John Travolta's 16-Year-Old Son Has Died

I am a zillion light years late with this, but I was traveling back from California to NYC for most of today. I know I just disappeared. I figured I'd write a note to you bitches in the terminal, but Long Beach Airport's janky ass internet was not cooperating, so I had to nix it. But here's the story. Skip it if you've heard it a million times already.

John Travolta and Kelly Preston's 16-year-old son, Jett, died in the Bahamas while he was on vacation with his family. Jett was last seen going into the bathroom in one his family's suites at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel last night. His body wasn't discovered until 10 this morning by his caretaker, Jeff Michael Kathrein. Jeff is the blondie in the picture below and he was also caught kissing on John Travolta back in 2006.

TMZ says that the police report states Jett suffered a seizure and hit his head on the bathtub. John's attorney said his son died at the scene after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. His attorney also said that Jett had a history of seizures.

There were rumors that Jett was Autistic, but John has always denied this and even threatened to sue over it. John said Jett had Kawasaki Syndrome, a disorder that can lead to heart disease. Kelly Preston later blamed household cleaners for all of Jett's health problems. She said one of L. Ron Hubbard's detoxification programs helped Jett.

An autopsy is being performed on Jett to find the exact cause of death.

I'll admit that when I first heard about this, the word "Scientology" came at me in big evil letters, but we won't know anything until the autopsy. When I was on the plane, the women behind me were watching this story on Larry King and totally saying all this crazy shit. People were totally giving them the side-eye. They should've wrote this post. All I know is that this sad all around and I will leave it at that.

Admittedly, my knowledge of autism is limited. I was watching an excellent unflinching documentary about autistic children and their families. Some autistic children go through periods where they only sleep for 2 hours per night. One woman's daughter flooded the house because she tried to run a bath for herself. The parents exhaust themselves, sleeping in shifts.

I'm just saying that it's possible that Jett really DID need to have around-the-clock supervision. He was NOT a typical 16 year old.

If the Travoltas "religious beliefs" kept them from obtaining care for their son or even acknowledging his diagnosis then damn fucking right they are going to be called into question.

I am an atheist and think ALL religions are shams. That said Scientology is one of the worst cults imaginable. The fact that a set of beliefs would keep you from helping your child is criminal. The Travoltas claim that Jett had Kawasaki syndrome from cleaning chemicals. Kawasaki syndrome is an inflammatory blood vessel disorder that can lead to heart problems. It is generally curable when the child is young. It does not lead to the kind of developmental delay that is obvious in Jett's behavior in videos, plus the fact that the Travoltas spoke freely of Ella but tossed off Jett with a "he's fine." They also had him undergo some sort of detoxification program at the Church of Scientology. Since when are these people doctors? Oh, right, I forgot, vitamins and exercise can cure postpartim depression.

Whether Jett was autistic or not, his problems were in some way brain damage related, and his family chose to hide that. Instead of helping to remove the stigma and shame from mental disoders and brain damage, they swept it under the rug and chose not to speak of it in public. I think that behavior is shameful and I will call the Travoltas on it.

You better watch out, you better not cry.

Weirdness. All the way around.
Attempts to revive him? Um, last seen..when? Found..when?
What's with the Bahamas and kids dying? Not that Anna Nicole's son was a saint, but isn't that where he died as well?
Actually that is a coincidence, I'm sure. Just wondering about the attempts to revive..wtf?
Condolences to those who actually cared about this child.
RIP Jett

Was this child on medication for his seizures? He's the same age as my son. Very, very sad.

It is devastating for a parent to have a child with unresolvable disabilities. So many dreams go out the window. The hands-on job that you thought was going to last for 20 years turns out to be a life time of worry and plain not being able to let go. Despite the fact that there seems to be a degree of secrecy and maybe even shame surrounding this child, no one knows the extent of the boy's disability. One thing I do know - you try to strive for independence and growth where possible, not babying. Given the facts that I think I know, I would've been a little more watchful. I would've at least made sure that the boy was in bed before I went to bed, and maybe they did. We don't know. All I do know is that a child's death is devastating and I wish the Travoltas and Jett peace.

This is so sad and truly shocking. My biggest sympathies to the Travolta family.Losing a child has to be the worst thing to have happen to someone.

Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before.

Jem's picture

oops. *Travolta, not Travolva! obviously :)

Jem's picture

I also can't see any reason for alarm over the fact that he was left alone overnight. Kudos to the person who said we have no idea how bad his disability is. This wasn't really a "kid", he was 16. Well old enough to be left by himself at night, especially if his parents just let him have his own suite or whatever because he wanted it. It's not as if we can claim that he has seizures every night or whatever. I have no idea the details of what happened, but without knowing, it sounds to me like a freak horrible incident that every parent dreads. Much love to the Travolva family either way, I'm sure there will be many "what ifs" in their minds right now and it will be hard enough for any parent to lose their child without people worldwide judging over what you did wrong to cause it.

10pm is a reasonable time to assume that someone would be asleep in bed. Checking on them in the morning is fairly logical. This appears, from the information presented, to be an accident with very sad consequences.

I can only imagine John Travolta feels quite helpless right now. It is your duty as a parent to protect your children from all harm, but there are some things which just happen.

Sympathies to the Travolta family.

Accidents, by their very nature, cannot be avoided.

