Bittersweet: Jade Goody Is Married
Jade Goody married Jack Tweed this morning in Essex, England. Her publicist said it was a ceremony filled with tears, smiles and laughter. I wonder if it was a ceremony filled with booze, because I would've needed plenty of the hard stuff to get through it.
You may or may not be familiar with the tale of Jade Goody. For those of you that aren't, let me just bust out the story for you really quick. So....27-year-old Jade became an overnight reality star in the UK when she was on Big Brother in 2002. After she left BB, she got her own reality show and also put out a line of products and shit. In 2007, she starred in Celebrity Big Brother with her boyfriend Jack Tweedy. The caca hit the ceiling fan when Jade made some racist remarks towards housemate Shilpa Shetty. Jade later apologized and said she was disgusted with herself. A year later, Jade went on the Indian version of Big Brother called Bigg Boss. Two days into shooting, Jade learned she had Cervical Cancer while on the phone with her doctors. The whole thing was on camera, but it never aired. Jade immediately quit the show and flew back home for treatment. Earlier this month, Jade's publicist said her cancer had spread and doctors told her she only had a few weeks to a few months to live. And here we are now....
Jade decided that she wanted to get married right away and also document the last days of her life on a reality TV show. She also sold the rights to their wedding photos to OK! Magazine of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Jade said she made that decision because she needs to make as much money as possible for her two young sons before she goes away. It might not make sense to everyone, but it makes sense to me. This is Jade's job. This is how she makes money. And instead of letting the sads completely take over, she's doing what she's got to do for her kid's futures.

I'm not celebrating her dying. I wouldn't want to mess up my Karma and I would never wish someone dead. I take offense to your remark.
As to the skewed view of Karma, I'm a person of asian descent and took her behaviour and comments personally. I put up with that type of crap. I think I have a better view of the true meaning of Karma as it is central to my culture.
My point was that people should be respectful of other cultures and orientations. It would be a better world if we didn't give a bigots a platform. People stress over how bad people have affected their lives. My point was don't stress because in the end Karma will take care or teach those who cause others pain.
I was horrified to see the posters outside the Oscars stating that Heath is Hell for protraying a gay person. But instead of spewing hate, I believe the Karma will teach those hateful people.
Jade Goody means nothing to me. I don't wish her dead. My only wish was that she spend her last weeks with her children instead of a lavish wedding. Her children deserve to have as much time with her.

I can't speak for how this is perceived by Americans but there's a definite class element to the coverage over here in the UK. Firstly, there have been a couple of journalists, who wrote for the Guardian and the Times newspapers respectively (broadsheets, not tabloids) who, after they were diagnosed with terminal cancer wrote regular columns on their treatment, their emotions, and how they and their families were dealing with the situation. One of them, John Diamond, had two young children only slightly older than Jade's boys. (He was Nigella Lawson's first husband, fact fans.) My point is that, although there's a difference between writing a weekly column and posing for OK! Magazine, both are inviting others to participate in the experience of illness. I can't help thinking that part of the venom directed at Jade is connected to the fact that she's a working class girl from a poor part of London (and yes, she's talentless and owes virtually all of her fame and fortune to Max Clifford, who'll have a lot to answer for when his time comes), rather than a middle class graduate writing in a middle class newspaper.
The whole thing is totally out of control, however. Yes, more women have been going for their pap smears in the six months since she was diagnosed - that is a good thing. But for Gordon Brown to be talking about it? For fuck's sake, he has no idea who she is, and much better things to do than find out.

