Well, here's the thing about that.
IDK if this is still the case, or not, but at one point, the octs were getting fed donated breast milk. (Since I'm too lazy to read anything else these days, I got that off the Wikipedia article.) Before that, I had no idea that there even was such a thing — though I guess it makes sense when you consider donated blood and donated organs — and was stunned to find out that it costs $300-$450 an ounce. Now, granted, what I know about children, especially babies, could fill a thimble and still leave plenty of room for a nice cup of tea. So maybe I'm thinking that they need to eat a lot more than they really do. Still ... unless you're feeding the little guys with an eyedropper, like they're injured sparrows, that bottom line is going to get very ugly very quickly. I mean, I thought that Walgreen's was unreasonable in asking $32 for a can of that formula stuff.

That was something that was bothering me last night as I was reading the Wikipedia article on her. It says: "Nadya Suleman (b. 1975) (also known as Natalie Denise Suleman; Nadya or Natalie Suleman-Gutierrez while married; and Nadya or Natalie Denise Doud) was born in Fullerton, California." Then, further down: "In 2001, Suleman started procedures to change her legal name to Nadya Solomon, but her name remained unchanged and there is no name-chane decree on file."
OK. Suleman is her parents' last name (and, so, her maiden name), and Gutierrez was her husband's last name. And let's assume for the moment that her real first name is Natalie, and that Nadya is a nickname. That still doesn't explain where the name Doud came from, or why she would change her name to Solomon (unless she was just changing the spelling of her maiden name). All I could think, when I saw how much disability she got, and the fact that she's still on food stamps with disability for three of the little guys, was that she was bouncing around, getting multiple cheques under multiple names. I'm not saying that fraud is the only reason to change your name — I changed my name, and my reasons were totally aboveboard, as are, I would suspect, most of the reasons people change their names. But I just couldn't help but listen to the bells and whistles that got set off in my mind while reading this.

Bullshit that it's ONLY about connections. Maybe being fabulously wealthy might require connections, but living a decent middle class life is within just about everyone's reach. I always wonder, why is it that certain immigrant groups manage to do well in the US despite coming from crushing poverty back home? How is it that they are able to live decently here in this country, but others don't? They don't have any special connections, they barely know the language and defintely don't know the culture or system when they arrive. Obviously it's because they work hard. Octomom may be the exception to you, but I live in Calif, and it seems to be the rule. Really, people who work hard are punished by the current system.
One other note to Candy: regarding social contracts, there should be one that EVERYONE pays for their necessities first before luxuries. This goes double if your on welfare--they should have their money garnished for the things they are so dependent for. So before you go get a bottle wine, the flatscreen TV, a vial of meth or your highlights done, you've already paid for your health insurance, dental, car insurance, acutal food, rent, and kids. Then by all means, have a field day with the money left over.

I only found out about this whole thing yesterday (been avoiding the news AMAP these days, since it's just too damn depressing), and I'm still attempting to digest how it could possibly make any sense to anyone to bring 14 people into the world when you can't afford to feed yourself. I'm still too confused to be furious, TBPH.
I have the feeling that when it all finally sinks in, the fury is going to be less about the gummit handout wagon breaking down outside her pad, and more about how yet another assbag who can't even run her/his own life is bringing a totally helpless being (or 14) into the world who is completely reliant upon the mercy of those around him/her for his/her mere survival. Few things infuriate me more. Those poor damn kids. None of them asked to be dragged into any of this sick, sad world. And yet, they're the ones who're going to pay the most for all of this. They're totally fucked. I mean, I already see the Lourdes Brows(TM) starting on the little one in the purple shirt.
My dad grew up in Germany, and he told me recently how there, if you're on public assistance, you're allowed to have three children, and then, you're forced to decide between sterilisation and going off assistance (in other words, they refuse to pay for a fourth). (He lived there in the 50's, and I don't know if this is still true today, or not.) While I found this fairly repellent at first (probably because he used the word neuter — he has a ... eh ... unusual way with words), I'm starting now to see there's some sense in that way of thinking. It's one thing to have to pay for the consequences of your choices and actions yourself, and something entirely different to force other people to pay for them.