--thanks awfully--

miffed_33's picture

I was just thinking just because he was last seen going into the bathroom the night before doesn't mean it happened that night, if everyone else has gone to bed he may have left the bathroom, unseen and gone to bed also. Then when he woke the next morning he has gone for his morning tinkle and has slipped, fallen and seizured and that is why he was found at that time and why he passed then?????

Just aweful! This is about nothing but parents and a family losing a child.

I can't imagine a worse situation for a family to be in.

Rest in peace.

I don't think the fact no one saw him from 10pm until the next morning is really all that shocking or completely unreasonable. We don't know the situation. It wasn't exactly early in the evening and the caretaker could have fell asleep after he went into the bathroom and found him when he woke up the next morning. Or the Travoltas may have felt he was safe and stable enough to have his own suite with the caretaker checking up on him periodicly. We don't know the extent this kid was incapacitated and whether or not he was capable of staying in his own room overnight. I'm sure when they are at home the Travolta's don't have a bodyguard sitting by his bed all night to watch him if he gets up to use the bathroom. In my opinion the real concern is whether or not the Travolta's had real, professional ongoing medical help for this kid including medications. I doubt it. He was most likely treated at the Scientology Center regularly for his illnesses.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. There's a whole lot of judging going on here, a lot of it based on wild speculation. The bottom line is we don't know the details yet of what happened to Jett Travolta. What we do know is that they're parents and they've just lost a child.

So basically Jett died all alone without anyone being with him for hours.

Initially I am sorry for the Travoltas in losing a son, but I can't help but be perplexed as to why let your religion dictate what could not be the true diagnosis for their child.

Jett is at peace now and no longer limited by his disabilities here on earth.

I was hoping this story wouldn't bring all the assholes out of the woodwork but of course it did. I am from one of Travolta's hometowns and have never heard anything but good about them all. It is apparent that they are a close family and the children are very loved.
I don't care if they worship a fucking turd. All religions are weird and the most evil person I know is my 80 year old never-miss-a-day-of-church-in-her-life grandmother who is a life long child abuser among other things. If you use religion in your life to become a better person, whatever religion, then good for you.
People who choose to spew hate for someone based on their religious beliefs at the worst time a human could ever go through in life, well you don't have much humanity in you.

I just think it's sad how everyone is assuming how he died...we don't even know all the facts yet. I know the Travolta's aren't liked much- but to come here and say that because they are scientologists, Jett is dead, or that Kelly didn't love him very much or that he was hidden from the world, or blah, blah, blah. None of you know anything about their personal life. I'm fairly certain that John and Kelly loved that little boy as much as any other parent and are completely heart broken right now. For such mean things to be written is just wrong. MK new when to not say anything, why don't y'all take the same fucking lead.
RIP Jett!

'Mornin Sugaroo... I gotta run out to deposit some checks in the bank... Catch up w/ U later?

If someone saw him going into the bathroom, did they not notice that he didn't come out...sooner that 12 hours later? And if that caregiver was there with them, what exactly was his job description...you would think that it would involve caring after him...meaning looking in on him...
No matter if there is blame to be laid, it is still very sad.

Agreed Hekki.

This is such a sad story. So young to die.

Hekki's picture

Okay, I've had time to digest this, and here's what I think (as if you all care): I think John loved that boy deeply.

As much as I despise the $cientos and love a good conspiracy theory, I don't think they killed him. I think his caretaker is responsible. While his parents should have been paying closer attention, if someone was paid to watch Jett (as there SHOULD have been), that person was not doing his job. Autistic children shouldn't be left alone, ever, from what I understand (but I'm no expert).

Dog forgive me for being judgmental, but... I think Kelly was conflicted about Jett. I can't say she didn't love Jett, but my overall impression was that she wasn't dealing well with his illness and that it annoyed/embarassed her. Just a vibe I got, and it's probably not appropriate for me to even express it. But I think John loved him very much and is heartbroken.

This is so sad to me. This was a neglected child, at the very least, and closer to abused, in my opinion. The hell of it is, nothing will happen to the Travoltas or the COS.

There is something extremely suspect about the fact that he was not discovered for so damn long...and the caretaker (JT's lover) was the one to find him.

I hope JT rots in hell for this.

Sad news. Never felt Jett was hidden from the public, I do recall seeing this boy a lot with John. He fondly remember he looked like a little wolf boy with his jet black hair. He was a odd little kid in cute way. He kind of grew on me since I have a son the same age.

I know alot of folks, myself included, think there is something strange about the circumstances. Unfortunately, I predict this will all be swept under the rug to protect the Travoltas. there are other religions besides scientology where parents do shit like this to their kids and get charged with negligent homicide. I don't know what kind of power the COS has over government and our law enforcement, but it's creepy!

The Scientology organization is extremely wealthy, powerful and enormously litigious. They have very high powered attorneys and endless funds they will gladly spend to defend themselves relentlessly. Even the IRS backs off them. I would be very suprised if anything comes of this.

I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word of this. This boy has been hidden for years, is clearly a source of embarrassment and shame to his parents- either because as Hollywood types their children must be perfect or, more likely due to the bogus hateful beliefs of their cult and now dies it what at most charitably described as ‘odd’ circumstances. This, from Wikipedia is one of the things these cretins put their faith in:

Cause Resurgence Rundown
Also known as the "running program," the CRRD involves running circles around a pole 12 hours a day, for several days, while taking mineral supplements. The program is administered to people believed to have become "PDH," or brainwashed against Scientology, to rid them of negative thoughts.

I wonder what the cure for the autism he apparently didn’t have was?
