Mrs. Rojo On Larry King!

Joy Behar filled in for Larry King last night, he was off hunting for the souls of children, and she had the unofficial Mrs. Rojo Caliente on her show to talk about the gay marriage ban. I've been majorly strung out, looking for a Rojo fix, so this helped to ease the pain. I watched it last night, focusing on Mrs. Rojo's lips and thinking, "those things have felt the heat of The Rojo!" I'm jealous. On a serious note, Mrs. Rojo is smart in the brains and made some good points.

Also, in a few minutes a huge National protest against Prop 8 begins in every state. Run your ass over there now! And look hot, because there's going to be cameras. Click here to get info for the nearest rally if you're interested in going.

When did Miranda get pretty???

Maybe she has found happiness with the hottness that is Rojo, because it took her this long to all of a sudden start caring about how she looks. lol tryna look jazzed up for the Caliente!

But she makes valid points. The gays should hire her as a spokesperson, because getting all queeny and spewing racial slurs at me black brethren really isn't going to help your cause.

Very impressive. Like I've said a million times gay marriage is legal in the UK and has been for years and we haven't grown extra heads or been struck by lightning.

Speaking of awesome gay persons can you lot in the US, Canada and Oz see 'I'm a celebrity, get me out of here?’ It’s a UK show where slebs go into the Ozzie jungle and horrid things happen to them. Mr Sulu, I mean George Takei is in it and he is fantastic- 71 and he jumped out of a plane! He also seems really nice and we are all glued to the show. I shall vote for him to win over my English slebs as he is the essence of grace under pressure.

Since most of the dumbasses voted for Prop. 8 based on their cherished biblical beliefs, I say lets follow that book to a T.

For starters, on what days shall we stone adulterers? I think Mondays work best. You're already pissed that you have to go to work and what other way to biblically burn off some steam than to stone a couple of horndogs who refuse to walk with Christ.

And what about those brazen hussies who refuse to biblically follow their men? On what days shall we lash them? I say Hump day. Lets save the hangings of the divorced for Friday.

Great, I'm glad you found my post helpful. You know, I don't see the purpose in flipping out with someone. A lot of people who flip out are doing so because they feel unimportant in their daily lives. You had pretty good points yourself that I read in your prior posts. And yeah, even though civil and human rights are technically different, very often, although not always, they are insperable. That especially applies in America where the law states we are all equal, so the law guarantees our human rights. So in America, our civil rights also guarantee human rights. A lot of times it's semantics.

OK, I looked it up cuz I was curious

Human rights refers to the "basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled,"
those rights that individuals have by nature of being born.

Examples of rights and freedoms which are often thought of as human rights include civil and political rights, such as the right to life and liberty, freedom of expression, and equality before the law; and social, cultural and economic rights, including the right to participate in culture, the right to food, the right to work, and the right to education.

Civil and political rights are a class of rights ensuring things such as the protection of peoples' physical integrity; procedural fairness in law; protection from discrimination based on gender, religion, race, sexual orientation, etc; individual freedom of belief, speech, association, and the press; and political participation.

I wasn't born until the 60s, but I graduated from college 25 years ago.

I don't think what I said warrants the stupid attacks about what kind of person I am, etc.

That's bigotry, too.

I NEVER said separate but equal. I said I thought it was fine that "marriage" could be used by everyone. It doesn't affect me in any way that other people want to be married.

I've been on here for a long time, and I'm not taking unwarranted crap from anyone.

The Poisonwood Bible is one of my favorite books because of that message... when the missionaries were trying to introduce the democratic process to elect a tribe's leader, none of the Africans could understand the fairness of a system which ignores the wishes of up to 50 percent of the voters and doesn't encourage people to work out some sort of compromise instead.

