Patrick Swayze Has Gone Into The Hospital
Shitty news for a Friday afternoon. Patrick Swayze was hospitalized for pneumonia. Ugh. I hate pneumonia. I even hate the name.
Patrick was scheduled to attend an event at the Television Critics Association in Los Angeles today for his new show The Beast. A&E's president told reporters, "Patrick Swayze has checked himself into the hospital. However, he asked us specifically to go forward with today's panel. We wish him the very best with his recovery."
Patrick, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, recently told Barbara Walters in an interview that he's going through hell. And now this. 2009 was supposed to be better.
Send a million and more good thoughts to Patrick....

He probably still smokes because he knows he's going to die anyone so he may as well go out happy rather than miserable. That said, I'm sure he'll be dead by Monday. Never liked him as an actor anyway. He was good for a few butt shots early in his career and that's pretty much it.

Well. I just hope someone gives you an equally sweet eulogy someday. Soon.
Oh-- and I see the opinion police are in full swing again. When exactly did we vote in the site mother? I don't recall casting a ballot, personally.
damn
for people with terminal illnesses catching pneumonia pretty much means death is at your doorstep.

If this stuff doesn't say it about Patrick Swayze... nothing does, or ever will. This is from the interview done with the makers and actors promoting The Beast, that Patrick could not attend because he is in the hospital:
TCA Press Tour: 'Beast' makers talk about Patrick Swayze
09:06 AM PT, Jan 10 2009
Just two days after viewers watched Patrick Swayze tell Barbara Walters during an ABC interview that he's "been going through hell and I've only seen the beginning of it," the actor checked himself into the hospital to be treated for pneumonia.
Swayze, who has been fighting stage 4 pancreatic cancer for the last year, is the star of a new A&E series, "The Beast," which premieres on Jan. 15. Swazye was diagnosed after he had shot the pilot. The illness kept him from attending the press tour on Friday to promote the drama with his co-star Travis Fimmel ("Tarzan") and the writers and producers of the show.
''One thing I'm not gonna do is chase staying alive,'' Swayze told Barbara Walters in his first interview since the diagnosis. ''You spend so much time chasing staying alive, you won't live.''
His colleagues attested to that, and a lot more, during a Q&A with the TV press. The following are excerpts (questions are paraphrased) of comments by "The Beast" co-creators William Rotko and Vincent Angell; show runner John Romano; pilot director Michael Dinner; and Fimmel.
Q: In light of today's sad news, where is your head at today?
Fimmel: It's just been an absolute inspiration for me and I'm sure the other guys. He's an amazing guy. You can't help but to respect him. And I can't say enough good stuff about the guy. He's an inspiration. He makes a little thing seem so not important.
Angell: We would, you know, as hard as it is to imagine, you forget about it when you're working hours a day and you're on the set with him and, you know, usually most of us would get tired before he would.... And in light of the news today, it's just, I think for him, a bump in the road. You know, he had a little sniffle, as he said on "Barbara Walters," you know, when we were shooting, and he missed a day of work. But I think it's, you know, like I said, a bump in the road and we're all wishing him well.
Q: A lot of people who have seen the show think it's one of his best performances. Do you think those challenges brought out something different in him as an artist?
Romano: Everybody who writes, produces, directs the show, they're aware that he is bringing the force of his own personal struggle into that performance. That's what you're seeing. And when you say how good his performance is, you're seeing what we see. And all of us who write and do the show, we work in the shadow of a tremendous act of courage. And you probably feel a little this morning when you heard that he couldn't show up this morning, as much as he wanted to. That's how we do the show, but he does it five days a week, 12 hours a day. Directors like Michael drive you crazy in the middle of the night in lousy weather. Patrick loves putting it up there. And, yes, that's the source of it, and I think you're sniffing that out. It's the truth.
Q: After he was diagnosed, did you consider making the show with a different actor?
Rotko: The answer's no. When we found out Patrick had cancer, you know, it was four hours after we found out we got picked up. Then we dealt with the issue of Patrick. From the moment Patrick found out he had cancer, from the first phone calls with some of the Sony executives that are present today, he said, "I'm going to do this show." And I think you probably -- if you all watched the Barbara Walters special, you see the type of cowboy personality that he has, and that was his approach, and we immediately glommed on to that. We never considered another actor for the part.
Q: Can the show continue with a second season even if Patrick is unable to work? (Production on the first season is complete.)
Romano: Believe it or not, we have experienced mornings like this in the making of the show. So for
us, we have nothing before us that says that we just can't continue making the show we're making starring Patrick Swayze and Travis Fimmel. We're all aware how the show may need to grow around him. My feeling is that, as I said, we're talking our cues from Patrick, and I gotta tell you, the only rough conversations I ever have with Patrick is when he reads a script and says, "Are you writing me down? I'm not climbing enough walls in this episode. Do you think I can't do it?"
Q: Travis, when you work with Patrick, can you see the physical strain?
Fimmel: No. As I say, you can hardly tell with the guy. He's such a man, you know. The sickest thing about him on the set is probably his jokes.

