Melissa Etheridge Might Have The Right Idea

Since Prop 8 passed in California, Melissa Etheridge's marriage to Tammy Lynn Michaels isn't really a marriage anymore in the legal sense. I guess? Right? Well, Melissa will protest the ban on gay marriage by not paying state taxes! Melissa wrote on The Daily Beast about her plan:

Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.

Okay, cool I don't mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We're gay! I am sure there will be a little box on the tax forms now single, married, divorced, gay, check here if you are gay, yeah, that's not so bad. Of course all of the waiters and hairdressers and UPS worker

Hmmm....no state taxes in California? CA already has In-N-Out and now the gays don't have to pay taxes! Woo hoo! Grab my dildo collection, pa, I'm going out west!

Think of all the things I can buy with my extra dough from not paying state taxes. I can buy more discontinued Mother's Animal Cookies, I can eat In-N-Out all day, I can even go to Disneyland like once (that shit ain't cheap)! Fuck. All of us can go to T.G.I. Friday's and the Mudslides will be on me! It'll be a 24-hour party!

That's until the IRS comes to kill my fun and take me away in handcuffs. When I start screaming, "Melissa Etheridge told me I didn't have to pay taxes," they'll just nod their heads and shuttle me off to prison. Oh well. At least you can bring me warm Hot Pockets during visiting days. You'll owe me for all those cocktails I bought you! And I'm sure I can be someone's wife in the clink!

Oh FUCK Melissa Etheridge with a limp dick. I am single and because of my life-style choice I have been made into a second class citizen as well by having to pay more taxes. So since i am being treated as a second class citizen by not being given the same benefits as couples, I am also gonna refuse to pay state taxes.

Dumb bitch.

We dont wanna discriminate against people because of their life-style choices but married couples get tax breaks while singles dont. Why is that? On the one hand we say people shouldnt be penalized for their life-styles but with that we only mean gays, not Mormons or single people.

This is all such bullshit. it's all discrimination based on questionable interest group politics. If half of Hollywood was Mormon, you bet we would be debating polygamy now like it was the ultimate law ever debated.

It's disgusting that they ALLOWED the population to vote on other peoples civil rights! I mean if that was the case I'm sure woman would still not be able to vote and slavery would still be around. Things change because the governement who is supposed to protect it's citizens rights enforce acceptance and freedom for all! NOT just for the MAJORITY but for the MINORITY as well. Gees. O, I don't think they should HAVE to. I think they should try taking their bags of money elsewhere. And maybe they can get their straight friends to do it too. Only because of the statement it makes - that's all.
------------------------------

Sorry angel - I was addressing the person who posted that they move....

But I do see your point re. taking their $$ out of the state...it could have an impact but I think only if done en masse (which probably won't happen).

Let’s get the wrongness out of the way – “No taxation without representation” is a goddamn stupid rallying cry in this instance. No representation means just that – you can’t vote. In the American Revolution, England’s parliament, elected by the English, told Americans what they would pay in taxes. That was their beef. Last I checked, gays are still allowed to vote…

A stinking rich millionaire in Hollywood is upset? … I can’t think of the last time that made me give a damn about _any_ issue.

I also don't agree with the post re. gay couples having to relocate so that they can marry - why should they have to?

Them Polygamous Mormons aren't part of the Mormons proper. They were booted for being slutty. I have some Mormon friends (sorta) that get beside themselves if they ever hear people make the connection.

Sadly, I have a friend who is gay and Mormon(?). I don't know if she, eventually, has left the church. She has stomped off (not permanently, I'm sure) and is angry with me because I kept telling her to tell those freaks to go eat a dick if they thought she couldn't be heavenly because she was gay. Lemme tellya - the way all that suppression was affecting her was definitely NOT helping her be the kind of person MY Gods would have. (Altho my Gods will take anyone who is sincere, regardless of their worldly accomplishments.)

Gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts and Connecticut and New York recognizes marriages performed in those states. If Melissa Etheridge, Ellen and others really want to vote with their pocketbooks why don't they make one of these states their legal residence? Support the states that have granted you your civil rights; California and other states will get the message if they lose revenue when gays with fame and/or money support states that support them.

On NPR yesterday they were trying to give voice to both sides of the debate and as a voice of someone who supported prop 8 they interviewed a minister who discussed how it was against the views of his church.

I DON'T CARE! I don't care if your religion doesn't agree with it. Let's invalidate ALL legal marriages. Do you know how many men (and perhaps women) would be dancing in the street if they suddenly had no legal or financial ties to their spouses? The numbers would far exceed those of the California protesters!
----------------------------

LOL, I definitely think you're on to something there!

I actually saw an interview yesterday morning with a couple who are launching a lawsuit to fight Prop 8, and they said that if their marriage is declared invalid, then they might push to have all heterosexual marriages declared invalid.

To AbJam - great summary of the constitutional issues. And to your point about Vivian being a woman who doesn't seem to understand the constitution - no need to hide behind that user name "Vivian" we know who you are - how are you enjoying your time back in Alaska, governor?

fatcat84's picture

This is not childish, taxation without representation is something that we are protected from by our constitution.

