I'd like to say something to ALL of the many people here who are saying that Polanski was charged with unlawful sexual intercourse. That's not at all accurate. He was CHARGED with multiple, multiple offenses against that little girl Unlawful Sexual Intercourse is the one charge of all of them that he PLEAD GUILTY to. He took a plea bargain, didn't like his odds at being able to walk free immediately, and instead ran away. Shit, he'd certainly have been out in very short order if he'd just done his time.

To say that he was charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor is to really minimize the real charges against him. Charges that he could not possibly have been acquitted of, since he admitted to basically all of them. He admitted that he had all manner of sex with that 13 year old child and he admitted that he knew her age. Done and done. That unlawful sexual intercourse charge was a GIFT. And he was too blind to see it for exactly that. Either that or he received horrible advice.

One more thing: I am driven crazy by the term "cried rape," as one poster put it. That phrase comes directly from the story of the "Boy who Cried Wolf." That boy was lying. Every time someone says "she cried rape," they are basically calling that person a liar. It's become a fairly common term, but it's really offensive to me. Maybe to a lot of other people as well. I think if people knew where it came from they wouldn't use it so casually, so I'm posting the origin here.