What an incredible man. It was so wonderful to hear his peers talk about him in the way that he so deserves. GODSPEED Patrick!!!!

I just watched the Barbara Walter's interview of Patrick Swayze on YouTube. I cried during the parts of the interview with his wife. They are definitely soulmates and lucky to have each other. They are a class act. The interview is very inspiring and made me cry (especially parts 4 and 5).
I dissed on Patrick earlier for continuing to smoke while ill with the same disease that killed my father within a week of his diagnosis, but I can see the train of thought that he knows he's going to die and chooses to keep smoking anyway because there's no prolonging his life at this point. I smoked for about 20 years, quit when I got pregnant 17 years ago, and now on the holidays when I see my in-laws I smoke the tobacco-free herbals. They are still bad for you, will still give you cancer, but don't flare up (pun!) my nicotine addiction again like would happen if I smoked traditional tobacco cigarettes.
All that said, if I live to be 90 I'm gonna take up smoking again. If you see a crazy old lady smoking and crocheting while watching old movies and drinking coffee, that will be me.
I hope Patrick doesn't die soon, but doubt he has much longer to live. This disease is a bastard.

I'm really praying for a miracle for him, and others like him, that a cure be found or that the strength they have within them beats this cancer. He is a good man, and many good people die from this horrible disease, but knowing his work and see how he is a fighter in the public eye makes me sad to think his time is short on this earth. God bless his family and his spirit for staying positive.
I just saw scenes from his show The Beast, and in my opinion, he still is very handsome and has that rugged sex appeal. I sure hope he gets better---He just seems like a nice guy, who you never really heard bad things about.
judging by the picture i thought you were going to say he OD'd on fake tanning lotion.
GODDAMN that fucking cancer.
I saw the Barbara Walter's interview the other night.
I have always liked him and wish him the best.
He has a certain "look" about his eyes, though, and that does not bode well.
:-((
I hope he's getting the really good drugs there in the hospital. Morphine, demerol, all those opiates. Rest well dude; I hope you can get the hell outta that hospital alive.
Am in Chicago and lot of the series was filmed in my immediate neighborhood...saw him once or twice over the summer. Was always friendly and down to earth. So genuine and sincere, love him, love his contributions....I hope people let this play out peacefully and dignified
Our prayers are with you and your family.

I just thought about him in "Ghost", where he played someone who was dead.
I always considered Patrick Swayze the epitome of health when he was in Dirty Dancing and in Roadhouse. I'm surprised he ever picked up the smoking habit or started drinking. His mom lives and owns a dance studio in the city I live in. He practiced a lot there---I'm sure it's devastating for his family.
Keep fighting, Patrick. We're all pulling for you...
This isn't good news. I don't think he's going to make it through this time... *cries*

I need a new pair of panties just thinking about this.
my dad was a 2 pack a day smoker and smoked until the day he died (he died of prostate cancer). a few months before he died i went to visit him and asked him why he wouldn't stop smoking and he said to me "i'm going to die anyway so what the hell?". deep down i think partrick knows he's dying and just wants to die the way he wants: with his wife in one hand and his ciggie in another.
my best wishes to him and his family.

