I think reduction should be mandatory after a certain number of fetuses is found. I'd even be generous and say five. It's just selfish and inhumane of the parents and doctor to put all of the babies at risk of death or horrible impairment later.

Hmmmm, its a shame that shit like this gives fertility treatment such a bad name. I conceived the twins I'm carrying via IVF and I am so grateful that the technology is available. In my case we weren't infertile really, but my stoner husband's little swimmers were swimming in the wrong direction or something and it would have probably taken us years before those shits turned around. Technology just helped guide the little fuckers.
Having said that, I can tell you that guidelines exist but the shit isn't really regulated per se. Here in England, a doctor is only allowed to transfer 2 embryos unless the mother is over age 38. At that point they are allowed to do more BUT if they do it, they then have to report the justification to the regulatory body. Yeah, you heard that right, they are allowed to transplant as many as they want and THEN get approval after the fact. Dumb shit. The justification is always that its appropriate to transfer 3+ for older women since they have a harder time getting pregnant, but you never know how that shit's going to turn out and how many of those things might take. I know women personally who have transferred 5 or 6 at a time and I think that's playing Russian roulette.

There should be limits on the amount of fertilized eggs implanted.
Basically the treatment is as follows:
Course of hormone treatment taken at home - injecting yourself in the tummy.
At a specified time (when you feel like a bloated cow) your fallopian tubes ripe with a gazillion eggs, you undergo laparoscpic surgery to harvest all the eggs (mine was 29 - quite high apparently).
These eggs are then introduced to partner's sperm in a petri dish. Only the highest quality are kept for implanting purposes (mine was about 9)
They then implant 2 at a time. In Australia the legal limit is 2 at a time. (or it was back then)
Despite going through this very emotionally expensive and financially costly procedure twice - I did not wind up with the much hoped for baby. Marriage went bust as a result.
Which leads me to believe that perhaps success rate could increase with a higher number of implants. I'm suggesting 3, but not much higher.
My 2 cents in any event.

They have. It's called selective reduction if too many embryos develop. Of course it's not ideal, but it's the smart, responsible thing to do.

There are already some kids out there who deserve all the love in the world and no one gives it to them. Being responsible to raise a child and make the best of her or his life is an amazing thing -12 orphans would have been happy to be adopted, but those selfish and egoistic people had to play human baby canon.
