Melissa Etheridge Might Have The Right Idea
Since Prop 8 passed in California, Melissa Etheridge's marriage to Tammy Lynn Michaels isn't really a marriage anymore in the legal sense. I guess? Right? Well, Melissa will protest the ban on gay marriage by not paying state taxes! Melissa wrote on The Daily Beast about her plan:
Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.Okay, cool I don't mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We're gay! I am sure there will be a little box on the tax forms now single, married, divorced, gay, check here if you are gay, yeah, that's not so bad. Of course all of the waiters and hairdressers and UPS worker
Hmmm....no state taxes in California? CA already has In-N-Out and now the gays don't have to pay taxes! Woo hoo! Grab my dildo collection, pa, I'm going out west!
Think of all the things I can buy with my extra dough from not paying state taxes. I can buy more discontinued Mother's Animal Cookies, I can eat In-N-Out all day, I can even go to Disneyland like once (that shit ain't cheap)! Fuck. All of us can go to T.G.I. Friday's and the Mudslides will be on me! It'll be a 24-hour party!
That's until the IRS comes to kill my fun and take me away in handcuffs. When I start screaming, "Melissa Etheridge told me I didn't have to pay taxes," they'll just nod their heads and shuttle me off to prison. Oh well. At least you can bring me warm Hot Pockets during visiting days. You'll owe me for all those cocktails I bought you! And I'm sure I can be someone's wife in the clink!

Melissa Ethridge is stealing my line. And I had a huge ass editorial I've been working on with the same ideas to send to the LA times since yesterday morning...gathering facts, etc..is what's taking so long.
Oh, well..I'm sure her voice will reach many more than mine ever would.
Although, I'm sure if she and Rojo just boycotted Home Depot and Lowes for the rest of the year the state would lose even more money. See, I can still be sympathetic and snarky at the same time. I know, it's a gift, right?

Cool. I was wondering when someone would have the guts to do this. I mean why do heteros with kids get to tax everyone to hell so that they can send their kids to school for free, get the earned income credit and other tax rebates, welfare, etc? No one lifestyle should dictate what everyone else pays. If people want to have kids, great. Start paying for it. Don't make gays pay for your "lifestyle choices" when you don't want to pay for theirs.
I would do the damn same too! IF I were gay and married to my partner that is. It sucked so hard that Prop 8 passed...I'm not sure what the fuck is wrong with most of the state of California, but I blame religion! This wasn't about morality, this was about RIGHTS! How about all them people who didn't care enough to vote? It's such a silly request - honestly, there's gonna be a massive amount of people who were like: eh. whatever. And they had a more important vote to cast this week - and that's already strenuous. And don't tell me how you ran out and researched and showed up early and so on because it's just not the norm. Obviously, if you're here - you're active. MOST people just can't be bothered with a lot of things. They're too busy not starving. And, in some cases, they're too busy getting fat (to fit the analogy, meaning: rich). Unless it's somehow required you're gonna end up with a slant towards the people who called it - because they are the ones who care enough to do something.

At this point at least, she is still married.
From what I understand, this mess was caused in 2005 by the state legislature, which circumvented the right of the electorate in order to push through a repeal. The citizens of Ca. should have been allowed to vote beforehand because the issue in question was derived from a ballot initiative, therefore the populace was supposed to get its say first, but the leg. sidestepped that. Or something like that!

If all, or most of the gays in CA did this, they couldn't possibly go after them all. In Canada the conservatives (who the fuck else?!) wanted to have a referendum on abortion. So some comedians started gathering thousands of names for a petition for a referendum to change Stockwell Day(huge conservative gov't prick)'s first name to Doris. They dropped that referendum shit pretty quick. Point being...referendums are fucking ridiculous! What is the point of electing officials...they are supposed to represent us and figure that shit out! I'm so disgusted by this Prop 8 mess, I had heard about it but had no idea it even had a chance of passing. So fucking sad, especially in contrast with the joy about Obama.

Whatever the reason a taxpayer decides to withhold taxes in protest, it never works. She won't go to jail, but she'll end up paying the back taxes, with interest and penalties.
