I can't stand Lohan, and I am all for dismantling the fur industry, but I think there are better ways of accomplishing this. And something tells me Lindsay probably just loves the attention and totally missed the point here anyway.

I'm really tired of people that say you can't have leather and be against fur. I realize that farmers do malicious things to animals too, but they aren't supposed to. And I am pro animal all the way, but I do have some leather things and eat meat rarely, when i say rarely i mean rarely. But the biggest thing I have is leather that goes against me being pro animal. But at the same time, if a farmer kills the animal humanely, which they are supposed to, it's a huge difference than the way they do it for fur. I have come to doing things like buying eggs that say "animal friendly" and stuff, which you never can be sure about. I think that organic food is more likely to be animal friendly, but you never know. My thing with leather is that the animals generally were going to be killed for the food regardless and if done humanely, why not ? I don't like killing animals but if the first priority is food, and leather is left over, then i'm fine with leather. But who knows what really goes down. But i'm not a hypocrite when I say no to fur and yes to leather is my point.

I saw a piece on "60 Minutes" last week about the illegal dumping/recycling of American computer waste in Hong Kong.
People are LIVING in these toxic dumps. Breathing the incinerated plastics and poisons. They're dropping like flies from various cancers yet they stay because they'd starve back home in the country.

China is of special interest to me regarding animal welfare and conservation. I bought this book the other day Black Market - Inside the Endangered Species Trade in Asia. There´s this qoute there from a wildlife conservationist in Cambodia that likened the Chinese market to a "giant vacuum cleaner sucking out all the animals".

It´s pretty common knowledge that China has a huge part in the demise of tigers and rhinos worldwide but the fact is that there are countless of other species in danger too because of their fucking traditional chinese medicine (TCM). They used to kill a lot of bears, but to protect wild bears so-called bear farms were established, where the bears live in tiny cages and they milk the bile out of them! So fucking disgusting.

Not sticking up for animal abuse in any way, but it is a COMPLETELY different cultural issue over there. It is certainly shocking to American tourists when they see these acts, but you have to understand, there are things about our culture that are horrifying and confusing to other countries while seeming perfectly acceptable (or at least normal/typical) to us. It's like saying about Hindus, "Well, if they're all so hungry, why don't they just eat their cows?" I work with a ton of Chinese people and they get very upset when they're all lumped into the "Chinese have no regard for life" category.

Now, I totally agree that the U.S. needs to strengthen and enforce its animal welfare laws, and make them applicable to fur-farming.

Exactly. I think it's hard to appreciate something until you get hands on experience. My Sophie has made me a pitbull advocate. I was always against BSL, but I just kinda shook my head and let someone else worry about it until she came into my life. I used to be big into PeTA, but the more I learned, the more disgusted I was. I really think it might have started out as a good idea, but greed is the game they play today. More attention gets them more money from the die hard supporters. If they really cared about animals, they could be doing what Best Friends does. PeTA and the HSUS have enough money to run places like that in every state. Hell, in most places around the world. But hmm. They don't. Tells me all I need to know about them.

The dirt on Lohan is she's banging a man on the side from SamRo. SamRo knows about it but is desperately clinging on to the hope that Lilo may marry her. (I feel for the girl, sucks being a lesbian chasing girls who always go back to the dick). I think the ginger one looks really pretty here I have to say - she is definitely my type, but the overall skankiness would stop me from wanting to get too near her. Poor SamRo your 15 minutes is soon to be up.

And on topic, there was a doc on recently about animals being killed for fur and some of the info in it was truly revolting. Some of them are killed ethically but others are skinned alive - totally and utterly horrifying. As much as I find PETA's publicity tactics quite annoying, their general message is sound.

Great points, both of you. I am anti-fur as well, and about as pro-animal as someone can be, and I think that PETA is idiotic. Don't they understand that they are shooting themselves in the foot and garnering more support for the other side by engaging in such childish antics? They're like the pro-lifers who protest outside Planned Parenthood on Bleecker Street with huge posters of partial-birth abortions. (Except even worse, if that's possible -- at least the pro-lifers don't dare touch anyone or ruin their clothes).

However strongly you feel about a situation, it is NOT okay to assault someone or destroy personal property. Doing so just makes you look like an idiot.

I mean, this situation has gotten people feeling sorry for LiLo! Is that really what PETA wanted?

and yeah Bella, the US does _not_ have some of the best animal rights/protection laws. We have pretty much defected on every international treaty (from CITES to others) - even though we signed it - when it became inconvenient and was in the way of our international interests. Like with whaling: the Japanese use "scientific whaling" as an excuse to slaughter hundreds if not more each year and the US didnt do anything about it (embargo or enforcing it etc) because Japan is an important trade partner - we are not going to "ruin" that over a bunch of whales are we?

And really China...let's not even go there. my friend was there and she said in the markets there....when you order your food, they slaughter the animal right in front of you (like rabbit for example) and it is still shaking and shivering while has been skinned and waiting around for 5 minutes to be beheaded. Life means nothing in china - human or else.

According to wikipedia those laws don´t apply to fur farming:

"In the United States there are no federal laws governing the care, treatment, or killing of animals on fur farms. Animals raised for fur are not covered under the Animal Welfare Act nor the Humane Slaughter Act. State and local laws specific to fur farms are also nonexistent".

But then again, wikipedia isn´t completely reliable.

However, China has become the biggest fur manufacturer and they sure as hell don´t care about animal welfare over there.

The fact of the matter is that MILLIONS of cats and dogs are euthanized every year for the crime of having nowhere to go.
That is their only crime.
