Australia's Biggest Internet Celebwhore (This Week)

A reader sent me this story from Australia about some bitch named Clare who offended people when yapping about a shooting she witnessed in Sydney on Sunday. You see, Clare used the term "wog" which I was told is totally offensive. I've never really heard that term before, so the first thing I pictured was an animal who is a cross between a hog and a wombat. Yeah, a hog/wombat hybrid would be fuglier than anything between Paris Hilton's legs, but I didn't understand why that shit would be considered offensive. Then I googled it, asked around and learned that "wog" is actually an ethnic slur. Wiki says: "The term traditionally denoted immigrants principally of Southern European, and Eastern European origins (and since then, their descendants)."

Anyway, Clare and her stupid ass has become an overnight sensation over in Australia. The dumb bitch had to hire a spokeswhore and people are even selling Clare t-shirts. Really, what does this chick expect? That she's going to become the next Nicole Kidman or something? Sorry, bitch, but you'll probably get to be a fluffer in a low-budget porn and that's it!

However, if this ho was American, she'd be first-runner up in the Miss USA pageant. Truth.

And the dude who says the shooting was "awesome" is the one who should be getting all the attention.

(Thanks Becks)

When I was a kid 'wog' was a derogatory term for swarthy Mediterranean types who had emigrated to Australia. Most generally, it meant Italians or Greeks because they have large communities in Oz; Its use seemed to be dependent on skin colour, rather then just ethnicity, so that anyone a few shades darker then white got slapped with it. So people from the middle east would get labeled as 'wogs' also, but Blacks from other countries, Asians or Australian Aboriginals weren't (no idea why). There are all kinds of other nasty words for them. It's a horrible word, glad this idiot drew attention to it.

@star_grades I completely agree with you.

It just got revealed that that bogan twat made up this whole story for attention: she admitted it, police confirmed it.

************************************************
'Confucius... was one of whom invented confusion... and that's why he... One of the most ancient, he was one of the Chinese... Japanese who were one of the most ancient.'

I have a couple of general comments about this whole story.
I'll start by saying I am an Australian girl, around about the same age as Clare Werbeloff (which doesn't sound like an Australian name to me). My mother is from Malta (therefore making her a 'wog'). My father is Australian.

Firstly, the hype surrounding this girl has nothing to do with us 'cheering her on' as someone put it. It's to do with the fact that she comes across as a total 'bogan' (another aussie word, basically our version of white trash). She looks like a complete idiot saying what she does. Maybe it's hard to explain, but this kind of stupidity is very funny to Australians, and has a lot to do with our humour (see Kath & Kim, the Australian version).

Second, 'wog' is NOT the equivalent of the 'n' word. Australians do have a lot of terms for different races. To outsiders, it may look like we are being extremely racist. And I guess we kind of are. But it's not meant in a mean or nasty way (most of the time). I'm not defending her, but I think you have to be Australian to understand the context of what she was saying.

Third, we all have stereotypes of each others countries. Being Australian, I am presented with the idea that Americans are fat, stupid, eat too much fast food, have no idea about the rest of the world and are generally unfunny. Do I believe any of this? No. But that's the way America has been presented to me. Just like Americans are given the idea that Australians are uneducated drunks who ride Kangaroos to work and hunt crocodiles. People like Clare. It upsets me to see that some posters here actually believe that.

Finally, it was revealed in this morning's paper that Clare made the whole thing up. She was drunk and wanted her 15 minutes of fame, so she went up to the camera and spouted out this nonsense. So in the end this is all a non issue.

Sorry for the rant.

Yup, all those who said that in the UK this term used to refer to black people are correct. I was born in '73 and this word was the equivalent to an American calling someone a 'coon'. And yep, he Aussies mean something a little different by it, but to me it's no less offensive.

If this is true, then we are all wogs, just like we are all sluts, whores, skanks, skeezers, loosers and jelly h8rs, so then it wouldn't be THAT offensive...
HOWEVER, it sounds like to me, it's used, first and foremost, as a racial slur against black peeps, eventhough that wasn't the original origin? So it's basically the 'n' word no matter how you slice it? I mean, if the perps were whiter than rice, would she have called them 'wogs'?
------------------------------------------------

Basically some people who are of Anglo-Saxon or similar origin feel they can call someone 'woggy' or a 'wog' if they have features that some Southern European/Arabic people have, e.g. big nose, dark hair, etc., etc. We don't have a big black community in Australia however more refugees are coming from Africa and there has been some racism. And I am not defending Claire, I think she is deplorable, but some of them do talk like that. The sad thing is that I think some of them put it on to make them seem more 'wog'.

Yes calling someone a wog is very offensive here in Australia, especially with the words usually added in front of it e.g. "you 'dirty wog', 'greasy wog', etc.

Wogs were traditionally caucasian, because it usually referred to Italian, Greek and other European immigrants but now it has expanded to include some other groups including Lebanese, Syrian, Turkish etc.

The fact that it just came out of her mouth like that unfortunately shows a typical element of the Australian population here- dumb and racist. The majority of Australians aren't racist, but admittedly we do have a number of people like Claire.

The word 'wog' was used in the UK up until fairly recently so I'm surprised that those from the UK aren't familiar with it. It was used primarily as a derogatory term to describe black people but it is actually an acronym: Western Oriental Gentleman. That's what it stands for. No clue how it became part of the english lexicon but it was a word that was bandied about with great frequency at one time in the UK.

