Bea Arthur Has Gone To Heaven....
I was just got back from boozing in the sun to find my e-mail box filled with the terrible and heartbreaking news that the iconic Bea Arthur has went off to the great big lanai in the sky at the age of 86. I was not ready for this!
A rep for Bea said she died peacefully in her sleeping this morning at home. Bea had cancer, but her rep didn't give any specific details as to the cause of her death. Her personal assistant, Dan Witt, said, "She was a brilliant and witty woman. Bea will always have a special place in my heart." In mine as well.
Some know Bea for her role as Maude, but I know her as one of my best late-night friends, Dorothy Zbornak on Golden Girls. Seriously, I feel like I lost one of my bestest friends! After coming home from a drunken night, I could always count on Bea and company to lullaby me to sleep with their brilliant and touching way with comedy.
Thank you for being a friend, Bea. You will be missed and your genius will live on forever! I mean that. And tell "ma" we all said "Hi."
Now if you'll excuse me, I must drown the pain away with something strong. Maybe a cheesecaketini. Rest in peace, Bea.....

Maude was one of the best shows ever. Truly groundbreaking with he issues it dealt with, via humor. I could never imagine anyone else playing that role.

Wow... I'm so sad. Strangly enough I'm just watching an old episode (from season 5). So I see and hear her and then I read she died.
Of course I didn't "know" her but I will miss my favourite Golden Girl.

This is so sad. I love the Golden Girls, and as Michael K said Bea will always be Dorothy Zbornak to me. I have almost every episode saved on DVR for when I need comfort and laughter. I guess it's my generation, we grew up watching the Golden Girls as tweens.
My grandmother is in Hospice now, age 83. Literally on her death bed. I was so sad already, then I come to Dlisted for laughs and see that Bea has died. However I will say that Michael K has written an incredible eulogy for Bea. I couldn't have said it better. For Bea:
Enjoy the amenities of Heaven, Bea! I cannot, will not say rest in peace. You departed this cruel world but not before making it a better place by gracing it with your talent and presence. You will be missed but never forgotten, and although your body may not be immortal your work sure is. Thank you for all the laughter :)

I am at a loss for words right now, and that's never cool. Bea was a woman's woman and always had the good sense to never play a weak character. She was certainly a class act, and will be greatly missed.
Ms. Arthur once stayed in a hotel I worked at in midtown NYC. Every night, she'd come down to the restaurant before turning in for the night...and in that husky voice of hers..."Double Dewars on the rocks please" with NO attitude, pretense or any of that other crap "newbie" celebs are so famous for.
This is truly sad. I share in your feelings of loss.

The original sex in the city cast are all going. It's kinda hard to believe that Betty White out lived Estelle Getty, and now Rose and Blanche are the only ones left alive :( Dorothy and her cunty attitude will be missed, it was she who mad me thankful I was gay so that I would never have to deal or even have sex with a woman, just by her sheer beauty.

I think this says it all, it's from the star wars special.
I watched All in the family, Maude, GG and remember her as a very strong woman.
The interaction between her and the other girls are some of the funniest moments in t.v. history.
It celebrated being a woman and helped take away the uncertainty of getting old for me, Showing there is still a lot of life to be lead after 60.
I'm going to turn 40 this summer and thats kind of scary knowing that if I'm lucky half my life is over. I don't feel old and seeing the full life they lead shows that we never have to feel or be old.
I try to keep in my mind that even though I've lived 40 years (this birthday is a hard one for me) I still have another 30-40 years or more (all of the women on both sides of my family have lived 85-95 years)to experience.
And it also shows we don't need to have men in our lives to be complete.
I have 3 sisters, and have always known that they will be the most important relationships in my life. Children get their own lives, unfortunately we usually out live the men in our lives, but at least one of my sisters will be there to the end.
My Grandmother and my Great Aunt live a country apart but still talk on the phone 10-20 times a day. They keep each other young. My Aunt Virgina isn't in the best of health and I dread the day she dies, because I think my grandmother won't be long after :(
She didn't approve of the views or morals of All in the family or Maude or Rhoda but thats still who I grew up watching them with, even she couldn't resist Bea Arthur and if you knew my Grandmother thats saying a lot! :D