Damn. I was surprised he's hung on this long...pancreatic cancer is usually caught late and the victims only last a few months at best.
This is NOT good news. All the best to Patrick and his family.
Fuck...

I apologize if this was already discussed, but he said he's still smoking (today), that smoking "possibly" contributed to his cancer, but that he had cut way back.

Oh man... this is not good. I'm really hoping he makes it but I've got a bad feeling.

Exactly the same thing I was thinking. Pancreatic cancer is VERY aggressive and the survival rate is extremely low. And Patrick hasn't been looking good lately, so if he went ahead and checked himself into the hospital....

Get well, Patrick. We still need that Road House sequel.

I think it's impossible to say what will prolong your life or keep you healthy and what won't. It's a combination of things. My grand-uncle smoked from the time he was 8 to 88 and he just died of old age. That said -- genetics, diet, even the difference between present-day cigarettes and the older kinds must play a role. I think, though, that adding smoking to the American combination of an overprocessed, high fat/sugar diet and a largely sedentary lifestyle is pretty toxic.

I'm glad your mother and step-father were able to find happiness and peace in their choices and decisions. For me, though, it's about widening my definition of what I mean by "quality" and "enjoyment." Because, yes, I enjoy smoking on the patio but I also enjoy drinking tea out there. So if a doctor told me I had to change a lifestyle I so enjoyed in order to live longer, I would... and believe me, I would figure out a way actually to enjoy the added years.
Smoking is your choice but it is NOT other people's choice to die of YOUR carcinogens. Said me, the former smoker LOL

I'm a smoker. A smoker who hasn't smoked in 3 or so months because I'm trying to become a non-smoker. That said, Patrick Swayze needs to stop. Whether he can or will is another story. I wish him all the best. People with vices don't deserve hardship or illness, but in so many cases it's cause/effect. The sad thing is they know this and still can't embrace the option that would be better for them. Oh, well. I have to keep telling myself one day I'll have a smoke and a cup of coffee again. Sorta the way I keep telling myself I'll see my mom again (she passed). Hopefully, though, both will happen when I myself have died -- because one would be bad for my health and the other would *freak* me out!

Get over yourselves, Type A personalities.
You may not smoke, but you WILL die.
Maybe sooner than you think.
People who freak out about cigs are usually people whose parents have died of lung cancer and they are feeling low because their parents chose cigs over them.
Get over it, your parents had their destiny, you will have yours, and cigs are legal.
Your parents certainly enjoyed theirs.
Here's a thing on 3rd hand smoke:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/03/health/research/03smoke.html?em
This is pretty much a duh moment but most people don't think about the carcinogens staying on their clothing, hair, etc. I have always thought that and this just confirms it. It's incredibly selfish to risk other people's health because you want a fix. I will never smoke again. It's simply not worth it.

I saw a piece on 3rd hand smoke on tv. Why anyone would choose to still smoke is beyond me. I always nag my husband & tell him "quit why you still have the choice". People can be so dumb. Also tobacco companies put amazingly toxic shit in cigs, far beyond anything nicotine can do. It should be illegal. Still, people know this so DON'T SMOKE. Duh. Hope Patrick kicks the cancer in it's ugly ass. He will always be Johnny to me:)

I don't see anything on here about Patrick also being an admitted alcoholic. One of the reasons he and Lisa never had children. Just like cigarettes, he never quit, though, instead saying that he "limits" his alcohol intake.
Yeah, shame on me for pointing out risk factors in his tragic and incredibly painful demise, but it shows our heros are human too and sometimes our life choices can damn well matter.
Hopefully, he knows how much people adore him. :-) He was completely adorable in Dirty Dancing. There is nothing sexier than a manly man who can dance.
I am sorry for the loss of your mother Mahaatma, at least she died with a smile on her face. Smoking kills. What else do you have to know. Smoking kills and not all of us die at the age of 100 in our beds. Just saying.
I watched this interview the other night and bawled like a baby. He's quite circumspect about his life and his death. Classy guy and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his wife and I'm certain that he'll be all right no matter which direction his life takes.
