Barack Obama may have helped California Proposition 8 gay marriage ban pass.

Around 70 per cent of the African-American voters who overwhelmingly backed Mr. Obama also approved Proposition 8, helping pass the controversial ballot measure despite a small majority of whites voting against the ban on same-sex unions. Hispanic and Asian voters were split on the issue.

The state's black turnout jumped to 10 per cent of the electorate, up from 6 per cent in 2004, as voters inspired by Mr. Obama flocked to the polls for the first time. The Democratic candidate took the state with 61 per cent of the popular vote...

...There is some irony in a population that has benefited from increased civil liberties voting against granting those same liberties to another community--not to mention the gay community at large is very pro-civil liberties for minorities.

it is my understanding that the state cannot retroactively enforce this amendment meaning that the gay couples who are already married can stay married. perhaps these couples that are suing are doing it for the benefit of all gay people?

In that long ass thing, it talks about how many states have now banned common-law marriages because people can just up and leave them when they feel like it (or try to anyway).

But I agree with you - marriage isn't necessary in this day and age. You want to be executor of your loved one's will? Go to a lawyer. You want to own the same house? Same thing. If you go to the right places, you can get all the same benefits married people get without actually tying the knot. I mean, call me old fashioned, but what's wrong with living in sin?!

i still can't believe it! i thought we (society) were beyond that.

now how about making this an opportunity for another state to stand up and allow same sex marriage. maybe Nevada, they can open their arms and welcome them. maybe it would boost their economy, and bump up tourism for weddings even more?

just a thought, i don't see why it couldn't be made into a marketing venture to promote tolerance, and acceptance to all people. no matter race, creed, or orientation!

They didn't even know about frickin' bacteria back then. If you think about it, the bible didn't throw us one fucking scientific bone. But thanks to modern science we can now get a broader perspective of how genetics shapes our sexual orientation, ergo homosexuality IS a completely natural variation of human sexuality.

I haven't read the comments yet, but I just want to say that I read the lawsuit filed today and it is very solid. The composition of the California Supreme Court is the same as in 2004, so it's highly unlikely that Prop 8 won't be struck down.

The Constitution of California is unique in that it fundamentally guarantees civil rights to all groups -- it didn't have to add amendments guaranteeing these rights, like the US did with the 14th Amendment. So adding an amendment (which they're arguing is really a revision, and therefore illegal) that takes these rights AWAY from one specific group is obviously completely against the spirit of the California Constitution, and it's not going to stand.

That said, I am truly disappointed that there are still so many bigoted people in the world. I don't even know if I want to read the comments, because I know that if there are 400+ that means the trolls are out. My sister-in-law recently came out (in a very conservative state) and is having a hard time dealing with the subsequent negative attention, and my heart breaks for her sometimes. She is only 17, and one of the bravest people I know. I remember how scared and confused I was about sex and love in high school (and into college) and I had the added privilege of not having my sexual preference scrutinized, ridiculed, and condemned by a large proportion of society. I can't even imagine what she must be going through so much of the time, and for what reason? So some Southern Baptist can feel like he's earning points in heaven? It makes me sick.

@ radio siren:

thanks for posting that, didn't catch the comments section when I read the article. But I feel energized after last night. These people have nearly made Christianity synonymous with hate, just look at the nasty bitter trolls on this thread. radio siren's picture

I was so proud yesterday when we voted in Obama, but I'm so disgusted and embarrassed for my state of California today. I really don't understand how people buy into the reasoning that gay marriage somehow taints heterosexual marriage. I'm a person who values marriage and I really feel that gays wanting to marry actually HONORS marriage. It shows that the institution of marriage entailing love and commitment is still something desirable! There are not many better values than love and commitment and I find it honorable that gays are seeking these values in their own lives.

Here's a great comment I found on the site that Pearl Necklace linked to:

"I recently attended the civil uinion of my friend Roger to his partner Ron with my wife, and from everything supporters of prop 8 have told me I expected an immediate diminishment of my love for my wife, oddly I felt nothing different. At the reception someone slipped and wished the happy couple luck on thier new marriage, surely this was it I thought, the complete destruction of my own marriage, once again I found I still was in love with my wife. As the night progressed I never once found that the expression of anothers love ever affecting my own marriage in any mesurable way. I was also surprised that despite predictions the vengeful hand of God seemed very much in abbeyance, I was so concerned I asked the minister who performed the ceremony when I could expect to find polygamy, incest and bestiality all acceptable as I had heard gay marriage was the gateway to all of them, unfortunately he had no ansewers just some spiel about if God is love how could affirmation of that love be an affront to Him, yadda, yadda.

"It's been 5 months now and I am still waiting for my marriage to be snuffed like a candle in the winds of gay marriage, and for the complete moral break down of society the right has been promising me. I am begining to suspect that they may be incorrect, but it could be my understanding of thier message so if anyone can explain it to me without quoting the bible I'd really appreciate it."
