Actually I read it's Isla who's holding up the conversion. She apparently didn't start her classes or something to that effect. She kept putting them off.

If you're going to marry a guy who's is so religious that he would want his wife to convert, I don't know why most of you would be surprised if he asked that his wife convert before marriage. Don't marry a religious man then or one that isn't religious but holds his faith in high regard.

I've heard of men converting to Catholicism (and sometimes Judaism) but most of the time it's women who convert (and usually to Judaism). Says a lot about the religions I guess.

Oh I realise this, as half of my family are Polish and I'm fairly sure someone in my paternal great-grandmother's family either married into Catholicism or converted of their own volition due to various political and historical reasons. You only have to look at my great-grandma's picture to see it but no one in the last 100 years has practised anything but Catholicism.

That said, I've much love for the Jews as let's be fair, how can you not?

Thank you, yes it was. I went through a few years where I hated Jews but my best friend (who has a Jewish dad) assured me that that family was every bad Jewish stereotype rolled into one and I realized it was really just that family that is despicable.

Depending on which Reform or Conservative temple your daughter picks, she would "probably" be considered a Jew. In the US.

(even then, I've seen a few Reform Rabbis pull out
"you are not Jewish enough card.)

Outside of the United States, most Jews consider themselves Orthodox, and hence your daughter wouldn't be considered a Jew without going thru an Orthodox conversion.

The State of Israel has recently upped the ante on "who is conserved a Jew" conversion-wise. There are very few loop holes to fast track aliyah.

I wouldn't hold my breath about it being changed anytime soon. If ever.

This coming from someone went thru the 2 conversion process. Reform the first go around. Orthodox the second so I could make aliyah if I choose to with minimal grief.

As I pointed out earlier, this isn't always the case, and should your daughter want to be considered Jewish, she would be accepted as a Jew, without the need to convert, by most Reform and Liberal congregations. She would also be considered a Jew by Israel, who take the definition of Jewish from the Nazis, who said that anyone with one Jewish grandparent is a Jew.

The whole thing with the mother having to be a Jew in order for the child to be a Jew is ridiculous to me. My daughter's dad is Jewish. He was an asshole and made us do a DNA test, which of course, proved he was her father. But she's not officially a Jew because I'm not. So when that law was written, it was because the only way to make sure the child was a Jew was to see it come out of the mother's Jewish body. They need to revise it. And, no, his mother doesn't accept her -- she's "not a Jew!"

You know many of us could have Jewish connections and not even know it. I researched both my great grandparents on my mom's side. They came from Sicily. Anyways both last-names have Jewish roots. Sicily was a stop off point and port for many Jews and slaves. Many of them converted to catholicism to avoid trouble.

Anyways the world is a giant melting pot.

Ivanka did not have an Orthodox conversion, at least one that would let her and her children make aliyah to Israel.

My friend (Reform convert) daughter is going thru this horseshit right now. The mom is not considered a Jew by State of Israel, and the daughter is going thru conversion again so she and her husband to be (orthodox) can move to Israel.

It is a 2-3 year process, and you must live in your Orthodox community another 1 year before the conversion is considered valid by the State of Israel.

I get pissed with Rabbis do not bring up this shit when the couple wants to get married. I'm assuming it is because of turf battles and money.

I seriously doubt Ivanka is going to follow the Taharat haMishpacha laws (family purity laws) and go to the Mikveh once a month.

If the Mikveh was use during the conversion, I wonder if it exploded on fire like Lake Erie in the 70s when Ivanka dipped her toe in it.

Maybe her hubby family is Orthodox, but I can her his great great grandma screaming from the grave, "Jardlele, why did you go marry a shikse?"

Oh, and not all Orthodox women shave their heads and wear wigs/hats. My friend does not. That is a minhag (community standard), and not a universal rule.

Jolly, there's no such thing as "Jewish blood". A convert to Judaism is just as much a real Jew as any other Jew. In most Jewish sects, the children are Jewish if the mother is Jewish, hence your boyfriend wanting you to convert. In Reform or Liberal Judaism, it only matters if one of your parents is Jewish, so your children would have been considered Jews within either of these Jewish sects even without you converting.

This is no good. They are the same age. That means she will be in the first wives club in a few short years. If you marry for money go older.
Unless she pops out 2 kids.

I hear that in Nigerian culture the wedding is held in the house of worship of the woman. Not quite the same as expecting a man to convert but it does put a woman's religious choice first, for the wedding at least.

The Greek Orthodox are similar in that they seem to think that their customs and traditions are more important than the other person's. My cousin married a Greek Orthodox guy and although she didn't convert, both of her children are being raised Greek Orthodox. They do the whole Greek school thing and only attend the Greek services.

As suspected, there are stories online from Oct 08 saying that she was in the midst of a conversion back then. That's a year ago. Fast-tracked conversion my arse. Also, she converted Modern Orthodox, it's not as strict as old school Orthodox, but she would not have been able to convert without studying for at least a year.

I think it stems from peoples religions bashing other religions. I know that Christianity denounces Judaism and vice versa.

I was never raised with any religion, so I have a "blank slate" or open mind to all religions.

If you were born catholic - why would you learn about hinduism? or some other religion? It would certainly make for more acceptance in the world, but I do understand why it is that way.
