Harry Connick Jr. Speaks Out About Blackface Skit On Australian TV

The Australian show Hey Hey It's Saturday (even though it's Wednesday) welcomed Harry Connick Jr. on their live reunion show where he performed and guest judged the talent competition called Red Faces. Well, Red Faces was full of painted on black faces when a group called the "Jackson Jive" came out . And my face turned absolutely dead white. THE FUCK IS THIS?!

They had been on the show 20 years ago, and apparently were really popular, so they came back for more fuckery. The audience seemed to enjoy their asses and even brought the boos when the group was gonged. However, Harry wasn't amused. Not only did he give him them a giant ZERO, but when he got backstage, he threatened to quit that bitch. The producers and the host told Harry that they would let him say a few words about his feeling towards that shit.

Harry said, "I just wanted to say on behalf of my country, I know it was done humorously, but we’ve spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons, that when we see something like that, we take it really to heart. I know it was in good fun, and the last thing I want to do is take this show to a down level—because you know how much I love this show and this country—but I feel like I’m at home here, and if I knew that was going to be part of the show, I probably—I definitely wouldn’t have done it.”

The dudes who took part in the skit still don't think it was that offensive. They said they did it as a tribute to Michael Jackson (insert THIS FACE here). One of the dudes said, "I suspect things are probably a bit different in America in terms of what that (black face) mean. I understand the history of the black face but certainly it was not construed in that way at all. All six of us discussed this at length whether or not we should put this on because we realised it may be controversial. We did go to the trouble of checking with the production staff and they seemed to ok it. Two of us come from India and one of us comes from Lebanon so we can't afford to be racist to be honest. If we did offend him (Connick) we truly didn't meant to."

I think the "Jackson Jive" needs to spend their Thursday night watching that episode of Gimme A Break! where Joey Lawrence performs in blackface at Nell's church and learns a life lesson from it. They can do that while I go and vacuum the fish tank.

Keep your judgements to yourself 'cause no one cares what you think. We are aussie we will do what we want in OUR country.

To all americans whingeing about blackface & harry connick jr. Shut the fuck up, mind your own business. Contrary to what your country seems to think you do not govern the rest of the world, & no one gives a shit what you think. We don't parade over ALL the dumb shit your country does, so why don't you worry about yourselves, & if you don't like us & what happens here don't watch it & don't come here, please don't come here. Keep your judgements to yourself 'cause no one cares what you think. We are aussie we will do what we want in OUR country.

I am so over reading about this incident. It is no longer about the skit at all but a war of words between the US, UK and Australia.
@ MichelleMable - you said the following - The disgusting treatment of aborigines and Australian's total denial of history speaks volumes about Australia's attitude towards race. There's an engrained hatred and fear of minorities, especially Aborigine, African and Asian.....

We dont deny what happened here on our land but all you people need to realise Australia is a baby compared to you ... The USA was founded by Europeans - 1492 --- UK - Only God knows that one - millions of years old ... and Australia - founded in 1788 - so in just over 200 years Australia has achieved so much more then the US. We have apologised to the Aborigines for taking their land etc... Have you apologised to the Native Americans for taking their land and have you apologised to the African Americans for stealing them from the hands of their motherland? Hmmm big NO to those.

so please dont say that All Australians are racist because in 221 we have done a lot more for our country then you will ever do for the US of A...

I love how this is called the blackface skit when the Sri Lankan had his face painted white, if anything I would have thought that this would be offensive to Michael Jackson fans.

there are several ways to look at the minstral show because there were black performers that put on black face for black audiences as well as white performers. Today when we have a rapper like 50 put on chains gold teeth do his videos with women and booze is that not a minstral show performed by a black performer for black and white audiences?

@ emmy.... if you've lived there your whole life you wouldn't notice the behavior.
And P.S. everybody defending black face, seriously, you're fucking defending black face and then trying to say that Australia isn't a racist country? If you are able to define irony, please do so.
------------------------------------------------

I find this very stupid...if anything I would notice racist behaviour more than a person who spent a couple months holidaying here. Actually I'll give you an example of racism that occured to my partner only a few weeks ago: whilst visit his friend in a suburb with a heavy population of Sudanese migrants he was called a "white cunt". Another experience I had was when a previous manager (who was of European decent) told me she did not like hiring Indians. Lets get this straight I am not saying there are no racists in Australia but you people are acting as if the majority are, and that the ones who are, are white when infact they are of all colours and backgrounds. SO PLEASE do not try a act like you know more about my country than I do.

