Bea Arthur Has Gone To Heaven....
I was just got back from boozing in the sun to find my e-mail box filled with the terrible and heartbreaking news that the iconic Bea Arthur has went off to the great big lanai in the sky at the age of 86. I was not ready for this!
A rep for Bea said she died peacefully in her sleeping this morning at home. Bea had cancer, but her rep didn't give any specific details as to the cause of her death. Her personal assistant, Dan Witt, said, "She was a brilliant and witty woman. Bea will always have a special place in my heart." In mine as well.
Some know Bea for her role as Maude, but I know her as one of my best late-night friends, Dorothy Zbornak on Golden Girls. Seriously, I feel like I lost one of my bestest friends! After coming home from a drunken night, I could always count on Bea and company to lullaby me to sleep with their brilliant and touching way with comedy.
Thank you for being a friend, Bea. You will be missed and your genius will live on forever! I mean that. And tell "ma" we all said "Hi."
Now if you'll excuse me, I must drown the pain away with something strong. Maybe a cheesecaketini. Rest in peace, Bea.....

Ohhhhhhhhhhh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe this!!!!!! with all the goddam technology can't we figure this cancer crap out already!!! Makes me soooo mad. I hope she didn't have to suffer so much. Something told me to pick up a bottle of wine today, and thank goodness I did, I can now drown my sadness. I loved watching her on Golden Girls with my mom when I was a teen. OMG, she was hilarious, such a true talent, not like the talentless crap we get today on tv. I can still watch episode after episode, and still laugh as if I never saw it. Ohhh this sux!!!! RIP Bea.... :-((((((((

yeah, but... in my opinion(and i'm going by my love of reruns).. stuff like "All in the Family" would be picketed off the air nowadays...

Yes I agree. I am still amazed that Hogan's Heroes was ever allowed on TV after WWII and the Holocaust. I mean geez, lovable bumbling Nazis?
ESE! Que pasa, homey!?
Um...so Bea was a PETA supporter. But I'm kinda hoping that was during simpler times...or that she was mislead...

That John Currin painting is of Bea Arthur's actual nude breasts? Are you sure?
**********************************
To be true, I cannot be sure.
BUT if Bea didn't do it, Dorothy did at least!
Episode Summary:
Dorothy, Blanche and Rose each secretly pose nude for a Hungarian sculptor who will unveil the statue at an art show opening at a museum. Meanwhile, Sophia brushes up on practical jokes to get back a prankster at the Senior Citizens Center.

Everybody says tv nowadays is so trashy and cheesy, well they must've not lived in the mid/late 70's. The Gong Show, The $1.98 Beauty Show, variety shows like Pink Lady and Jeff, Shields and Yarnell, Sonny and Cher. We were forced to watch this shit because there were only three major networks and usually one PBS station and a couple local stations with reruns.

And there was always "Mummenschanz" on those shows too!

That John Currin painting is of Bea Arthur's actual nude breasts? Are you sure? I always assumed it was just from imagination. You know, the head of Maude pasted on a topless torso. I could be wrong. Anyways, I am sad she passed. I loved seeing her on the Pamela Anderson Roast. She was a very unique and funny lady.

And when she shows her boobies, it's art:
http://www.tate.org.uk/images/cms/12685w_nude_2.jpg
Yet with hindsight we can discern in Vallotton's later nudes - and there are many of them - characteristics that render them very contemporary. Nu assis (1910) is stunningly prescient with respect to John Currin's nudes of the 1990s. This woman looks very much like a stout bourgeoise, and her no-nonsense hairdo attests to her conventional background: no glowing, flowing tresses here, no savage, Baudelairean chevelure . Her face is ordinary, her expression smiling and bland; at best she's jolie laide....
But I was looking more for this:

It's hard to find pictures of her younger but, um...she did a lot of nudes, somehow...:S

you see me, bitch....
I loved Bea Arthur SO much!
Maude was groundbreaking television as were all the Norman Lear Shows, genuis to have characters pass thru on "All In The Family" that were strong , interesting and funny enough that would warrant the success of "The Jeffersons", "Maude" & "Good Times".
I remember so fondly Saturday nites as a teen watching Golden Girls with my gran, Bea, say hello to her , she was a big fan of Dorothy's!
I ran into Bea once on Central Park West in 1989 and she couldnt have been any nicer
RuPaul told me he sat next to her once on a flight from NYC to LA and she told dirty jokes and kept him laffing non stop for 4 hrs..
There really is nobody like her in Hollywood today , RIP Bea a TRUE talent !
"You ARE a whore,darlin"- Cristal Conners, Showgirls
This post is so heart-breaking..Bea is..was so talented and a charismatic person..sad..
i wonder if ziggy stardust heard about this?

and yes the passing of Bea Arthur is very tragic, some of the fondest memories I have of my grandparents are of watching All in the Family and Golden Girls. Rest in Peace my dear Bea...
Yeah I agree re being able to sit thru re-runs. I've seen them over and over again and still laugh.

I'm pretty sure I'm in shock right now. I see it, but it hasn't sunk in yet. Once it hits me it'll hit hard. I grew up on the Golden Girls and continued to watch the returns later on in my teen years. Hell, if Lifetime hadn't of taken them off I'd still be watching.

Not trying to hijack the RIP Bea thread(RIP Bea! What a memorable talented broad you were!) but I think TVLand went downhill when the owners to the rights of old TV shows realized they had a goldmine on their hands and refused to let TV stations like TvLand buy the rights to televise their shows. Instead they made money by putting out DVD releases. I guess the profit margin is greater? When Emergency stopped being shown on TVLand, a bunch of us crazy fans emailed TVLand peeps, and their reply was basically "Sorry folks, we're big fans of Emergency too, but the company won't let us contract to show it any more". Then voila, DVD issues of the show started being put out. It's all money driven. What a surprise.
Wow! i didn't know she was that old... :(

The Golden Girls was the best sitcom ever in my oppinion, followed by All in the Family and Seinfeld. The other day, I was watching the series finale of Golden Girls and crying my eyes out!
I usually don't care when famous people die, but this honestly makes me sad. I'm glad she died peacefully and lived a long life. Bless you Bea Arthur.

RIP Bea Arthur. What an immense talent she was. I acutally did my research paper for my college gerontology class on the Golden Girls and how aging women were portrayed on that show as opposed to other contemporary shows. I got an A for the paper and in the class :) I don't think I could ever tire of the Golden Girls, particularly Dorothy's acerbic wit. To me, it's one the best shows ever produced, and echelons above the utter swill that passes for TV today. Along with I Love Lucy, I think Golden Girls ranks up there as my favorite TV show ever, and one that is timeless in its appeal.
Rest in peace Bea :(

maude was groundreaking because it dealt with women's rights, abortion, breast cancer, etc.
golden girls was groundbreaking because it featured 4 older women who weren't blonde barbies, botoxed, nipped and tucked to death. and not only were they over 40, they were over 60--a show like that will never be seen again on network tv.
right on, maude (bea)
This is so fucking sad. I thought that angry ol' dyke would live to be 100. RIP Bea.

What I really loved about the Golden Girls, especially Dorothy, was that they made me not afraid of getting old. When I'm in my 60s I want
to be like Dorothy Zbornak, wardrobe included!

That is the way I feel. What was really ground breaking about that show is that you had older women enjoying life, friendship, men. Life didn't end at 50. I wonder if there will ever be another show like that again since it seems like the only people who advertisers want are young people.
Somebody mentioned early Bea Arthur's performance in Mame with Lucille Ball.
The only good thing about that movie was Bea Arthur.
Sorry, I'm probably one of the few people that didn't love Lucy in that mess.
LOL @ Sushi...I loved that episode!

I remember when they used to show Maude on TV Land (why does that channel show nothing but utter crap nowadays?). I remember when she got an abortion.. now I wasn't alive back in the 70s, but I can only imagine the controversy that it probably caused when it first aired (it would still be controversial today!). What I really loved about the Golden Girls, especially Dorothy, was that they made me not afraid of getting old. When I'm in my 60s I want to be like Dorothy Zbornak, wardrobe included!
