Mrs. Rojo On Larry King!

Joy Behar filled in for Larry King last night, he was off hunting for the souls of children, and she had the unofficial Mrs. Rojo Caliente on her show to talk about the gay marriage ban. I've been majorly strung out, looking for a Rojo fix, so this helped to ease the pain. I watched it last night, focusing on Mrs. Rojo's lips and thinking, "those things have felt the heat of The Rojo!" I'm jealous. On a serious note, Mrs. Rojo is smart in the brains and made some good points.

Also, in a few minutes a huge National protest against Prop 8 begins in every state. Run your ass over there now! And look hot, because there's going to be cameras. Click here to get info for the nearest rally if you're interested in going.

lizardbits: Exactly. I went to an evangelical Christian school for 8 years and we studied the Bible every day. They were the 700 Club variety; country club evangelicals, if you can imagine.

It's funny (or not so funny) how quickly they can get lathered up about something like Harry Potter or "The Simpsons".

They were really crazy against pop music, too. They called it "secular" music. Aside from the filthy perverted lyrics about sex and drugs and Satan, the rhythms were meant to lure young people into having - gasp - carnal feelings. THat's why it's called "Rock and Roll" - because of the motions bodies make when sinning. (A teacher actually said that. It had never occurred to me before, but those words conjured up all sorts of naughty thoughts.)

Nevermind that the "Christian" music used the same instruments and rhythms as "secular" music. But the words were glorfying God, so it was okay.

Or some such hypocrisy.

