I think this is a major problem we have with our concept of "Charity". Ever since charities started acting like corporations...making sure that if you pay money you get something material in return...like winning contests with extravagant prizes or even just swag bags at charitable events...

It's ludicrous. Either you're being charitable or you're shopping. People don't really believe in being charitable at all any more.

I remember this ex-Mormon I knew. And when I met her she told me about all the wonderful ways in which she's helped people as a Mormon and I thought: well, that's cool. I can get on board with that. And then I discovered that there's a scoreboard. The more people you help, the better you are than your Mormon-mates. Gifts, gifts, gifts galore from the people you help! Money! Prizes!

When I asked her to come and help with some charitable work that I was doing she was SHOCKED and APPALLED that we got nothing in return for it. I was like: these people don't have anything to give us. That's WHY we're helping them.

On further contemplation, tho, perhaps we should have taken a child.

OF COURSE she wants children. How else can she be viewed as the ULTIMATE WOMAN without children? It simply cannot be done.

I looked at her Wiki page the other day and I could almost FEEL her satisfaction at how long it is - how much there is to say - how PROFOUND her impact on civilation seems to be...of course she wanted children. Not because of a deep desire to serve and nurture another human life but because of her deep desire to be served and nurtured by the public.

As for all the great things she's done for the people of Malawi - well, building a school, in my mind, is the same thing as building a factory, given the conditions these people are living in. How come know one ever builds a children's garden? That's the one thing I love out of German culture; kindergarten. The idea that the children have a safe place and resources to play. Play nurtures creativity (really important when you're tryna get yourself out of a jam) AND is a great way for kids to learn (kids don't hate learning, they hate school) and if they do it in a sacred place - a place where the rest of the world is not allowed to bring it's bitter OCD - well, that would seem like a beautiful, hopeful thing to do to me...building a school is just doing what Oprah did.

Or a hospital? Or send people over to teach the ADULTS things about creating a stable environment for their families...a community centre! Like that...I mean - it sounds like Malawi needs these kinds of things before it needs a school.

As for the documentary: Pshaw! Madonna would do practically anything to get into a movie.

I could never understand Madonna wanting to have kids. I remember being shocked when I first heard about her being pregnant with Lourdes. She just never struck me as the maternal type AT ALL! Madonna and babies just didn't (doesn't) compute.

She was (is) such a self-centred person, a true narcissist. I didn't think she could ever care about someone as much as she cares about herself. Maybe behind closed doors she is a good mother, although I highly doubt it lol. But I will admit that her kids look normal and well grounded. Maybe against all the odds her kids will be ok and grow up to be decent adults.

When a celebrity adopts a child that is handicapped, maybe hten I will give them a pass.

But as for Madonna?

If it's a trend, she jumps on it and this is no different.

I love how certain celebs bring 1 cute kid from a fucked-up country home and bask in the glory of being philanthropists and great humanitarians. What about all the other kids that weren't cute enough to whore out on CNN? Better yet why don't they devote some of their resources to fix the problems that cause those countries to be fucked-up?

For over 20 years Vadge has spent every waking moment trying to think up ways to provoke and shock people, just for the sake of getting attention, so understandably people are questioning her intentions and motives when it comes to adopting children.

At the end of the day though, she is now responsible for Mercy, it's a lifetime commitment and I hope all turns out well, for Mercy's sake, not so Madonna can have a shrine built in her image after she croakes.

In the meantime, I look forward to Lourdes' tell-all book.

i think this is a fucking outrage. I know MANY families here who have chosen to adopt children from other countries and I know ZERO of them who would even FATHOM having someone else pick them up for them. Holy fuck - and not because they couldn't pay them, BECAUSE THEY KNOW HOW TO BE PARENTS. Ugh, I hate Vadge. Instead of adopting out these children from third-world nations the better thing to do to help the children is to help communities to improve things like infastructure, education, health services,etc. You don't get a cute little baby to bring home, but I don't think that adopting children out will solve the problems of these countries.

When avarage families seek to adopt a child from overseas they usually have good intentions and have to work hard to meet all the requirements to adopt. Celebwhores like Vadge breeze through and pay their way with money to adopt these kids. And the fact that she didn't go to even pick up Mercy herself kind of disturbs me. David and Mercy seem like her acessories.

Sorry about this long rant.
