Rubina Ali's Daddy Is Off The Hook
The sad tale of Rubina Ali from Slumdog Millionaire getting sold to the highest bidder is over for now, because police in India have released her father. Rafiq Qureshi was brought in for questioning after Rubina's birth mother complained to the po po that he was trying to sell their daughter to a sheik for $300,000. A senior police officer in Mumbai told Reuters, "So far there is no evidence of any offense, hence there is no registration of complaint and no arrest." Translation: Rafiq is giving us a cut of the sale.
Rafiq blames the evil doers at The News of the World for trying to knock his ass down to sell papers. Rafiq told People it was all a "lie made up by foreign journalists playing games with me." The News of the World never released the video footage they supposedly have of a fake sheik and Rafiq discussing the sale of Rubina.
For Rubina's sake, I hope some mean ass whores were just trying to sabotage her daddy and he wasn't trying to pass her for a dime. Besides, if you're going to sell off your child wouldn't you immediately go to the two biggest buyers of babies in the world: Vadge and St. Angie? Duh.

I think this is likely a load of shit. What are the chances some staff from News of the World would just think, out of nowhere, "Hey, let's see if we can get one of the 'Slumdog Millionaire' kids' parents to sell their child!" And I think some people here are being too optimistic about this situation. And I think it's kind of naive to assume he was doing it for her future--in India, sons get better treatment, better food than daughters. Sons don't get aborted. Sons don't get acid thrown in their face by in-laws. Etc. In all likelihood, he just wanted the money.
Basically, I agree with Ricki Lake. It's not terribly surprising either that he got off. I guess without the video evidence i can't KNOW this is true, but it's definitely not improbable.

I hope he gets caught doing this again and finally get that child adopted out to a family that gives a shit about her. How does Dad have custody over mom anyways or is that not unusual in India?

I'm starting to believe that the dad was set up by the NOTW. I'm sure he had been approached by other parties for "adoption" but why would he sell his famous daughter? It would be too high profile, she's globally known and she has the potential to become the family cash cow. I'm sure they have lots of smarmy people around them, begging to be their manager, arranging deals, but the adoption thing, while plausible, sounds unlikely for a famous child.
As far as custody goes, believe it or not, custody in Muslim families (which is what Rubina is) almost always goes to the dad of non-infant children. Two reasons for that: a) in their faith, fathers are responsible for the well-being and financial maintenance of their children. b) when the biological mom wants to get remarried, it's far easier if she doesn't have the kids with her. Universally, a stepdad will almost always resent taking care of another living man's child, and even in the "civilized" world, stepdads have been known to be great threats to their stepdaughters.
In this case I believe the News of The World and the autorities let the father go becasue they dont want the world thinkin this goes on in India.

No, certainly not every Indian is guilty of doing this, but it has certainly been a codified and accepted practice for a long, long time. So, if someone is accused of it, I'm inclined to believe it. That's just me. None of us have any proof either way, so it's obviously all opinion here.
Of course, America had basically the same practice until the 20th century, but because we linked it Christianity instead of one of those "heathen" religions, that makes it ok. Or something.
