When we saw out "dream house" that fell through last fall, I told him that if we didn't get along, there was enough room, (the place had a separate, heated workshop/art studio!), that we could both be home for a week and never have to see each other!

It was like that for me, with my (not crazy) family. We all lived on top of each other in the city when I was a kid...and when I had my daughter we were all "up north" with two houses and a bunch of land and it was like I hardly EVER saw them. But we took more meals together and did more fun festival/flea market kinda stuff together...that was nice:)

Well, I wouldn't say that! No I'm keeping it together. I'm a landscaper who is having serious issues with my back, that I was hoping to resolve before spring, so I'm home too.
I feel like I'm on vacation because he isn't up yet, and I have the house to myself and the cats!

I'm sorry about your creepo neighbor. I'm glad you're taking steps to stop him.
He reminds me a bit of our next door neighbor. When we first moved in, (almost 8 years ago), he'd watch us on our patio from his kitchen window. Every time you looked over, there he'd be. Nobody dirties that many dishes!
Anyway, we built a privacy fence and he made a big todo about insisting he wasn't watching us, blah, blah. He used to sneak up on me when I was gardening. He has bugged-our rheumy eyes and 4 or 5 front teeth. He told the hub and I that years ago when he was a truck driver, he'd pass cars where the girls were wearing really short-shorts. He said they must have "wanted" guys to stare at them. Meanwhile, I like to garden in a bikini top and shorts. He'd scoot up to my truck to strike up some nonsense conversation and stare at my chest. One day I foiled him by grabbing a big plastic plant pot and held it in front of my boobs the whole time. A small victory! Now he's nearly dead, so he isn't as bad.

@angel_i, I've lived in the 'burbs, the country, and the city. The city is exciting and as the cliche goes "a great place to visit" for me now. I want a few acres between us and our nearest neighbor, an old farm house with a big front porch & a fireplace and a barn. There really are affordable properties like that in northern Illinois, but you have to go out 1 1/2-2 hours from Chicago.

I've always been to fey to put together any kind of life plan...but its just beginning to form and it starts right there...I'd like to continue renting and put together cash to buy something in the country. I'd want to always be able to live in the city - I grew up here, something in the (dirty, nasty, trash covered) soil is in my blood - but how I LOVE to get away! *sigh* And the older I get the more I want to.

MORNING RANT:
I hate my racist ass neighbours. They're the worst kinda racists nestled in among this extremely mixed culture community. Like, the way we first met, the first morning I lived there, was this (big old hillybilly lookin') wifey started yelling, from out of nowhere, at me for letting my dog shit in her "garden". Lemme just tell you - it was February, her front door is right next to the garbage dump. She's been allotted a 1'x1' plot of land that she grows ONE flower in (I found out later - after that day she put a fence around it). Seriously, dudes, it was a big whole heap of snow and I was JUST ABOUT to pick it up!
Needless to say, I am not the friendliest person while picking up dog shit at 7am. ANYWHORE, my dog died soon after and then they felt bad. *eyeroll* And then something else happened that I can't talk about (it wasn't scandalous) and they REALLY felt bad. Ha.
There have been other things, but right now: we just got new Supers - and the building restructured, too, making one part-time. And they're really good! Considering the mess they were left with (the entire elevator and insides of the shaft were left in the dump area when they started, and the cockroaches...they're gone! The other guys weren't fixing it, that's fersure.)
Everything is looking pretty spiffy on their end but this group of neighbours takes every effort to let us know they think they suck. They go out of their way. One is down there wiping these plastic magazine holders attached to the lobby wall (no one comes in on Saturday)saying he just can't stand it anymore (stand what?). The other one is banging on the maintenance door (that's where he used to meet the other guy)in the middle of the day RIGHT after they posted a direct phone number on the front door . They sit out front and talk loudly about how everything is going to pot (it's not)and the new guys don't know what they're doing.
But here's the thing: they do, they're just not the old, white men that used to hang out with them all day. I've been watching those guys all chat it up on the daily for the last 4 years....Yeah- maybe THEY thought they were good but, honestly, BOTH my daughter and I were REALLY uncomfortable around one of them (he was TOO friendly in a kind of icky way) and the other one was always busy with something else...and a little racial, himself....it just pisses me off people have to act like that. Just get over it - we have new maintenance men. Yeesh.

Thanks for the good thoughts miff, the big guy upstairs owe's us big time! Things have been really horrible but people are rallying to help the worst effected. The whole impact of the fires has been hard to fathom really, and won't improve overnight for a lot of people, but it's nice to know people have been so caring. Not much rain to speak of though, unfortunately... *sigh*

Found the book! 'Jack the Ripper : summing up and verdict' by Colin Wilson and Robin Odell. I don't know if it's easy to find or not... but it was worth the time to read (unlike a lot of other books on this topic).

I HATED Breakfast at Tiffany's (so wasn't expecting to get into it) but that book was great. You have to give Capote the benefit of the doubt though... he really does make a very convincing argument by the end. And I even grew to like his flowery desciptive style (which I really don't like, usually).

I think that Jack the Ripper is probably the only serial killer I've never read a book about, probably because there are so many. I need a definitive answer as to who the killer was.

I've got a book around here that is definitely worth a look at... I'll have to get back to you for the title/author.
Definitely the most compelling story ever, I can't believe... well I can believe you havn't gone there. It's frustrating as hell not knowing who he is... and that no one probably ever will be able to decifer who he was.
But seriously, the more you read the more you want to know. There's so many contradictions and false leads... but there are some GREAT websites with reproductions of original "Jack Letters" sent to the police. Speculation too about which were real and which were fakes/copycat.
If you're squeemish.. and I don't think you are... there are photo's of the victims too. Very very disturbing and fascinating.

I've run out of good True Crime books, I'm down to shoplifters and jaywalkers and people that misuse the word "your". Btw, if you travel as much as I have to, leave a copy of a book about cannibalism on the nightstand, Housekeeping leaves the room spotless!

I recently re-read a Jack the Ripper breakdown... can't think of the author off the top... looked at all the known suspects and evaluated each. It was one of the better one's I've read... it made me wan't to learn more AND gave me nightmares.