I think you people lack alot of knowledge on how diversified the Australian community is, regardless of when the white policy ended. Nationalities that reside here incude sudanese, afgans, lebanese, turkish, greeks, indians, sri lankas, chinese, filipino's and the list goes on. Being of greek backround I am quite sure that my famly would not have achieved so well in this country if the "country was racist". Also if the country was racist the government wouldn't be provided indigenous Australians with numerous benefits including subsidised tertiary education free health care and in some instances preferance for a job or university placement. In no way does this country's policies opress people of different races, which is the true meaning of racism. Does this country have racists? Ofcorse...hand me a country that doesn't.

Also its not actually the case of us defending black faces and saying they are not racist, but rather that black faces do not have the same history that they do in America or the UK. To perform the act infront of an American judge was ignorant, to perform the act in America would be racist.

I would also like to add that harry was on a popular radio station a few days before this occured and he proceeded to imitate in a MOCKING tone a hispanic women. Shouldn't this be offensive to Americans given the large hispanic population? Or is it ok to mock hispanic people? Or is it only ok to mock hispanic people when you are in Australia? I AM SO CONFUSED BY THE HIPOCRICY OF THIS MATTER!!!

I,m an Aussie but born in scotland , why l didnt find the skit funny l didnt find it offensive either. l think you need to understand what the red faces segement is all about getting on tv make a fool of yourself and they throw you some cash.

All funny or none funny?.
In a poll in Aus 80% of people found it amusing.
How is it ok for Robert Downey Junior to piss-take a black guy who is a white Aussie in disguise for Tropic Thunder? but this is over stepping the line? Or even Peter Sellers for painting up as an Indian for the movie the Party...has that much changed really?
If it were the first and only joke ever about Jacksons skin then i wouldn't be surprised.
Woopie Goldberg should have mentioned that Ted Danson did the same thing at the friars club for her roast a few years back.
I am glad i am in Australia at least we still have a sense of humor ...kinda why i love D-Listed its self depricating, intelligent, politically incorrect, and funny as hell. The world would be a shitty place without having something to laugh at and you can't make a joke anymore without offending someone.

Hey, I'm a black American living in Australia for almost 5 years now, with Australian relatives, friends and colleagues. And yes, I am offended by this, as I think any American would be, and I'd hope most people should be.

But in the end, black face simply does NOT hold the same racist connotations for Australians that it does for Americans, or even the British. I think it's offensive and inappropriate, but racist? I guarantee the Indian and Lebanese performers in the skit (both of which are much lower on the totem pole in terms of the racial order here in Australia than black Americans are) weren't seeing it that way.

To say that Australians should be as offended by black face as much as Americans are would be to say that Americans should be as offended by women driving as Saudi Arabians are.

I realize many of my fellow Americans seem to think that the entire world should conform to our cultural and societal norms, but in reality the most you can hope is that others respect them. In this case that wasn't respected, and we should be appalled by poor judgment. But this was not done with racist intent - Australians don't view it the same way we would see a minstrel act. All I hope is that it never happens again, but let's not make this out to be something it's not.

I hate it, I'm upset by it, and anybody who tells me to calm down can kiss my black ass.

When did all of this degenerate into Australia versus America versus the UK?

Australia: You're worse....
USA: No, you are.
UK: No, you are
Australia: No, you are
UK: No, you are
USA: No, you are

How freaking childish!

It wouldn't matter what country this skit took place in, it was wrong and offensive.

It doesn't matter what nationality the celebrity guest was, the skit was wrong and offensive.

It doesn't matter what nationality the performers were, the skit was wrong and offensive.

Black face/minstrel acts of any kind are wrong and offensive, end of story.

Racism is wrong and offensive any time, any place and anywhere.

I'm Australian and I'm shocked that whoever chose the acts for this segment allowed this performance on at all. It should have ended at auditions and not have been allowed to go any further.

Raniya's picture

Well what about that movie "White Chicks"? was that suppose to be racist too??

I just don't get certain things in the US ..people are always playing the race card, even when one has to fill out a form..

"Canta y Encanta a tu Pueblo Tigresa"

zanderzander, Australians grew up with many of the same cultural references as the rest of us, golliwogs for example, were just as popular in Australia as they were in the UK. The difference between Australia and the UK is that Australia had a policy of not accepting non-white immigrants into their country until the late 70s, hence the lack of diversity. The UK, on the other hand, has a much more diverse society and therefore, we realise that this sort of shit isn't funny.

I hate to be the one to break it to some of you, but you do realize that Australia is a different country from America? With different history and cultural references?

If you care so much about something that happens in one country offending another, then why aren't you protesting any form of art or entertainment where women are shimmying around in short skirts or bikinis? You do realize that offends hundreds of millions of people around the world, right? And that's just one example, but there are obviously many, many more.

