My mom's from Argentina and my dad's Irish American, but in the south? I am Mexican. And I honestly think that 90% of the time it's just an innocent kind of ignorance instead of intentional racism.

You may be on to something there. I think a lot of people are insulated and therefore just lump people of color into the few classifications they know. People also often confuse ethnicity for nationality.

If you're black,you could be Nigerian, Somali, South African, or whatever and all they'd see is a black person. Then again, I can only guess at white people's nationalities from their accents. And furthermore, since my Spanish is as wobbly as Lindsay Lohan trying to navigate a cobblestoned path from an all-night bender on stilts, I have a difficult time divining the various accents from the many Latin American countries.

Being a mongrel myself, I often just find it amusing to observe people trying to guess my racial mix and where I'm from.
