Bea Arthur Has Gone To Heaven....
I was just got back from boozing in the sun to find my e-mail box filled with the terrible and heartbreaking news that the iconic Bea Arthur has went off to the great big lanai in the sky at the age of 86. I was not ready for this!
A rep for Bea said she died peacefully in her sleeping this morning at home. Bea had cancer, but her rep didn't give any specific details as to the cause of her death. Her personal assistant, Dan Witt, said, "She was a brilliant and witty woman. Bea will always have a special place in my heart." In mine as well.
Some know Bea for her role as Maude, but I know her as one of my best late-night friends, Dorothy Zbornak on Golden Girls. Seriously, I feel like I lost one of my bestest friends! After coming home from a drunken night, I could always count on Bea and company to lullaby me to sleep with their brilliant and touching way with comedy.
Thank you for being a friend, Bea. You will be missed and your genius will live on forever! I mean that. And tell "ma" we all said "Hi."
Now if you'll excuse me, I must drown the pain away with something strong. Maybe a cheesecaketini. Rest in peace, Bea.....

I always loved this one; loved her delivery of this line and also the way Blanche reacted -- I think it's from one of the first episodes:
Dorothy: So you're five years older. So am I, so is Blanche. Alright, so you have a few more wrinkles. So do I, so does Blanche. OK, so you're a little thicker around the middle. So is Blanche!
Bea arthur is a legand and that fact is whats helping me to deal with her loss.

I don't know if they really hated each other. I know (based on BW's book...lame, I know!) that they weren't the best of friends...but I don't know if they just despised one another...
:(
Rest in peace, Pussycat.

I posted a couple clips back around the second page of this thread. Bit it's prolly faster to just search youtube. Also search Google video.
Randolph is still the hotness. Oh, that's some fine mature man meat.
Richard Hatch when he guest starred on the new Battlestar Galactica. He's still hawt.
Sorry. Enough talk from me about mature hot men on this thread.
Bea and Betty White couldn't stand each other in RL, I always wondered what that was about. They certainly were good actors on the show - you'd never have known

Amen.
love Bea! so sad :(

Where are you guys seeing epis of Maude? I wanna watch Maude!
----------------------
Maude used to be on TVLand several years ago. I saw it back in the day, and rewatched it on TVLand. Now I hate TVLand. It used to be my favorite channel. They had Emergency!(woohoo Squad 51 KMG365), Maude, Adam 12, all kinds of cool shit. And Twip!
@Sugaroo:
Ha! It was the only one I could find that far back:)

It is times like this I certainly hope there is a heaven.
You paved the way for so many women. Rest in Peace.
LOL...off the subject of Bea...I just watched an episode where Rose says, "I have a rule...if I can't pronounce it, I don't put it in my mouth."
LOL!!!
Loved her as Maude! Only watched GG off and on through the years, but I love it all the same. Wonderful shows... All in the Family, Jeffersons, Maude, Good Times(a spinoff of Maude), GG.

B: "But I've been disrobing in front of Dr. Kagan for three years. Why would he ask you out when he's seen the promised land?"
D: "I don't know...too many squatters?"
I loved Stan too! I thought what was great about the show is that even though they divorced, he left her for a young chippy, they had a deep love for each other.
I also loved the series finale when she got to marry the hot piece of ass Leslie Neilson.
When I'm feeling like shit and life is sucking I have a comfort tv show, and that's The Golden Girls. Just last night, I was drifting off to sleep to an episode and knew exactly what was happening without ever peeping an eye up from the covers. I've seen every episode dozens of times and it NEVER gets old. I never get sick of watching that show. I love those women and Bea Arthur kicked ass. God bless her, she brought me a lot of laughter. Damn, now I'm all teary.
Completely agree about Stan. That episode where he carries the monkey everywhere with him is classic! I just saw that one on Hallmark channel like last month.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
My dad just called me...he has the original cast ALBUM (the record!) of Fiddler on the Roof...and Bea was part of it. I had no idea. She was so talented.
Stan was awesome. I think he was one of the more underrated aspects of the show. The episodes he was on were pretty funny. I just watched the one where they go the psychiatrist:
"He's not out of monkey, Stan, he's out of money!"

Maude: Archie, you can either get up and eat breakfast, or lie there, feeding off your own fat.
[pause]
And if you choose the latter, you could probably lie there for months.

I was gonna quote that! STEALER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, Rue was the youngest of them by about 9-10 years. Betty, Bea and Estelle were roughly the same age.
I just looked up Herb Edelman and it said he was 6'5". I did not know that!
He was the perfect guy to play Dorothy's ex.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I loved her in Maude, I loved her in Golden Girls and I loved her in Mame. She taught me that being different is perfectly fine. It's ok to be yourself & voice your opinions. In a loud voice, too - if that's what you want. I bet heaven is a funnier, wittier place now that she's there with "Ma". She was just a class act all the way.

I'm crushed!! I still watch 3-4 GG episodes every night because I have them recorded on my DVR (probably 40 waiting to be watched as I speak). My men tolerate it if they want to stay and if not.... they need to leave. I'm speachless. I was gone all day and didn't know. I'm going to go on a GG marathon now, gnight all!! Sob, sob, sob. RIP Pussycat, you have no idea the laughter you brought to us all!!!!!!!!!

The real star of that show was Sophia's handbag. That thing was in every scene. It used to kill me when she would shuffle into the kitchen in her robe and slippers to make coffee and that purse would be slung over her arm.

Oh Pussycat, rest in peace.
She really knew herself...
As Dorothy Zbornak, Arthur seemed as caustic and domineering as Maude. She was unconcerned about the similarity of the two roles. "Look -- I'm 5-feet-9, I have a deep voice and I have a way with a line," she told an interviewer. "What can I do about it? I can't stay home waiting for something different. I think it's a total waste of energy worrying about typecasting.
Thanks Michael for posting such a lovely photo of her.

I wasn't expecting this news. I watched Golden Girls every weekend (Saturday?) on NBC, in the 80's. Dorothy, and Sophia were so hilarious. RIP great lady, and thanks for the laughs.

Bea Arthur was one of those people I wished would never die. I wanted her around for me because she became so entangled with such great memories throughout my life that her passing feels like a little part of me just died. From All in the Family to Maude and The Golden Girls, from a young kid to young adult she was there splashed across my TV screen. She didn't mind being the brunt of jokes and I think that's what endeared me to her more then anything. She made me feel comfortable about my own failings and insecurities because she could so easily laugh at her own. Goodbye Bea and thanks for a lifetime of memories.
I'm blasting "Bosom Buddies" from Mame right now. So long, Bea.
This is particularly poignant to me because my favorite aunt died two days ago - she and Bea were the same age. Two great ladies gone from my life - this is bad indeed. :sobs:
RIP Bea!!!!