It does seem pretty black and white when a piece of legislation like this passes by a margin of 4 percent. So 52 percent of a group wants something COMPLETELY opposite of what the other 48 percent wants, and we should totally ignore the wishes of the 48 percent? I certainly wouldn't call 48 percent a "minority," anyway.

happyface's picture

jiggywidit-

Sure. Civil rights has to do with your rights as a citizen. When we see women in India being put through sex slavery, that's an issue of human rights because it defies what anyone would regard as humane. it has something to do with basic human necessities being deprived. The right to live in good conditions, the right to not be a part of a system that is built on such obvious degradation, not being beaten, etc.
Civil rights has to do with our laws. Our law happens to state that we are all equal and have the right to freedome and the pursuit of happiness. So, in a free society then, we are all entitled to not be discriminated against. For instance, women shouldn't be discriminated against in the workplace based on their gender, so they should receive equal pay for equal work. That is the "pursuit of happiness" (aka the right to propser, not just survive in tolerable conditions). I hope this makes sense. I know there are real academic discussions about the difference, but I just broke it down for you in a nutshell. Sometimes the two terms can overlap, especially in America because we are "all equal".

I saw a comment on an article the other day when someone was trying to defend this different but equal crap. She said 'Ask yourself why black people wanted to sit anywhere on the bus. They were still allowed to ride, right?'
****************************

Exactly. If they're equal, they're equal.
Being told to go sit at the back suggests that they are not regardless if they get to ride.

I don't really get with the majority/minority thing too much either. I mean - if I'm in a group of 10 people and 7 of us want to go to one restaurant and 3 of us hate it we don't just say: Too bad, so sad. We actually STILL try to work out a compromise. (the analogy expresses a tiny issue but it was just the simplest I could pull out of my ass at the moment). The point being that just because it's a minority, I don't think it's cool those people are just IGNORED.

happyface's picture

Whenever a minority is being oppressed, it's wrong. I am all for gay rights, but I do have to say that with the history of slavery, makes people somewhat, I don't know, sensitive. Maybe because the level of hate isn't displayed the same way as it was with blacks back in the day. However, it is opression plain and simple.

And when civil unions carry ALL the same rights as "marriage", then we can progress toward equal rights.

Yes, the words should be no different, but some argue that it is a descriptive difference. (Why don't they just call it "homosexual marriage"?) At least when civil unions carry the same rights as marriage, we'll get the ball rolling. And I'm interested in actually getting there, not just making a point and sticking it to people now. I actually want to accomplish change, so that takes some strategy.

By the way, "equal rights" (civil rights) isn't the same as "human rights". Slavery had to do with "human rights". Perhaps that's the difference.

jiggywidit-

I'm not defending the "seperate but equal" concept here, but I think the problem with that was that their facilities were indeed seperate, but not actually equal. It was based on more than it being an offensive concept.

Phoebe, are you old enough to remember the Supreme Court's Brown Vs. Board of Education decision? It overturned segregation in schools. Prior to thst ruling, black children had to attend separate schools just for blacks. The justification was "we'll give them a separate but equal education." (Which, incidentally, was a laugh.)

But the underlying message in that separate but equal concept was the same: "You're not as good as we are." And, "You can't join our club."

All I need to do to make your argument read the same as the "separate but equal" southern state bullshit from back in the day is to take out "gay" and insert "colored" or "negro."

And NO: Civil unions for gays don't carry the same legal rights and tax exemptions as those for hetero couples. And most states don't have any provision for gay parnterships at all. But nevermind, looks like you like your head firmly up in your own behind, cheers ^_~

Diego, I don't know why so many insist on behaving like lower brain mammals. Jefferson himself was frustrated with the whole South who walked out during the signing of The Declaration of Independence because Jefferson had included in it a clause to abolish slavery. Some changes take a long time. Someday it will be as unacceptable to bash gays as it is to be an apologist for slavery.

The sad thing is that most of the time the majority are bigots in some way or another. I'm not sure why that is, but the whole point is that the minority is different somehow and that freaks out the majority because they've come to believe their way is the only normal way. Change is hard for them. That's why leaving the issues of rights and freedoms to the voting majority is a scary thing.

I love that quote. And this one.

"The majority, oppressing an individual, is guilty of a crime, abuses its strength, and by acting on the law of the strongest breaks up the foundations of society." --Thomas Jefferson

Diego,

You are absolutely right! Excellent quote and thank you for sharing it. Throughout history, civil rights court rulings have, in fact, run contrary to the wishes of the majority. Thank goodness our democracy is designed to protect the rights of the minority from the tyranny of the majority. I wonder if those who say otherwise would really like to subject themselves to mob rule?

Why? Why do I have to accept this vote? Would you have said the same thing if the issue was segregation or interracial marriage or the rights of women to vote? Should we have let the majority decide those things? Jim Crow Laws, anyone?

"Bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal laws must protect, and to violate would be oppression." --Thomas Jefferson

http://daywithoutagay.org/

Phoebe's picture

Democracy isn't always perfect, but we have to stand by the process and agree that the majority vote is the way to go.

Overturn it by another vote, fine, but we can't just take away the results.

If we say not enough people voted so it wasn't a true majority, that's the way it goes. If people wanted to be heard, they needed to vote.

That's just my opinion on the general process. On the gay marriage thing, I think "civil unions" covers it, but if people want the word "marriage" it's fine by me.

I don't like Dlisted Bible study - I'm Catholic and we don't do the Bible. If this is going to be a regular thing, I'll have to go buy one. Could someone let me know?

We were always taught that Jesus was more of a big-picture kind of guy (the Golden Rule) rather than so much into the details of daily life.

The Crusades, the witch trials, slavery, the oppression of women. And that's not even taking into consideration the murders and torture that's taken place on an individual basis.

And as far as Leviticus is concerned . . . yeah, live by that jackassery. See how far you get. I guess it's pretty handy for bigots seeing as how it tells you what kind of slaves to keep and how to bang your slave girls and still stay within the laws. So go on and buy yourself a slave or two. That's what I call creativity. Maybe there should be some psych studies done where they examine how long the church speeches linger in a person's mind when they make subsequent decisions. Like 1 day, 2 days, 3 days etc after church. And then politicians should pick the correct day and set the elections at that day the next time. I wonder if the NIH would fund such a study...

The Old Testament is a horrid book although homosexuals - surprisingly - avoided out right damnation.

Leviticus is written for none but the most hardcore of Jewish persons. As means of an analogy, consider the Christian Priest who must live by different rules than those that the common person must abide to. The same principle applies with the laws of Leviticus.

I am not a Christian nor a Jew, and my knowledge of both religions is modest.

dnnygirl,

Read my original post again. I asked for citations in Hebrew. I am completely uninterested in self-serving translations of ambiguous texts by people who believe themselves to be the idols of religious worship rather than the subservient worshipers of their supposed God.

I can only assume that your failing to appreciate translation is rooted in your ignorance.

Convert to Hinduism immediately. Hindi translations have the good grace not to compromise the meaning of the original documents by forcing awkward English translations for people who are too lazy to learn a handful of foreign words. You may also learn something about the origins of Jesus.

Don't jump on other posters just because they don't agree with you. Just because someone is against gay marriage doesn't make them a dumbass, it just means they have a different point of view.

Absolutely true. I wouldn't jump on anyone for simply having a different point of view. You'll find that this is only happening to posters who jump in and say that WE are the dumbasses for discussing things the way we do. Perhaps if they had a different approach...

I love all of you hos on here but I do think it's hypocritical of you to be wanting equality for gays but won't allow equality for people that don't agree with that.

....I'm sorry! You are right. Let's please pass a law to stop idiots and bigots from marrying too.....and also add an amendment about reproducing because that shit is just intolerable.

I'm always amazed at what people will tell you when they've got enough whiskey in them. I'm not big into porn, but I have dropped by the cockyboys website once or twice. You know, just cause I was curious.

Yeah, I have no problem not giving a shit what a bigot thinks. They have the right to hate me and think I'm going to hell all they want, but when they start taking my rights away? Then there's a problem and I don't see any reason to tolerate letting someone make me less of a person because of some bogus religious belief. Letting the majority decide what rights the minority gets has never worked. I'm all for the courts turning this shit over because as long as the majority, no matter how small, is full of hate then nothing gets accomplished. My rights shouldn't be voted on by people who are ignorant of the facts.

I love all of you hos on here but I do think it's hypocritical of you to be wanting equality for gays but won't allow equality for people that don't agree with that. They put it up for a vote and the majority (although a small percentage) voted against it. If this country is to truly be equal you have to respect the outcome of the vote and realize people don't agree. Don't jump on other posters just because they don't agree with you. Just because someone is against gay marriage doesn't make them a dumbass, it just means they have a different point of view. You can respectfully and intelligently disagree instead of calling names. And I for one am very thankful that not everyone thinks the same AND that we're legally allowed to express it.
