Cookiepuss - I've not bothered to read through all these posts and haven't read the things you said of which Typhoid Mary speaks. What I said was not hilarious it was an accurate assessment of the way you were adressing someone else who works in the industry and knows as much about it all as you do. I wasn't asking anyone, particularly you a question, I was giving my view of the culture of bullying and insecurity in the television and film industry and my sympathy for the way this man was being publicly humiliated in front of the rest of the crew by an actor for fuck's sake, someone who wouldn't be capable of making a film if his life depended on it. There were so many inaccuracies and untruths concerning what people were assuming and saying about the "light guy" on the film that I had to keep stepping in.

You have to understand that not all sections of the industry are the same and what goes down in commercials (was it?) may not be the same as the protocol in tv drama, factual, you name it. I personally have a huge amount of sympathy for the guy in that tape as I've seen many a hard-working, hard-up professional - both low down in the pecking order and near the top - bullied, abused and threatened by the people wielding the power, be that execs, company heads or the so-called "talent". It wouldn't be accepted in any other industry and I don't see why people in the film world should have to put up with it. And I personally have never known anyone to take a production company to court to sue for unfair dismissal, constructive dismissal, harrassment, whatever. In theory they could do it and they may well win a small settlement but they would be blacklisted in the industry and would NEVER work again. That's how the Brit industry works, everyone knows everyone, its a very small, claustrophobic world. And you've got to have thick-skin and be utterly driven to survive.

As I said, I wasn't meaning any offense to you personally by what I said but you have to accept that you're not the only person with experience working in the industry posting here and your view of what is right and wrong as a Producer may not be the same as someone else's. In my role in the industry I tend to spend most of my time hiding from the monstrous egos of the Director/Cameraman/Exec/Production Manager etc who all think their way is the only way and nobody else knows shit. I was getting a little vibe of this from you that's all.

And as for Bale, well we all know he's far from the only Hollywood dick to pull this shit. Friends of mine edited the film American History X which if you are familiar with the story ended up being re-edited by Norton himself so he could beef his part up to get a best actor oscar nod. The Director took his name off the project in protest as did my friends with him. Turns out the end result was hardly any different to their work anyway so it was all total ego-clash nonsense. Anyway, just goes to show that no matter how high you climb you still have to deal with this shit so I for one am happy to be out of it for the timebeing. Peace out to all production staff!

Hey, Keane, I meant to give you a real answer to your real question. I did not mean to insult. DP's are covered under the Director's Guild which is a pretty powerful union. They make sure that people get paid and are treated with the same fair labor practices as the rest of us. There's a lot more that they do that make it pretty important if not critical to be a member if you want to keep working.

No union, though, can keep you from getting yelled at if that's what is on tap for the day. NOTHING can save you if someone hates your guts and works hard to ruin your reputation. Earlier in my career, I got screamed at and mistreated, sexually harassed and stiffed on my petty cash outlay. And this was on low budget indies!! There was nothing I could do but bite back my own tirade, choke back my tears and get through the job and vow NEVER to treat crew or co-workers that way when I got a bigger chair. And I never have. You may not like what I have to say here (I have no patience for hysterics) but you would LOVE me on set. I'm a sweetheart.

And Cookiepuss - reading back over your comment addressed to me, I'm assuming you work in the states as the union in the UK has never done shit for me or anyone else I know in the industry to prevent them from being bullied, exploited or fired unfairly. I actually have no idea what it is supposed to do for anyone at all. Maybe it does more for cameramen, sound technicians etc to make sure they get a fair wage and so on, rather than the Research/Producer side, who knows? In the UK people live and die on their reputation, no-one has any rights and if enough people take a dislike to you your career can be toast or you can struggle to stay in work enough to get through the year.

I appreciate that you work in production yourself but that does not make you an authority on all things production-wise worldwide, and I really don't like the arrogant tone with which you're dictating to other people who also work in the industry posting on this site. We all work in the same business but by the sounds of it in different fields and different countries so we will undoubtedly have different experiences. So please use your Producer's good judgement and allow people to have their say without sounding like you are the all-knowing god of the film industry. Hey wow thia thread went crazy. Just to weigh in with my two cents I would just like to say that this behaviour is by no means confined to egotistical movie stars on big budget movies, it happens all the time in the tv and film industry, on productions big and small, utterly dire digital crap that no-one will ever see and prime time top-rated shows. You would not believe the number of people who have egos in the tv industry: small-time directors, small-time cameramen, I have even had to deal with an arrogant, difficult runner and wait for it, I repeat wait for it, an arrogant, difficult work experience boy!!!!! I really am not joking, I nearly had to sack him from his non-job. Some people's attitudes really are unbelievable!

Anyway what I'm trying to say is Bale's bullying outburst is by no means remarkable and there is and always has been an accepted culture of bullying within these industries. People get what they want from people through threats not encouragement, believe me I've had a lot of them. The problem for this man is if he talked back to Bale or walked away he not only would have been fired, his reputation would have been possibly iredeemably damaged in the industry. When I have been bullied by people and wanted to quit the job I have been advised not to as it would look bad on me being the junior position. I have also had someone who took a dislike to me for no reason at all as a runner prevent me from getting another, crucial job. I could of murdered her. My point is that this man had no other option but to stand there and take Bale's abuse and Bale knew it, that's what bullies do, pick on someone they know can't fight back. It goes on all the time and it is one of the many things I hate about the industry. And for this reason I think Bale (and I'm sure a lot of other "stars" too) is an utter cunt.

I remember some quote from Christian Bale saying something like, "If everyone knew what a jerk I really am, no one would like me." I figured it was just self-deprication.