LOL since you put it that way .. yeah, I guess it does !! you funny :)

Well I learned something today. I used to work in a bar with an Aussie guy, and I once heard him refer to someone as a 'woggy looking guy'. I was totally shocked because here in the UK 'Wog' is short for golliwog, which is obviously very racist. So now I know that this barman was being offensive, but not nearly as offensive as I thought.

ok, just to get this over with, the word 'wog' is bad. There's also a few others. Nips (asians), wops (italians), and bungs (african/aborigial). All of them are terms used by "Clares" who are white people who think anyone other than Aussie white origins are second class citizens. She's a racist who wanted her 15 seconds so she threw the word out there when she was drunk. Don't use these words. And 99% of all aussies are blunt, and the men often macho/sexist pigs. It's like a country stuck in the early 70s in those ways.

I imagine someone already posted this but "wog" is a term used by scientologists to indicate someone who is not a scientologist. it's true. look it up!

For a little bit different take, replace the word "wog" with "bitch" and it's not such a big deal, right? I mean, it's OK to use derogatory names as long as they apply to women. Like cunt and slut. You can even use those words on men to throw them in the lower class of women. Useful.

Why is is more offensive to call someone a Wog than "that Southern European guy"?

From now on, I'm calling EVERYONE a Wog. Let the arguments begin.

In the UK wog was the same as the n word, like pakki for anyone from the Indian continent. These terms are rarely heard any more except for from extreme right wing groups, our version of the kkk or skinheads.

I think MK had the Aussie usage of "wog" right. There's even a recent Aussie movie, "The Wog Boy," about Greeks on the dole.
...........

Yup, MK got it right.

It WAS a derogatory type term for Greeks and Italians back in the 70s. We called them wogs, they called us skips (short for Skippy the kangaroo...hehe). By the 80s it was pretty funny.

That's when the Greek dudes that did 'The Wog Boy' did the TV show 'Acropolis Now' and later a live show 'Wogs Out Of Work'.... they definitely used both terms with humour and nobody's knickers got in a knot. It doesn't have quite the same connotation as the N word does.

Having said that, I wouldn't use it with someone I didn't know and haven't heard it in the media since the 70s. I really doubt that vid will make it on the news.

"Wog" in Australia is similar to "Dago". It is similar to the N word in that it depends who is using it and what the intent is behind the word.

Those people on that street all sounded drunk and dumb! I don't mean to put down my fellow Aussies, but, see, morons are universal. (Except the "awesome" guy, he was funny.)

I should clarify - it's not a word I would ever use in general conversation, or to describe a person. Not. Ever.

But - there are times I could use it, such as with a particular Greek friend of mine, just like I could call a particular gay friend of mine a queen... but I probably wouldn't. Who wants to cause offence, or prolong the use of these kinds of words?

Hi, Aussie gal here.
I don't think this footage went to air - see how it has the "Raw" tag on it? This is just the raw footage that was edited to make the actual news report.
"Wog" isn't really the same as the N word. We have a couple of other awful words that *are* like the N word, but that's not one of them.
In the '70s, it meant a Greek or Italian person, after the large post war migration.
These days, it could mean that, or it could mean Middle Eastern.
A bunch of unemployed Greek comedians actually had a HUGE success with a theatre show called Wogs Out of Work. They went on to make a sucessful film called The Wog Boy. They were very consciously reclaiming the term.

Tiger Lily, I am a bit shocked too, that it was broadcast so - I think the network must have seen that there was an additional story here to let it roll - no way would 'wog' have been allowed on Irish TV. The way that chick said it, she might as well have said "the blond guy.." she was so dumb and casual.

So god only knows what she says and thinks privately if that's how she talks on camera. Seems like she didn't even know there was something wrong...

********************************************

That's why I was thinking the term wasn't offensive in that way...I grew up in the South. Racial prejudice was not uncommon, even in my own family, but I was taught the "n" word was simply not an acceptable word to use. Now granted, it was considered a "cuss word" in my family, like "shit", "fuck"...Well, hell, can I be honest? My mom wouldn't even let us say "darn"...
Anywho, I'm no stranger to the "n" word despite my upbringing (I was always disgusted by it when racist trash whores would use it in my presence, and I'd often call a whore out on it), BUT, times have CHANGED here so much in the South that the 'n' word would not be used on ANY media...That's just how it is...
I'm surprised they use that "wog" term so liberally in the Oz media if it's so offensive????

I guess "Abo" would be derog for Aboriginal people of Oz.

When I visited Australia, I was shocked to see how many natives live in such poverty with the exact same sytemic ills as American natives. Oz Natives and American Natives live totally parallel lives. Same shit, different continent.

True, Clarisse, about VD Land (boy that sounds disease ridden!) it was Dutch first, I think, hence the name Van Diemen and then Britian took over.

A lot of Brits were forced to Oz as punishment for their crimes - some as petty as shoplifting. There was no money for prison in England for all the petty stuff and they needed to populate Australia so they were shipped to Australia. Part of their sentence was to build the roads etc. Not everyone shipped there was a petty criminal - some were killers etc but many were there for silly misdemeanors.

Sydney has a museum with all that stuff there, we visited it when we were there.

PS Not all Aboriginal people are addicts and criminals but the stats are as high and as similar as the Native Americans here, I was floored by the similarities when I was there.
