I can't believe I'm going to try to go into a scientific discussion here, but here we go.

Additionally, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc can be a very complicated subject. Hermaphrodites in particular are a very easy to understand version of this, if you have both parts, what are you? The practice in the past has been to make the decision for the baby as soon as possible, which sometimes is the "wrong" one for the way their brain was programmed in the womb, leading to huge amounts of identity issues later on in life.

I know sometimes "phases" and stuff can have horrible effects on your life later, but if you look into some of these articles about this girl, she was living as a female since the age of two, and her parents have been getting counseling for her this entire time. This was never an issue for her, no amount of doctors accusing her of being crazy, bullying on the playground, etc ever changed her mind. I doubt a person at that age would live through all that negativity if it was not based in some kind of biological need.

It seems that this Kim made a choice that will save her from years of turmoil. Her parents backing her up on it was probably extremely hard, as they will be the ones who will probably get the most criticism for it. Also, to the few posters talking about shaving adam's apples etc, she got hormone treatment BEFORE she went through puberty, therefore drastically changing the way she developed. This end "surgery" was the final step only, all of the rest came long ago. she did not get breast implants, etc, because she got female hormones at the same time other females did. Not doing the surgery at this point would have been more silly than not, what use is a non-developed penis on a person that, uterus or chromosomes nonwithstanding, is a female by definition?

Disagree with it morally all you want, say the parents should have forbid her from ever being a girl, wearing dressed, etc, but making her wait until she turned 18 to start getting hormone therapy would have made her life a thousand times more difficult when she DID have to have her adam's apple shaved.

Is it just me or does anyone else think she looks exactly like the "boy" from Tokyo Hotel? hehehe

I totally agree. I don't get why people are saying its 'sexuality'. No its GENDER reassignment surgery not SEXUALITY reassignment surgery. Urinating out of your clitoris doesn't make you a male. It really isn't complicated. People build up the 'complexities' in their head so they can claim 'open-mindedness' IMO. I've read some stories of full grown adults who have cut off their weiners and had the whole "gender reassignment" then later deeply regretted doing it.

To get a normal, natural body part severed from your body and to be shot up with a bunch of hormones from the opposite sex - SYNTHETIC hormones at that which are known to cause cancer - is so unnatural to do, and to let a child do it?? What kind of parents are they?!? I think this kid will grow up to regret this and resent the parents for not stopping him. Acceptance of gay people is one thing, but promoting people cutting off their weiners or cutting of their boobs to change their sex is just entering into the realm of insanity. C'mon people.

That might actually be The Netherlands you're thinking of.

She's been on TV in Germnay a couple of times and her parents said that at age 5 she took a pair of scissors and said "I'll cut the tthing off now".
Then they got her into therapy, not to try to "get her in line", but rather to see if this is really what she wanted and wouldn't regret.
Gender reassignment doen't just happen like that, there's a shitload of evaluation, a ton of certificates and a clusterfuck of bureaucracy before that, and especially in Germany where you need a paper for everything.

Also, someone said that 18 is just a cultural phenomenon in the USA.
No, it's not, it's the same thing in Europe.
Normally no one would get a sex change before turning 18 at any chance, but her case seems to be special because the family was consulting a psychologist starting at age 5.

Germany probably has the highest population of people living with sex-reassignment surgery than any other country so you see plenty of shims running around.

And alot of them look like her or better. Definitely better than Usher's lukewarm piece.

Reading the arguments against making someone wait until 18 had changed my mind a little. For the psychological half of the prodecure.

However, I still think they should wait until a person stops growing.

I will never understand these people who undergo sex change operations and then only legally change their names to a boring and similar version of their birth name. You just had the nerve to have your genitals surgically removed and then altered! Damn. Take the time to change your name to something fantastic.

And I say the earlier the better for such an operation. I'm sure she knew she was female at a very fundamental level and now she will start having female hormones at pretty much the same time as everyone else.

People say "oh I got something pierced at 16 and regretted it, she should have waited." And I get that yeah, maybe waiting til she was 18 or something maybe would have been better, but changing your gender isn't like dying your hair pink. Most of my friends who are gay knew who they were sexually at a pretty young age. They might have not come to terms with it or come out maybe until middle school/high school, but they knew. If she knew she wanted to be a she, I'm pretty sure she's not going to regret the decision. I could see waiting until 18 when she finished growing and stuff though. She's a cute girl.

She's very cute but I'm surprised that she was allowed to get the change at her age. While I have no doubt that she has always felt like a girl how has a sixteen year old done all of the psych work usually necessary to be OK'd for gender reassignment surgery? I have a friend that's been doing therapy and living as a woman since 16 and she's in her mid-twenties and hasn't done surgery yet.
