You know, I'm really upset with my 5-year-old self for not being smart enough to keep all my Cabbage Patch dolls in their original boxes. I could have sold that shit on eBay and pursued my dreams of becoming a bar girl in Thailand. Wait. Scratch that. I just looked up some 80s Cabbage Patch dolls on eBay and those things don't sell for shit! Okay, I'm not mad at my 5-year-old self.

No kidding. Since Wednesday 2 different factories in my hometown have closed their doors, and Goody's (pretty much the only place to buy clothes there besides Wal-Mart) is liquidating and will be closed in a month. So that's about 500 jobs lost so far in 2009 (in a town of 10,000). This, coming about 2 years after they gave Honda a HUGE tax incentive to build a new factory in our state because it was supposed to save the town by creating thousands of new jobs. Yeah, that worked out well... and for the first time in decades, it's not just the warm bodies and temps getting laid off, but the accountants and upper-level management too.
It is getting scarier every day. My husband works in retail and told me that the payroll for his store has exceeded their daily sales every day this week. And they just fired almost half their salespeople! I think his job is safe, for now, but you can never be sure. I hope it is, because I am almost positive we are going to have to help out a few family members soon.