I'm not about to wish anyone cancer ever. But, if there is a big ball of karma rolling around, I suppose I'd rather it was her than, say, someone who spent their lives selflessly helping others.
So many people in the world live good, decent lives, only to die alone, poor, obliterated, and with nothing to leave their families. I'd rather the public's gaze fell on them for a change. Also, a word to those of you who are American and won't know the ins and outs: any acts of 'redemption' Jade Goody has carried out (e.g. apologising to Shilpa Shettty) will have been 100% carefully stage-managed by her publicist, Max Clifford, who is pretty much a celebrity over here in his own right, owing to his media machinations.
Tbh, I don't know what she said that was construed racist. I never watched the show, and am not going to pretend to know anything about this woman.
I don't know to what extent of racism her comment was, so everyone can speak for themselves on her personal life.
On another note, I don't think I can imagine how I'd react if I found out one of my parents had weeks to live, regardless of what questionable remarks they once made about another individual. When you are a child, unless under extreme circumstances, your love for immediate family is conditional.
Quite honestly, most of my close family are socially conservative and very religious...therefore, I'm willing to admit that they are socially and politically ignorant, not necessarily overtly racist or homophobic, but with arguable views on certain demographics definitely. I, on the other hand, am very socially liberal (also big thanks to attending a liberal arts college), but my overall love for my family has allowed me to overlook these differences.
My family has fed me, clothed me, protected me, and supported me all my life. They've guided me down the correct path when I almost strayed from it. When I felt like the world had turned its back on me, I had a group back home who'd have loved me even if nobody else had and would make up for every person in this world who didn't...and there is not a chance in hell some occasional stupid comment they made is going to diminish my love for these people. It's never going to happen.
Before I strayed off topic, I just wanted to make a point and say that despite what other people say about this woman being racist and ignorant, she will be missed by her children. It is almost a fact. God, I'm overwhelmed even thinking about how these children would feel.

I'm actually trying to avoid all Jade Goody news as my Mum just this week got diagnosed with a similar cancer & so Jade's news is just like a continual barrage of what may be for my Mum & I'm desperately trying to be positive but all we ever hear is Jade's story about how she's dying in a few weeks/months. Completely selfish of me but this news is incredibly hard to avoid here & I'd really rather not hear about people dying of the cancer my Mum has just found. It's just sad all round.

Actually, Tibs, given that Max Clifford's wife died of cancer not that long ago I very much doubt he would participate in some massive terminal cancer fraud.
BarbadoSlim - the only people who are getting played are the people who buy the magazine if they want to get it, I sure as hell won't. And besides if people like Jade and want to spend all of £2.50 on it (maybe $3.50) then how are they being exploited? I really don't get where you're coming from at all. People who identify with Jade's background or her illness may get comfort from it, its not a big con. And just because people feel compassion and sympathy for Jade and her family doesn't necessarily mean they're gonna buy the mag anyway. I just don't get the reason for the vitriol you're pouring on what she's doing. Showing someone's death on reality tv may not be a good thing but its happened before on many a documentary, usually to increase awareness of that disease and to give the dying person some purpose. It must be hard enough to face your own death anyway, I really don't begrudge anyone doing whatever it takes for them to get through it.

So, good for her. My dad died of pancreatic cancer when I was 9, so it sucks when a kid sies their parent get so sickly and die. My goodness - I didn't know Jane Goody's cancer was terminal. Best wishes to her and her family. So sad.
My mom is five years into a losing battle with bone and liver cancer. She just found out she has a tumor in the one boob she has left from a mastectomy nine years ago. I know there is nothing she wouldn't try to do to leave something behind for me and my sister and we're grown ass women. I couldn't imagine looking at my three boys, all under the age of six, and not do what I could for them while I was still here. Not that money would ever replace my mother, me for my children or Jade for hers. But I understand what she's trying to do.

No BarbadoSlim - having no sympathy for or rejoicing in another human being's death is never and will never be the same as using a word that is used on this site all the time. I wouldn't use it to apply to a person with a learning disability (I've worked in disability services, I know the correct term for everything) but I might use when made angry by someone's stupid thinking merely because it is the least offensive thing I can think of to say. Whether you think we're on the same level or not I'm happy to say I'm nothing like you and never will be as I could never have such vile views towards anyone.
And no I won't be crying crocodile tears for Goody, rather looking at her makes me think of the close family members I have lost far too young to the disease and the young woman who I love who is currently suffering from it. If I cry tears for them is that ok with you?

I think it is sad that she is sick and I think it is great that she wants to share her dying days with England, but she does not matter to ME. I don't know her personally. I care about the people that I know who are sick and in my life. I feel bad for anyone who has terrible health issues, I have sympathy for anyone stricken with cancer. She is not the only person to receive a terminal diagnosis and she won't be the last. Because she is a sort of celebrity in Britain does not mean that we have to care about her or what she does with the remainder of her life. I am sure if the tables were turned, she would say the same. She is a young woman, dying, like many others. I am sorry for her, but she is nothing to me. That doesn't make me a bitch, just makes me a bit of a realist. I save the care and tears for people I know.
