Michelle Phillips Isn't Buying It
Mackenzie Phillips' full interview with Oprah aired today and shit was intense.
Mackenzie not only said that she had a sexual relationship with her father, John Phillips, after he raped her, but she also said that she became pregnant at the end of their 10-year "affair." Mackenzie wasn't sure if the baby was her father's or her then-husband's, so she had an abortion. After that, she stopped having sex with her father and never let him touch her again.
Yeah, we're going to need scientists to invent some kind of pill just to erase these images from our brains. IT BURNS. My eyelashes are singed.
I'm mad at Oprah for not ending Mackenzie's interview by showing us precious shots of baby bunnies and fluffy puppies wearing kitten costumes. That would've been the time.
Shortly after the interview aired, Michelle Phillips spoke to Showbiz411's Roger Friedman and said Mackenzie is telling lies to sell copies of her book. Hurry, brings out those bunnies in kitten costumes out. It's getting worse.
Michelle pulled out the cunt knife and stuck it in: “She told me, then she called me back and said, ‘You know I’m joking.' I said it wasn’t funny. Mackenzie said, ‘I guess we have different senses of humor.’ John was a bad parent, and a drug addict. But fucking his daughter? If she thinks it’s true, why isn’t she with a good psychiatrist on a couch? I think it’s unconscionable that Oprah would let her do her show. I have every reason to believe it’s untrue. Oprah should be more judicious about who she has on her show."
And stuck it in again: "Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She’s had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years. She was arrested for heroin and coke just recently. She did ‘Celebrity Rehab’ and now she writes a book. The whole thing is timed.”
And AGAIN: “Mackenzie is jealous of her siblings, who have accomplished a lot and did not become drug addicts.”
Um. I guess Michelle hasn't met someone who goes by the name of Bijou Phillips?
Michelle's daughter and Mackenzie's half-sister, Chynna Phillips, told UsWeekly that she found out about it in 1997. Mackenzie called her and dropped that shit right on her head. Chynna said, "I knew it was true. I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn't true?"
I'm going to side with Chynna on this one, because she was in Wilson Phillips and I once won 4th place in a talent show for dancing around to "You Won't See Me Cry" (true story, unfortunately). I owe her one.

I think it's disgusting that someone that sick and fucked up can even get on national tv to talk about something that sick and fucked up on day time television let alone television at all. I mean for Christ sakes there's children watching. And I just think it's dispicable. She's going on about how she never had a mental illness but instead had a drug addiction. Well 99 percent of drug addicts have a mental illness. This woman. Or rather poor exuse knows nothing and millions of opera lemmings sit and absorb all the bullshit she spews. Oh, Lord. I think that means Mackenzie Phillips' book will be #1 on the NYT Bestseller List... Anyway, I did see the Oprah with her on it (there was just so much hoopla, I couldn't resist) and that's where she said she was with her child's father. I'm sure people assumed it was one of her husbands. She claims she was raped by her father (the first time she REMEMBERS) just prior to her first wedding as her father came over to dissuade her from the marriage. By the time she ended the affair (10 yrs later), she was with someone different altogether and that was the father of her child.
And kudos to you for drawing a line between the worthwhile gossip and not. I wanna work where you do if this isn't scandalous enough for you! LOL. Then again, I'm a Grade A chismosa and this has (to quote MK) Escandalo! written all over it.

OK, I think I got it: MP and Michael Barakan had a kid (Shane) in 1987, before they were married. They were married from 1997-2000. (IMDb) Wonder if they all went to Dodgers' games together?

So at the time Mackenzie Phillips became pregnant with possibly her father's child, she claims to have also been with the father of her child -- not a spouse -- so that doesn't necessarily mean her timeline is off.
Michelle Phillips, at the time of the alleged affair, was long divorced from John Phillips so her contact with Mackenzie didn't have to be great though as mother to Mackenzie's sister Chynna, it does seem they maintained some sort of relationship. Also, she was a mother figure (however successfully or unsuccessfully) to Mackenzie from the very formative ages of 3 to 10 -- before, incidentally, Mackenzie claims John even taught her to roll her first joint. So she would probably have no firsthand knowledge of this situation. However she did know John and she does know Mackenzie and though she may not be a wonderful judge of character, she is certainly more qualified to call BS (or truth) to this story than anyone on this board by virtue of the fact that she actually knew the parties involved. Initially, it confused me that someone who hated John so much would come to his defense but now I see it as maybe more what she believes about Mackenzie's character. Not to say Mackenzie is necessarily lying or a "bad" person but Michelle is right -- the girl's been a junkie for most of her life and I'm sure her family (and extended family) have had much experience with her outrageous behavior. That must taint Michelle's understanding of this story, which COULD be true. Funny, I just remembered something that happened to me -- several years back, I received a phone call from a long lost friend who'd gotten into drugs and was then in a 12-step program. She was calling to apologize... for giving me a STD (that I do not have and never had the occasion to obtain from her). I laughed nervously but when I pointed out that never happened, I was met with dead silence. By the end of the phone call, I was like -- that's fine, I forgive you for whatever did or didn't happen. Whatever she needed to move on, I figured. If she wanted to apologize, let her. I still don't know if that was right. So I'm not saying Mackenzie is lying, or Michelle is in denial, but I understand how time and drugs make everything muddy. And Mackenzie was already on drugs before the alleged abuse/rape -- though it increased after she claims they slept together. So go figure. I doubt we'll ever KNOW anything regarding this but I am interested to hear what Chynna has to say.

Was she still living at home, was she living on her own, or with her fiance while they planned their wedding? She married her first husband at the age of 20. Why does the her age keep changing?

I do think that it's bad judgment on Oprah's part, although I remember one time Oprah saying that she was sexually abused in her youth, guess she felt she could relate like she always does.
I do think it's a cunt move on Michelle to instantly deny Mackenzie's claim. I could be wrong, but how much was Michelle in her life to begin with? I'm sure a lot of people would say they were "just kidding" after dropping a bombshell like that, it's a scary thing to admit I'd imagine. There's no doubt that Mackenzie has problems, as far as drug problems that's probably both John & Mackenzie's fault. To have sex with your dad though, I'm sure that would make someone problematic pretty easily.
Although knowing how some addicts are, there's always a chance that they need to make a buck, but in this case that would be really going out of her way..The whole thing just maker Michelle look like the evil step mom, and she wasn't so perfect herself..

But what nails it for me is the fact that Chynna believes her sister. If anyone would usually be sceptical of Mackenzie's claims it should one of his other daughters who didnt have a sexual relationship with him. The fact that Chynna doesnt even hestitate to say its probably true says a lot, especially about what kind of man John Phillips was!
Yeah, cause Michelle Phillips is the best judge of character ever. I agree with those who think it's true and that it's a cash grab. It's also a last chance cry for help that will probably not work. I would be interested to see what Bijou has to say and what Chyna has to say in detail. Ex-wives opinions in these matters are hardly ever reliable.

Not sure about the whole Mackenzie story, I feel very sorry for her if its true, but I agree with you soooo much on Oprah being the worst interviewer ever. She interrupts her guests all the time and acts like she knows what they are going to say before they even said it

of course she is a sick woman: look what she's gone through! even if she had not been an addict prior to the sexual abuse (and even though it became consensual it was STILL abuse-- psychological if not physical), such a traumatic event would make even the healthiest of individuals vulnerable to all kinds of self-destructive behavior. i work with psychiatric patients, and even deeply disturbed people don't tend to lie about sexual abuse-- particularly something like incest. i pity her for what she has suffered and all the venom she now has to endure from people claiming that this is a publicity stunt. ugh.