As a black man living in Australia, I assure you I was blown away by that skit and to this minute still wonder how ignorant the producers could have been to not realize this would be offensive to their American judge and any others who saw this with a similar frame of reference. However from talking to my Aussie colleagues, the blank looks on their faces make it clear that to them, black face is on the same level as pretending to be a moronic and offensive reporter from Kazakhstan which is funny for exactly the same reasons.

It was clearly not meant to be racist or degrading in any way, and we will have to chalk this one up to cultural ignorance and/or insensitivity, as often happens in cross-border misunderstandings.

Now, as a few others have said here...can everyone just calm down?

"@ TV Zombie, POM does not come from rhyming slang for "immigrant". As far as I am aware it is used to refer to Brits like me, and it originates in the phrase "Prisoner Of her Majesty", which used to be emblazoned on the backs of the convicts who were first shipped to Australia."

The most widely accepted theory is that it comes from the word pomegranate:

"That origin was described by D H Lawrence in his Kangaroo of 1923: “Pommy is supposed to be short for pomegranate. Pomegranate, pronounced invariably pommygranate, is a near enough rhyme to immigrant, in a naturally rhyming country. Furthermore, immigrants are known in their first months, before their blood ‘thins down’, by their round and ruddy cheeks. So we are told”."

The Oxford English Dictionary also says that this is the origin of the term, as does The Anzac Book of 1916.

Fred Flintstone's picture

Shit people take a deep breath! It was done as a joke as Harry said and just because the Aussie's sense of humor may not be the same as yours, does not make them inherently racist nor does it make them evil. In fact compared to Wanda Sykes jokes about GWB's kidney's falling out or Chris Rocks (and other black comedians) repetoire of jokes about "whitey" or "niggas",I thought this was pretty tame. Hey I am confident enough in myself that I frankly don't give a shit if you call me a fucking Indian to my face. In fact I am likely to come back at you with some "dago", "hun" or "mic" zingers!

By the by I thought Harry's comment at the end were spot on, literate and frankly quite well spoken (for a fucking hillbilly!).

Sorry, i just can't help getting sucked back into this thread all over again. First of all,
@MichelleMable --- how do you even have the bare-faced cheek to talk about Australia's treatment of Aborigines, i.e. the indigenous population of Australia? Ever heard of a little thing called Native Americans? You know, you slaughtered most of them and forced them to live on reservations on your way over to the west coast? The fact you've lived in Australia for two years means nothing, as its very easy for people (particularly Americans) to spend time in a country and STILL conserve prejudiced misconceptions concerning that country, I've seen it done - a lot of Americans are so sure that the image of a country they have been given by Hollywood movies is the right one that they ignore the truth even when they're living in it.
Secondly, @ TV Zombie, POM does not come from rhyming slang for "immigrant". As far as I am aware it is used to refer to Brits like me, and it originates in the phrase "Prisoner Of her Majesty", which used to be emblazoned on the backs of the convicts who were first shipped to Australia.

Oh that's good, show how sophisticated your society is by using a racial slur. Did you know what 'pom' originates from Australian rhyming slang for 'immigrant'? It's good to know racial slurs are alive and well in Australia.

The US navy was not practicing segregation in the 80s, military desegregation happened under Truman. You're talking about one instance on one ship, which by the way, doesn't appear to be backed up by any source.

Bus segregation ended in 1956. The White Australia Policy wasn't formally ended until 1973!! For anyone who doesn't know what the White Australia Policy was, google it. And Australia was still selecting immigrants based on nationality (therefore being able to deny anyone from a non-white nation) up until 1978!

Lots of upset Australians here telling us to look at our own countries. OK, I'm looking at mine, it's not perfect - but that doesn't mean yours isn't a racist cesspit. Your country is where the rest of the civilised world was about 20 years ago, you need to catch up. The first step is to admit you have a problem. And by saying "you have a problem", I don't mean you as an individual, I mean your society. Admit it, Australian society needs to catch up with the rest of us. This sort of GOLLIWOG SHIT would not be allowed on TV in the UK or the US. It just wouldn't.

Well I am glad we don't live in the UK or US, sounds like you don't have any fun if you can't take a joke.

I will just remind you that 20 years ago segregation was still around in the US. They had "black" and "white" messes on the USS Missouri. White people were not allowed to go into black areas, and black people could not go into white areas, officers included, just like South Africa!!! They don't show that in their movies. We would never have tolerated the same thing on our ships.

You want to try to export your values to us? America is the most violent nation on earth. They export violence to every other nation through television, and God help any country if it disagrees with America, they will invade it and destroy it.

Hmm,well I had a look at the item in question
it wasn't particularly amusing, nor was it at all racist or demeaning.Harry Connick expressed his
thoughts on the whole episode with aplomb and grace.

