i do that in the summer for my doggie. he fishes them out of the water bowl and races around while he hold them in his mouth until it gets too cold and he has to spit it on the floor. pretty funny.

When it's really hot outside and the house is hard to cool down, I put large ice cubes in my kitteh's water bowl as a treat. Maybe your kitteh would appreciate ice water for his inflamed gums, hair? Take them out before they get too small so they won't be a choking hazard, though.

it's not like wet food is really bad for them, just that crunchy food keeps their teeth strong and clean, and somehow the wet is not great for their gums. but i'm sure that at 4-5 month dry kitty chow is perfectly fine.

That's interesting. I was starting to think I had done a bad thing and put him kitten chow too soon. We left him with wet food before we left, not knowing what was going on or when we'd be able to get him to the vet. There is only ONE in town I trust. Can I tell you? I have to drive 10 miles home to pick him up, 10 miles to the vet, and 10 miles back home.
If he's teething, is it normal for the mouth to have a foul-ish smell? It's not strong foul, but it does kinda make me think of infection-y smell.

for future visits, my vet sells very sturdy cardboard cat carriers for ten bucks, they're re-usable.
if there's no pus involved, i'd say, yeah, teething. that would make him crabby too.

Oh great. So I'm gonna end up spending $50 for a visit? If that's all it is and he doesn't need medication, then I'll get him his shots. Bad day for kitteh! I swear I think I might have to buy some falconry gloves or something to take him in. He's a very loveable cat, but I don't know how he's going to do in the car today. The only other time he was in a car was when he was 6 weeks old. Today he grabbed hold of my hand and rabbit punched the back of it. He's a mean cracker. Maybe it IS because he's been teething.

Angel_i and Hoff - is that what teething would look like? at 4 mos? It does appear to be occurring only on the back teeth - even on both sides. I'm thinking I put him on dry food too soon AND his teet were having difficulty pushing through.
HE BITES LIKE A SON OF A BEACH, THOUGH. Maybe he is teething. The gums are so red and noticeably inflamed.

Nevamind. My KID had what I like to call "Hulkism". When she'd grow she would spend the whole night before feverish and writhing and moaning, but not waking and it would really freak me out but the next day she'd be fine but none of her clothes fit. And her teeth too - her nose ran, she'd be all feverish and tired....
That being said, if you're really worried you should see the vet, right? I did that the first couple times til I really knew what it was...her second year was a rough one but she's *knocks wood* super strong now.

Off-Topic: Gals, I need yer help. I was playing with my kitteh Ivan this morning and his breath smelled bad. I pulled back his whisker pad(s) and saw that his gums are TOTALLY RED. The teeth and gums in the front are ok. It's the tiny teeth in the back that are all red. He's 4-5mos old. He's been on wet food and had access to dry kitten chow for a couple months. It looks to me like either the kitten chow is too hard on his back teeth and has inflamed and possibly infected them. And/or his back teeth are having difficulty coming through. HAS ANYONE EVER EXPERIENCED THIS?
We're lucky, we have a vet appointment today at 2pm. I told the vet assistant that I want to have his gums treated before we do shots. If he has an infection it would seem to me that he would need to heal from that with antibiotics, then he can safely get his shots. Neutering will be done in late February.
Here's Ivan - he hasn't been lethargic (on the contrary!) or like he's in pain (although I realize he can't communicate that).