I'm not even going to get started on what my tax money goes to because it is way too early to be that mad about something. However, as a straight person, I know that at least I am being represented and allowed to live the life that I want. Yes, I had to deal with 8 years of the Bush administrations, and yes, I do not agree with the Iraq war, but at least I am not being asked to completely rearrange my personal life based on the whims of voters.

Politics and religion have nothing to do with one another. Our founding fathers saw it this way, our constitution was written to explicitly state a separation of church and state. With this in mind, I am going to also say that marriage and religion have nothing to do with one another either. Sure, you can get married in a church. But you know what? I did not get married in a church, and I married someone that does not believe in a god and here we are, legally married. We made a vow to each other. This is all that gay people are asking for.

Refusing to pay taxes is the highest form of civil disobedience, and I say Go Melissa! Yes, the feds will be after you, but the only way that anything ever changes is through these extreme measures o protest. We have been cornered to fear protest in this country. What a shame, what a shame.

For all of you that thought I was being some sort of ahole for saying I thought it was probably the mexican vote in California that brought about the whole Prop 8 thing....

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27584685

I wasn't being racist. Those mormons spent a lot of money. My bet is they went around to a lot of churches and with mexicans being catholic/machismo/procreation, they don't empathize with homosexuals.

And for all the people that say they "just think gay marriage is wrong"... do you understand the difference between what you think is wrong and the law? I mean, I know you aren't lawyers, but the civil rights movement was about protecting people that the majority would discriminate against...that's sort of the whole point. If you don't want gay marriage, you'd really have to justify it by going back and overturning all the civil rights laws.

kiwikim's picture

As far as singles being discriminated against and gay domestic partners not...I guess the difference is that you have an option to marry and they don't. And domestic partner benefits aren't given in all states. I think you have to go through a lot of hoops to get it...prove you've been living together for like ten years or something. Someone over there would have to help me on this one.

But I agree...we pay too much to support ONE lifestyle..getting married and having kids. You get tax breaks when you are married, earned income credits, you don't qualify for welfare pretty much unless you've got kids. I guess at one point there was a benefit to free education, and I'd argue to a certain extent there still is, BUT the real benefit to society would be if people stopped having so many kids.
There would have to be a huge paradigm shift for society to stop with thinking families were the be all and end all. Capitalism loves procreaters...they buy huge houses, big cars, lots of junk, etc.... families with children are BIG consumers. That is another reason why Bush loved immigrants from Mexico...for every white child born in california, mexican women are having six (if they came up illegally). That's a lot of future fodder for the system!

anna hannah's picture

I understand her point, although it's childish, and I understand her anger, Prop 8 is a disgusting thing. While it's all well and good to joke about things and rant and get it off your chest, never forget that your fucking with the US Government. The Feds especially when it involves tax fuckery don't have a sense of humor.

Good on Melissa!
It is ridiculous to have told people that they have the right to marry and then tell them that they are actually not legitimately married at all!
I realise that what she is saying is tongue in cheek but good on her for actually showing how ridiculous the whole situation is!

Also - there are a TON of things I don't agree with in gov't.

Paying taxes for SCHOOLS when we don't have freakin kids is one.

And what if the person I voted for didn't win? They aren't representing me, so I guess I shouldn't have to pay either.

I think our taxes should be 97% less. I also say everyone stop paying - gays and non-gays. Bring our govt to a HALT. That would be the best thing for our country. Govt has RUINED this nation with its corrupt crap. Now they want to take over our 401Ks and IRAs - just like Social Security - which is bankrupt.

Govt has to be STOPPED.

ok - how about my domestic partner who happens to be the opposite sex?

SINGLE PEOPLE are THE most discriminated group around. No tax breaks, no domestic partner insurance unless it's the SAME sex?

I have to actually GET married to have any benefit whatsoever. Gays don't.

Vivian- I have been reading DListed for a while now, but have never bothered registering to leave comments until now... because I can't let you continue to live your life without giving a basic education on the US legislative system:

1.) A president does not have the power to change state law, or in fact enact any law.

2.) The way the constitution is interpreted is to mean that while yes, majority rules... that is with the expressed condition that the rule of majority not impinge on the freedoms of the minority.

3.) The fight for the rights of any group of people in this country is not now nor has ever been a "yawn." I assume that you are a woman. You have the lives and good names of countless women before you to thank for the fact that you have the rights that you have, which before these women were considered by most people to be as you so succintly put it.. a "yawn."

I don't know who you are, but I do know that you need to brush up on yur constitutional law.

that your despite your money, fame, fortune , Emmys Grammys Tony's Oscars, Mercedes, primo table @ the monkey bar of the moment You are STILL a second class citizen here in this nation.

I am calling for a complete travel / vacation boycott in the 3 states of CA , AZ & FLA, a boycott of all Hollywood product & not a dime spent until this law is repealed.
