Sam The Koala Has Passed Away....
Sam the koala, who became an international icon of hope after the Aussie bush fires, has gone off to the great big eucalyptus forest in the sky. I know, it's okay to loudly wail in your cubicle. Everyone will just think you're having another "life realization" while dealing with your hangover. Let it out. Let it out.
Sam died during surgery. Doctors were trying to remove cysts caused by chlamydia. Apparently, chlamydia affects nearly 50% of the koala population. WAIT. Was Parasite Hilton in Australia recently? Close your borders to all Hiltons, Australia. Think of the koalas. :(
During the aftermath of the bush fires, Sam was found badly burned and suffering from a bad case of the thirsties. A fireman offered her a drink from a bottle of water and that beautiful moment was captured by a camera. It made its way around the internets and made all of us with dead hearts feel emotion again. Sam taught us how to feel things again!
Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd mourned Sam today and said, "The symbol of hope for so many people around the world was the great picture of that wonderful koala being fed water by one of our firefighters. I think that gave the people of the world a great sense of hope that this country, Australia, could come through those fires, as we have. Sam the Koala was part of the symbolism of that, and it's tragic that Sam the koala is no longer with us."
May Sam rest in peace.... Seriously, this is really sad. Look at this face:

....And I'm on the floor drowning in a puddle of my own tears (just pretend I can actually produce tears).

Michael K has managed to write one of the most cavalier obits I've ever read.
Dropping a Paris Hilton joke in the midst of a eulogy?
Try that at an AIDS memorial: "Lots of people died of AIDS. What, was Paris in town? Ooh, snap!"
People might think that shows a lack of respect, but animals don't deserve that sort of dignity, it seems.
A living teddy bear with bandages on is an oh-so-cute, but short-lived distraction, maybe worth some crocodile tears, and then back to celebrity-bashing.
This poor creature's death is obviously a non-serious event with just enough fleeting drama for Mr. K to feed on.
I wish there was an obvious way to work 'parasite' into the name Michael K but there isn't, so I'll just make it his middle name.
Oops, Sam's friend's name was Bob, and Bob and Sam gave each other hugs and were given a cage together. http://www.examiner.com/x-704-Pop-Media-Examiner~y2009m2d12-Video-Koala-...
Damn This is so sad. She was the sweetest little Koala. Thursdays are bad days. Someone famous is always passing away on Thursday latley. Farrah Fawcwtt, MJ. and now Sam and John Hughes.
I am crushed over this. Sam, you made everyone smile here in Oz and may you RIP.
First Sam, then John Hughes. Shit. I can't take much more of this today :(
Ah, poor little bubber. Seeing Sam after the bush fires prompted me to make a donation to the Victoria Wildlife Fund.
I hope she didn't suffer, poor thing.
=(
RIP little one.
that's right - Bob was her BF. How's he doing?
oh no i'm gonna cry...
It's not even that time of the month and I cried when I read this.
Noooo!
Okay, no more news like this for a second, MK, please.

Sam was a "she." Besides being sad about her death, I feel bad for the male koala who became attached to her at the rehabilitation center. I think his name was Joe. There was a photograph of Joe with his arm around Sam, like he was comforting her. So glad, at least, that the koalas trusted humans enough to let them take care of their injuries.
poor baby bear... :(

So sad. RIP little sweetie Sam.
Because of her, there is new awareness for all the Koalas who suffer.
It's always the good ones that go early.
Pouring one out for Sam!

This breaks my heart, I was just reading this morning about the surgery they were going to perform on him. My friend found her 14 year old Pomeranian this morning he had passed away suddenly overnight :( RIP Sam & Sherman... hope you guys meet in Heaven.

Rest in peace, Sam. Hunt out The Banshe -- he'll be the guy in nerd glasses perched on a Harley -- and hang out with him.

Ah, this has been a sad day on Dlisted. There's this poor koala, then the arrival of all these 6-year-old future Paris Hiltons. Waaahhh!!!
Sorry, buddy. Have fun in heaven. :(

"Did you KNOW it is snowing in my room, god dammit!?"
Very sad here in Aus, too, MK.
RIP Sam.
In a way it brings back the feelings brought about the devastating bush fires of February.
Sam was a beacon of hope and resilliancy.
Peeps still hurting bad. No homes. It hasnt ended and the years to come will show the complete fuckery of how many people, how many families are psychologically effected by the fires and their loss.
It wasnt just a fire, it was an unprecidented blazing, quick wall of pure hell that few people could escape.
Peace to all of those (also in California) who know what its like when their life as they know it and everything with it burns to the ground.
That's too bad, poor little Sam.
Sadness, indeed. Rest in peace lttle fuzzy bear, and may you have an abundance of hugs and an endless supply of fresh and tender eucalyptus leaves where ever you may be. *dabs eyes*

RIP Sam, you are one kute Koala!
Sadness. RIP.
If they felt they had to operate, they should have waited until he healed. RIP
Wasn't Sam a female koala? As far as I know, only females can catch chlamydia and male only pass it on, but that's with human beings. It might be different with animals, though.
R.I.P. sweet Sam!

Poor lil' precious thing...RIP, Sam...I hope the eucalyptus in Koala Bear Heaven is nice and crisp for ya, buddy.
...and even though the news is sad, thanks for that pic, MK...it made me smile a lil'.
FFS! This didn't have to happen. Surgeries during full moons (especially one with an eclipse!) can cause all kinds of problems (mostly blood loss).
R.i.P. Sam!
Aww, sweet baby. This is so sad. :-(
Chlamydia!?!?!? Did Pete Doherty fuck this poor thing?

Michael K - you made me cry this morning! I think I love you.
MK really has a knack for delivering bad news.
So sad but the Parasite crack was some great comic relief.
Sadness.
I will devour a box of Koala Yummies in her honor!
RIP Sam <3
Have Fair Winds and Following Seas lil' koala.
PS: isnt' chlymidia a STD?
Normally a wild koala would never let a human near enough to touch them. That little girl must have been in severe shock. I'm sad she died, but glad we've got the pic. Cuz it gives peeps hope.

Ricki Lake,
Koalas have had chlamydia for as long as I can remember... since I was a little kid.
Here's some info on it...
How did koalas get Chlamydia?
It is not certain how koalas have come to be infected with Chlamydia. Some of the possible explanations are via introduction of infected mammals to Australia on one or more occasions over the last 40,000 years, exposure to it during the koala's evolution, or or a combination of these factors. Whatever the case, most populations of koalas carry antibodies for the disease, indicating some level of exposure (Reed 2002).
How does Chlamydia affect koalas?
Chlamydia causes chronic infections in koalas. The infections occur in the urogenital tract (C. pecorum) and the respiratory tract (C. pecorum and C. pneumoniae) and can cause infertility, blindness and ultimately death. The visible symptoms are conjunctivitis ('pink eye') and urinary tract infections causing incontinence, leading to a condition known as 'dirty tail' or 'wet bottom' (Reed 2002).

Poor 'oala baby! Too sad :( I hate sad stories about animals.
**************************************************
Me too. I refuse to go see animal movies because they always make me cry. Like an idiot I went to see Marley and Me. I had "to go to the bathroom" for the last 30 minutes of the movie. I cried like a loon.
You don't fool us, MK. We know you can produce real tears for a real tragedy, which this is. Poor sweet thing.
