Ted Kennedy Has Passed Away

In case you haven't heard (since it's on every news show, website newspaper and your neighbor might be shouting it from the window), Senator Ted Kennedy passed away last night at the age of 77 after a battle with brain cancer. Ted was the last surviving brother of the Kennedy dynasty. Ted's sister Eunice passed away recently.

The Kennedy family issued this statement early this morning:

"Edward M. Kennedy - the husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply - died late Tuesday night at home in Hyannis Port. We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever. We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all. He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it. He always believed that our best days were still ahead, but it's hard to imagine any of them without him."

May the lion rest in peace...

It's easy to "fight for the poor" when you've never had to earn a penny in your life.

Why is healthcare so urgent now? Why wasn't it fixed during the eight Clinton/Gore years, or all the other years Teddy was in the Senate with all his brilliant ideas?

He wasn't confused for 15 minutes after the car accident. He hightailed it out of there so no one could prove he was driving drunk, and left a young woman trapped alive under water without a second thought. How much did they have to pay off her family to let it slide?

That sickens me, and the fact that he warmed a chair in the Senate for decades can't make up for it.

I appreciate the fact that Ted Kennedy was very involved in important causes during his tenure in the Senate that have benefited the country. I am also about as far from right wing, fanatical, etc. as it gets; I'm not cynically exploiting someone's death in order to indict all "liberals," a la National Review. However, it is simply true that the circumstances surrounding the death of Mary Jo Kopechne are highly suspicious, and I find it difficult to understand how anybody could read the facts of that case and not feel that at the very least it seriously diminishes Kennedy's legacy. People who are offended when this is brought to their attention, just because he achieved good things as well, are frankly very shallow and probably blinded by partisan loyalty. It is perfectly possible for a human being to have worked to advance civil and women's rights AND to have killed (intentionally, I am persuaded) an innocent woman. Let's be grownups.

RIP Mary Jo Kopechne

Wow .. I DIDN'T actually hear this til I just read it here, MK. Busy day working on a busted PC. Very sad .. he will be missed. He was definitely a flawed person [ .. but who in this fucked ass world isn't??] but I do believe he honestly tried to do his best to make the world and this fucked up country better.

I will never forget his speech at Bobby's funeral .. it is one of my first memories.

Godspeed Teddy .. may you finally find peace and true joy and happiness.

Hey Fred

Whatever they did for/to Ted, and whatever it might have cost - it didn't work - the end result was still he same - just like for you, me, and everyone else: death

Who gives a crap how much money or influence he HAD? - theres' no running from a Stage 4 Glioma. The only thing of significance here is that whatever treatment he received, I am pretty certain it was with the thought that he MIGHT have enough time to see (and help)get the Health Care Reform Bill passed - and I for one am sorry that he did not live long enough to accomplish this. I am sorry for us too - Ted Kennedy (Moral Trainwreck that he was) fought for those without influence or money - shit, maybe he was just suffering from the "guilts", or maybe he was trying to buy his way into heaven...I don't give a toss. One thing is certain - without him the fight will be uphill, and this is an embarassment for America.

So Fred - you're not going to pay for my Healthcare? (sigh) I thought we had something special together baby - but I can see that it was all just "green corn"....

Nah jeepster, I will show my righteous indignation by refusing to pay for YOUR healthcare insurance. By the by gawd forbid you ever need it but do you think if you were diagnosed with terminal cancer you would have received the same care Teddy did, don't think so.

Jeepster's picture

Whole lot of strong opinions here. I think that all the folks who truly hated Ted Kennedy, and feel that the "murder" of MJK needs to be addressed, should fly to his funeral, give the finger to his family, and piss on his grave. Oh - and when the Health Care Bill finally gets passed, stick to your guns! Don't take advantage of the blood and sweat that a terminally ill man gave to fulfill a dream of healthcare for all Americans - show your righteous outrage by REFUSING to see your doctor, take your meds, and by all means - turn away from any help that might result from that Bastard's efforts!!!! THAT'LL SHOW-EM!

yeah - right.