However,I don't care for having my homeland branded as racist. We may have started as a penal colony, the issues with our indigenous people are very complex & will continue to take time to improve,we have an incredibly diverse population of many nationalities religious persuations & cultures,we do have problems, but overall I KNOW we all live & work side by side & we DO get along.WE acknowledge our shortfalls, admit when we're wrong & don't try to push our policital or cultural point of view to the rest of the world
as the ONLY way to live.

So to all of you who have indulged in a little
Aussie bashing over this issue I say this to you
TAKE A LONG HARD,DETAILED,IN DEPTH LOOK IN YOUR
OWN BACKYARD YOU'RE NOT AT BLOODLESS OR PURE AS
YOU WOULD WANT TO THINK YOU ARE.Take a little look around at ground level,be honest with your
selves...

No one is pure
No one is innocent
No one is right
No one is wrong
No one is blameless
No one is PERFECT.
And if you can't see that, you're more blinkered
and self righteous than I'd dared hope.

I have been reading these post and trying to figure how I'm going to say this and sound educated at the same time.lol.I have read alot of discontent by some of you about harry connick Jr.From from Americans and Aussies alike.I'm going to keep this short. Harry is from New Orleans and they have INDEED have suffered through some of their own racial identities and racism black face came was first preformed by a man from new Orleans... actually it was preformed by a creole (if you know that history) black face was a double slam to black people.Black face has been a very hard thing to get past..just like racism because every once and awhile people dig it up and try to use it for entertainment purposes. Its not! and never was.It was to belittle black people and just like racism it worked it even had other black people using it...I applaud Harry C. for being from the south and saying that it was wrong.I also applaud him as a person for stating that its unacceptable.I read someone use the word we need to show our kids TOLERENCE..I HATE that word..you shouldn't have to teach them anything when it comes to race, culture or sexuality.I don't want someone to tolerate me.... i rather they LOVE my differences and look past them.I teach my kids that everyone comes in different sizes and colors and its not our place to say what is right or wrong instead you love them for who they are as a person and what they stand for.

P.S the only time i have seen Harry C. in black face was during Mardi gras and he was apart of the Zulu krewe parade for an hour or two.. but that is some history that is better googled..lol
********** cant wait.mmmmm hmmmmmm***********

It is amazing how many people from all over the world have become all high and mighty, made disgusting slurs against ALL Australians without ever having set foot in the country.
It is amazing how many countries upon viewing that stupid skit (which was quite obviously not done with malicious intent) have forgotten their foul backgrounds with regard to race.
And that person that said that people stopped and stared in amazement at a black person, bull sh*t. Australia is no different to most developed countries in regards to race - WE ALL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH IT - and it is pretty pathetic that people worldwide have become just as bad as racists in making massive assumptions about Australians.
As another poster already stated, most of us DONT CARE, just don't be an arsehole and we'll get along fine. Down here we have most problems based on peoples attitudes and behaviour, not the colour of their skin.
And on a side note, it can't be that awful a place to live, isn't it rated 2nd worldwide by the UN as a desirable country in which to live?

@ emmy.... if you've lived there your whole life you wouldn't notice the behavior.
And P.S. everybody defending black face, seriously, you're fucking defending black face and then trying to say that Australia isn't a racist country? If you are able to define irony, please do so.

First of all you can't compare being Indian, Lebanese or, uh Greek (I'm pretty amazed that someone even attempted this comparison) to being black. Secondly, I lived in Australia for 2 years (I'm American) while studying and I can say that it is a heinously racist country. The disgusting treatment of aborigines and Australian's total denial of history speaks volumes about Australia's attitude towards race. There's an engrained hatred and fear of minorities, especially Aborigine, African and Asian, although any immigrants generally fall in the line of fire if they aren't of Anglo Saxon background. I always thought America was a country of racists, but I've realized that aside from obvious nutjobs we're a pretty tolerant country. Any Australian trying to defend this fuckery must be huffing some keyboard duster, although I know jingoism is an especially Aussie quality.

Not really funny and probably scored and commented on correctly. I have met many aussies and they are generally very accepting of a person's race and culture. This tv show clearly made an error in judgement.

In the same way that America is a nation of loud-mouthed, bigoted, white-sheet wearing, sex-crazed, surgery-enhanced, uneducated, gun-totin', gas-guzzling, ignorant rednecks, starlets, criminals and rappers, judging by the high-budget bad taste television they have exported to the rest of us.

I'm off to watch a few 30sec you-tube videos and SNL skits from the US, to get a good idea of what Americans are really like! I didn't realise they would give me such a good overview of the American people and culture!