I hate how black people somehow got linked in to all this gan sh*t. People are saying how can such a high percentage of black peeps for for the ban when they've suffered oppresion so long....they must be horrible...just aweful things..
`````````
well it's true. I don't understand how so many can be for the ban. It makes no sense.
In heaven, all the interesting people are missing.
You know what makes me sad. The idea that the same people who would show up at a march to free black folks from second citizenship in the 60's would spit on the idea of showing up to free gays and lesbians from the same shit in 2008.
Inequality in the world's "greatest nation" is absurb, ridiculous, heartbreaking, and foremost unconstitutional. If all men are equal then what the hell is this bullshit? I'll tell you. It's a bunch of folks holding on to their power. They can't treat any other minority like shit anymore without someone slapping them down except for gays and lesbians because they are the only group left on the planet that everyone can rally their hate around and not be pegged a bigot.
As a black woman that scares me because yes we elected Obama but what does it mean when a black man can be the leader of the United States and yet we still are denying civil rights to a whole community of our own citizens.
If it's true that "God don't like ugly" then I assume that God right this minute is trying to figure out a way to Botox and lypo this whole nation.
Prop 8 is all about pandering to some of our worst human tendencies: sanctimony, superstition, bigotry, and scapegoating. And religion, at its worst, is just a vessel for these tendencies.
......................................................
It's ironic that in its quest for immortality, religion itself may lead to our extinction.
You're welcome, love!
And for the poster who was talking about christians being against female ministers...my grandparents were married by a female minister back in 1936. So even way back then, there were christians who didn't have a problem with it. By the way, they had her remarry them when they renewed their vows for their 25th wedding in 1961. My hope is that I will be able to witness gays and lesbians celebrating 25-year wedding anniversaries during my lifetime!
la coocaracha, I read a very intersting article that said during Jesus' time here on earth, there was a reason he said "turn the other cheek". One historian explained that at the time if someone slapped your cheek once, it was a form of punishment for slaves. But Jesus being a rebel told his followers that if you are slapped once on the cheek, turn your head and allow yourself to be slapped on the other cheek. This would be a signal that A) you are not anyone's slave and B) you are standing up and challenging the person. Because two slaps was a challenge or confrontation between two equals. Very interseting theory.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I don't understand how people can be against same sex marriage, in Canada same sex marriage is legal. When the Prime Minister tried to reopen the debate he was shot down 175-123, just as he should have been. Saying that it's sad that 123 votes went to dark side, still too many.
The real thing that freaks me out though is that when America was formed the four father tried to keep religion out of politics, so why is it that Christianity seems to consume politics now in America. It's just unreal to me.
Good for you! I'm personally not religious, but I have complete respect for those who are (minus the ones who oppose equal rights for everyone) and I applaud you for your bravery in saying so. Some of the best, most wonderful and proactive people I have ever known have been christians (including two people whose characters will never be lived up to by anyone else I will ever know as long as I live, the people who raised me) and I despise people who have blind hatred toward others who are truly trying to be good people through their religions.
Just wanted to let you know that not everyone here is so close-minded and disrespectful. The concept of being open-minded has to go both ways. I've said it here before and I'll say it again: my grandparents took in a young man from Papua New Guinea during the mid-1960s, and greatly assisted him in getting his degree from USC. To the world, he looked like a black man, and so many people thought my grandparents were crazy. This man graduated and became a doctor; he now lives in Canada but he kept in touch with them until they died. My grandparents always said religion was about helping others. To me, this was a great contribution toward the civil rights movement. I'm sure they would regret the fact that I do not practice, but at least I know that others out there practice their religions in the same good faith.
And another thing I've always been dying to know about hardcore Christians who live and die by the bible (not meaning that in a disrespectful way honest!) how do you feel about Jesus being born a Jew, living as a Jew, dying as a Jew? And really just wanting people to be better Jews?
With all due respect, it doesn't matter WHAT the Bible says, because it's all open to individual interpretation. Three people could watch the same episode of Spongebob Squarepants and come away with three different lessons.
The Bible has NOT ONE THING to do with this; it's a LEGAL issue. I suppose it's an ethical issue, too, since basic human rights are involved. If someone opposing gay marriage has an argument with a FACTUAL or legal or even ethical basis, I'm all ears and open mind.
Jesus himself never mentions gay marriage in the Bible. Not once. Also Bible passages at one time were also used to support slavery, and teaches us that women are second class citizens. If you don't listen to your husband he will cast you off and create Eve. Just the fact that God has a Son and not a Daughter is one reason the Bible can kiss my ass. The reality is we are all children of "God" and deserve equal civil liberties. The Bible should have little to do with the creation of laws here in the United States. As long as 2 people in love are not hurting you or me, are over the age 18, and paying taxes like the rest of us, they deserve the same rights. God Bless 'Merica
Something else that I find intriguing is that the singulat Bible actually consist of two books- the Old and New Testements- which both teach 2 very different philosphies...one says eye for and eye, the other turn the other cheek for example. And more ignorance. Try reading the Bible and understanding the context of the laws and rules. Temple prostitution was a huge problem because it was a pagan ritual. Obviously, that's not good when it comes to Christianity. But I suppose you're ok with women not preaching in churches? Not even speaking in churches? Or did you not have a problem when that rule was 'overruled'? What about keeping slaves? Hell, what about cutting your hair, wearing pants, eating shellfish, and forcing rape victims to marry their attackers? You ok with us overrruling all that?
And don't even get me started on David and Jonathan. They clearly got it on and God loved Him some David. Try reading some history and understanding the times the Bible was written in. Then go check out Gilgamesh and Enkidu, Achilles and Patroclus, and Alexander and Hephaestion. You can quote the Bible all you want, but arguing with history and science just makes you look like a jackass.
Tolerance means tolerance--not selective tolerance or tolerance only for those who believe as you do. That applies to Christians, gays, and everyone else.
Exactly. Giving women the vote didn't take it away from men. Giving black people the vote didn't take it away from whites. Giving gays the same rights to marry takes nothing away from straight marriage. There is no argument that makes any sense to me.
I am fiercely pro-choice, but I understand why people might want to stop abortion. I don't AGREE, but I understand where they are coming from. I just DO NOT understand why people oppose gay rights.
Cici, you're absolutely right when you say: "I think the real issue here is that homosexuals want to overrule the teachings of Christianity and other religions towards this matter."
It's not just the religions, it's the laws that need to be changed too. That's what the goal is.
Personally I find the comparisons to slavery to be valid (this isn't nearly as bad, no way to that, but in other ways).
Every person is entitled to basic human rights and they are entitled to be treated equally under the law. Regardless of sexual orientation, gender, health or religion.
How sad that people are still arguing about basic human rights.