Maybe now, the environmentalists will get to build that wind farm near Teddy's home, which he prevented because it obstructed his view.

Just another rich hypocrite. Ask al gore about playing golf on a course in dubai that consumes 4 million gallons of water a day, water that has to be desalinated....hmmm, wonder how big THAT carbon footprint is.

The diver who recovered Kopechne’s body, John Farrar testified at the official inquest that her body was found where the air pocket would have formed. He said: “Had I received a call within five to ten minutes of the accident occurring, and was able, as I was the following morning, to be at the victim's side within twenty-five minutes of receiving the call, in such event there is a strong possibility that she would have been alive on removal from the submerged car.”

Well, anonymous 73, all members of the US COngress - which included Obama - are guilty of the mass mmurder of 3000 people in sept 11 2001 because the congress has not demanded and held an honest investigation into that crime. So they are ALL complicit in the crime.

SHould we get to Afghanistan and Iraq also if you are still not convinced that Obama is a mass murderer?

Fred Flintstone's picture

He will be remembered all right. As when you cheat in college you can say; "hey dude I was pulling this Kennedy in class the other day and fuck man I almost got caught". Or if your driving drunk with a chick in the car you can say; "Yo hey dude so I am driving down this road with Susie and almost pulled a Kennedy". Or when you are with a bud and you have a real hot waitress serving you, you can always say " what the fuck dude so me and Bobby had this reall hot waitress last night and shit we almost pulled Kennedy on her".

And for those that say it was an accident; In this country when you kill somebody because of your harmful or illegal activity - it is called felony manslaughter. He was drunk - caused a death, should have gone to jail. Nuff said. In fact all you people that try to justify the death of MJK at his hands, you would have gotten 5-10 in a federal slam for doing the same thing. Think about that.

RIP Senator Kennedy =( and for all those who will bring up the Chapaquadick incident he was NEVER charged with the death of Mary Jo Kopechne death, and her family believed that he was NOT responsible and forgave him. He was a great Senator that did a lot for his state and his country, and he will be remembered as a great Senator and will go down in U.S. history as a fighter for the people. So say what you want about him but he will be greatly remembered by many, for years and years after his death, unlike some of the people who are leavening awful messages.

Like NOWORDS said “RIP Senator Kennedy.I think he was a good Senator who worked hard to help people. Now I will leave before I have to read the ugliness that is sure to be on this thread.”

Karen Flatts's picture

Oh, okay, I see. We can't talk about Chappaquiddick, huh? Forget Chappaquiddick then, ever heard of Northern Ireland, Dodd and the "waitress sandwich", Ray Reggie, the WKS cover-up at Ted's estate, the Harvard cheating scandal for which he was expelled, Ted having his enlistment in the Army unfairly shortened, his numerous citations for reckless driving and speeding yet NEVER having his license revoked, his numerous affairs including a 1987 sex romp on the floor of a restaurant with a woman OTHER than his wife ...

Need a minute to google? What was that some of you said about all he'd done for MA? The best thing that cretin ever did for MA was to die of a brain tumor. Period.

Yes, he was a limousine womanizing liberal no question.

But yes, he did do some good things, quite possibly to make up for the wrongs he did in life.

I agree, Sushi. I think his wrongs drove him to do the good he accomplished, which is more than a lot of people manage. Well done, Ted. Rest in peace.

Folks - lets get real for a minute.

Ted Kennedy is dead, and it was a hard way to go. He will be remembered for his flaws, tragic mistakes, AND the wealth of good things he accomplished (perhaps as pennance). He was human.

So was Mary Jo, who died young and miserably - hard to imagine a worse way (even including a vicious brain tumor) - but lets not put wings on EITHER of them. She was not 18 years old - more like 28 or 29 if I remember correctly, and she had been working in tough political environs for a while. Old enough to know the rules:

1. Don't EVER get involved with a Kennedy.
2. Don't drive/fly/bike/ski or hang-glide with a drunk, especially if the drunk also happens to be a Kennedy.