Candy, you really need to get your head out of the sand and stop making excuses for the assholes that populate this country today. Many so-called destitute Americans are that way simply because they don't want to work hard, want to "enjoy their lives" with drugs and alcohol, and they want to cheat, use and abuse the system. That is a fact. This notion of the hard-working American has been dead for at least 20 years. We have people today who love to claim disability even when they aren't, who love to shit out kids for the money, who love to use their welfare money for luxuries (i.e. manicures, beer, eating out, designer bags, etc).
Why should anyone making over 200K have to pay for those who didn't put the effort in? Everyone in my family makes over 150K. This wasn't done by magic. They have worked their asses off while the rest of the trash was too busy being stupid, fucking around and not studying or putting time and effort into their businesses. My dad is an orphan, and came to this country with $30 in his pocket, but the first thing he did was go to college and make something of himself. He did whatever odd job he could to pay for schooling and today he is very successful in his field. He's saved his money, invested wisely, didn't waste a penny on any vice and he deserves to enjoy his life. Why should he pay for lazy dumbfucks? My husband and brothers are all physicians. None of them are geniuses, but they have put in so much effort into their educations. When their friends were out on Saturday nights, getting laid, smoking pot, taking weekends to Vegas and what have you, all three had their noses in their books, to the point that they all nearly suffered nervous breakdowns from the pressure of their field of study. Now if they are making 6 figure salaries for crazy amounts of work (my hubs works 12 hours a day, including two full weekends a month...no days off in between), they deserve every penny. My high school dropout uncle owns a small business, and there isn't a day when he doesn't leave home by 5am and come home before 10pm. No coffee breaks, no "me" time, nothing. Has to deal with criminals trying to rob him on a regular basis. He deserves his income--he works damn hard for it. I was lazy in college and I don't make as much, nor do I feel entitled to a single damn thing. If I can't budget it, sorry, I won't be going out to dinner this month or getting my nails done.
And why is 200 or 300K considered some magic number? It means shit if you live in any of the big cities. There's a huge difference between a Bernie Madoff scumbag and a suburban dentist.
If you want to live well, work hard. You reap what you sow. That is the basic law of humanity. No taxpayer should have to be responsible for your poor decisions. You're in trouble? Go to your family and friends first. Think before you cut people off and stop having a sense of major entitlement. I can't stand freeloaders.

I guess that you and I just see the world in different ways.
I want to make my own way in the world without anyone's or the government's help. That way, I can rejoice in my personal accomplishments. When I fail and make a mistake, I try to figure out a better way to not continue making the same errors. If I have to work 3 jobs to make ends meet that is what I do and have done since I was 15 and now I am 50.
I guess I am stubborn that way, but at the end of the day, I don't want to take anything from anyone that I didn't earn with my own sweat, my own determination. It is a matter of pride but more importantly, I want to see how far I can push myself and still remain a happy and kind person.

Second: the united states is a country that prides itself in the respecting and upholding of human and civil rights - these are the _fundamental principles_ our country is built upon; values and notions which are both *meaningless* if an increasing number of said country's people are financially destitute, disadvantaged, exploited, and unable to afford to go see a doctor when sick.
Providing people with institutions, opportunities, and services such as access to health care, a healthy environment, a stable economy, retirement worthy of a human being, worker's comp, disability insurance, unemployment, fair wages... has nothing to do with charity or giving hand-outs to the poor. A good government should provide such conditions for all of its citizens. This is the essence of what the US is built on. The times of absolute monarchies where people were at the mercy of their landlords for an extra potato or some meat on the table, are over.
As an example, anyone making $10M per year while their underlings scrape by on under $20 or even 40K is a disgusting excuse for a human being. Nobody "earns" or "deserves" that kind of favorable disparity in pay.
This is not about government handouts, this is about equity. There needs to be a social contract that forces someone who makes 200 K a year to pay his dues to the society he lives in, so people less fortunate than him can benefit just as he would benefit if he were to become unfrotunate.

Here in the UK- the benefit capital of the world- the same arguments rage all the time about supporting feckless mothers. On one hand, the fact that girls regard having a baby alone in their teens or early twenties as a legitimate career option is sickening but there is always the cry of ‘we can’t punish the kids’ Well, having worked in social services I can say we might need to as my social worker friends are now seeing the children of the children they protected. Huge sums of state money were given to house, feed and clothe these kids as well as all sorts of interventions and help. 15 years later those kids are getting knocked up to dip their bread in the gravy as they know this is an easy life.
If there was no welfare state these girls would not have babies. This is fact. I pay gallons of taxes and cousin is sitting pretty in a £900 per month flat paid for by housing benefit and a nice little book to take to the post office each week to collect her money. For doing nothing to earn it save getting pregnant.

I'm assuming this has to be sarcasm because I can't fathom anyone actually making a statement like this with any true solemnity. The Second Great Depression -- along with numerous other catastrophes -- are direct indictments of the Republican ethoi of laissez-faire financial regulation, exploitive environmental policies, the hijacking of our government by well-funded religious fanatics, anti-civil rights measures, and all manner of jingoism when it comes to foreign policy.
The last thing we need is another Fascist bimbo like Reagan who's little more than a spoksemodel for corporations and megachurches (and whose disastrous environmental stance and marginalization of our much-needed infrastructure are being felt years down the line) and who goes about proving the Republican self-fulfilling prophecy that government doesn't work by hampering its effectiveness, stocking it with incompetent yes-man and big business lackeys, and grinding the whole system to a halt.

This woman makes me so angry; I work with someone who has 4 kids and is pregnant with her 5th (an oopsy and she was on birth control) PLUS is going to school online and doesn't receive a penny in handouts. The girl works her ass off and never complains, and still manages to find time to take her kids to sports practice and anything else they need. Why do we reward people just because they can get knocked up? And stupid Nadya or whatever her name is couldn't even do the old fashioned way; I would personally have no problem boycotting any company that gives that woman a dime.