It is AWFUL that she died the way she did, but it was NOT murder. Who the hell is in their right mind after an accident? I have been in 2 serious car-crashes, (neither of which was my fault), and EVERYONE involved stumbled around for a good 15 minutes afterwards, not knowing what the hell was going on until the paramedics and cops arrived - and even then it all felt like it was happening to someone else.

Ted is gone, and I have to believe that to his last lucid moment he felt shame and remorse (rightfully) for what happened to that poor girl, and must have wished a thousand times that he could have the chance to re-live the events..... As we ALL do when we think about our past transgressions. Surely there are some of you out there with skeletons in your closets, but who are fortunate enough not to live in the public eye. Maybe you are a better person for having made a dreadful mistake, maybe you are just living quietly - maybe you are in an agony of hell. Or perhaps you are fortunate enough to have a good friend who talked you out of a stupid act - like accepting a ride with a drunk, or DRIVING drunk. Neither Ted nor Mary Jo was that lucky, but they paid the price. Let the dead bury the dead, and keep the lesson fresh in your mind along with a dose of charity for those who were not so lucky.

Being born and raised in Massachusetts, this is especially sad. Say all you want about the negatives, but the positives far outweigh them. Senator Kennedy wasn't just a great senator for the county and especially the state of Massachusetts, but he took on causes for individuals too. My brother is a stutterer. He had always dreamed of being in the Marines. They told him he could not serve due to his stuttering, even though he was more than qualified in every other way. My mother wrote to Senator Kennedy in the mid 1970's on my brothers behalf. He, in turn, fought for my brother to be able to serve and my brother did serve proudly for many years as a Marine, thanks to help from Senator Kennedy.

R.I.P. Teddy. You will be remembered proudly by a great many.

In this country you are INNOCENT until proven guilty. He was never convicted of manslaughter only leaving the scene of an accident.

He may not have went to jail for the involutary manslaughter, but he paid for it. He was never going to be President because of it. People didn't rally around him as they did his brothers and it was primarily because of that accident. His character came shining through in a negative way. So he may not have paid through our justice system, he paid with his legacy.

Right now he's dealing with God about it, so let God deal with it.

It is a bit much to try to tarnish the character of a victim. She was out with Kennedy, don't know if they had a sexual relation, don't really know why he didn't help her out, but she did not deserve to die that way.

With all that said, I hope he's resting in peace.

While his private life may have been less than stellar, his political life benefitted many.

Ted Kennedy did not TAKE any ones life. It was an accident. Didn't your mama ever tell you not to get into cars that are being driven by drunk people? Not saying he is a saint, just that he is not a murderer. Way to pull out the rape card though cause everyone knows getting drunk is just like getting raped.

***************

So, he's a drunk driver then? Certainly, that would make him guilty of manslaughter, wouldn't it? You blame the victim for getting in the car you say was driven by a drunk driver. So the "rape card" was brought out because you continually blame the poor dead girl who was left to fucking die.

Gee, I hope you never lose a child that way and then have people blame your kid for being left for dead with no rescue attempt made and police not called. I hope you never lose a child that way and then have the world blame your kid for just being a fucking passenger.

Mama, being driven home means she was cavorting with a married man? I certainly wouldn't doubt that, but I think the reason that she has been spared is because there were absolutely no rescue attempts to save her life while Kennedy did everything in his power to save his life AND cover it up.

On the topic of his public service, I'm always amazed at how much credence is given to senators. Ever been to a hearing? I have. They just show up for a few minutes, posture, then leave and let their aides to the work for them. Sometimes they vote, sometimes they don't. Nearly all their costs are absorbed by taxpayers. Solid-gold medical care and full-pay pension for life. Vote themselves raises. Get housing in DC. They posture, let their aides do all the fucking work and then lap it up in the luxury off taxpayer backs. Who wouldn't want that type of lifestyle?
